The purpose of this study was (1) to examine the impact of chronic diseases on adolescent's peer relationships, and (2) to investigate the mediating effect of self-perceived health status and resilience on the relationship between their physical health states and peer relationships. The authors used the first-wave panel data from 'the Korean Children-Youth Panel Survey'. The sample included 2,351 first-grade of middle school students(boys 50.1%, girls 49.9%). Among the subjects examined 48.11% had chronic diseases. Using maximum likelihood estimation with Amos18(Arbuckle, 2009), SEM software, structural equation modeling was tested. The major findings were as follows : 1. Adolescents' chronic diseases had a negative impact on peer relationships. 2. Self-perceived health status and resilience had a mediating effect. This suggests that self-perceived health status and resilience could be protective factors when it comes to perceive peer relationships more positively for adolescents with chronic diseases. 3. Resilience was directly affected by self-perceived health status. This indicates that positive self-perception about their health status encourages adolescents with chronic diseases to be more resilient and to more positively affect their perception of their relationships with peers.
This study examined the various pathways from peer relationships to subjective well-being through self-esteem in late childhood. A total of 354 fifth and sixth grade students in elementary school (189 boys and 165 girls) participated in the study. Peer relationships were assessed using the peer rating scale, and self-esteem and subjective well-being were measured using the self-rating scales. The data were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Children's peer relationships affected their subjective well-being directly, as well as indirectly through their self-esteem. Positive relations with peers enabled children to improve their subjective well-being. In addition, those children who possessed good relationships with peers were more likely to perceive themselves as worthy, which led to higher overall levels of happiness and satisfaction in their lives. The study emphasizes the crucial influence of self-esteem on school-aged children's subjective well-being.
This study examined the effects of young children's effortful control and emotional regulation, teacher-child conflictual relationships on young children's overt and relational aggression. The subjects of this study were 372, 3-5 years old children and their teachers. Young children's aggression, effortful control, emotional regulation, and teacher-child relationships were assessed by a teacher's report. The collected data were analyzed by t -test, Pearson correlations, and pathway analysis. The results were as follows: first, the boys' overt aggression was found to be greater than that of the girls,' while, there was no difference in relational aggression between boys and girls. Second, the boys' and girls' effortful control was found to affect the young children's overt and relational aggression indirectly through emotional regulation, and teacher-child conflictual relationships. For the girls, effortful control was found to affect overt aggression directly. Third, teacher-child conflictual relationships and emotional regulation were found to affect boys' and girls' overt and relational aggression directly and to mediate between boys' and girls' effortful control and overt and relational aggression. Further, for girls, emotional regulation was found to mediate between teacher-child conflictual relationships and overt and relational aggression. Additionally, effortful control was found to be the most important variable predicting boys' and girls' overt aggression, while a teacher-child conflictual relationship was the most important variable for boys' and girls' relational aggression.
Purpose: The concept of respect is rooted in the core value of human relations, and interpersonal relationships with others. The notion of respect in these relationships is entrenched in the broader context of the processes of relationships between professionals and clients in general, along with the philosophical and ethical foundations of respect. Although nursing principles and values, such as autonomy and dignity have built their foundation of care on the concept of respect, these concepts (ie. autonomy and dignity) are still different from respect. Respect within health professional-client relationships, indicates that respect is a fundamental concept within nursing, permeating a number of other concepts that provide purposeful nursing care within the process of nurse-client relationships and respect has been discussed as an ethical and moral concept of care that addresses the values of human dignity in the nursing discipline, however research examining the client s perspectives of respect as an ethical principle of care, especially within Canada s diverse population is non-existent. There is limited research from the client s perspective addressing challenges communicating the concept of respect in relationships between health professionals and clients, specifically research directed at immigrant or the vulnerable population.
The study aims to investigate the children's adaptability to early school circumstances and their relationships to teachers and to peers. The examination was done on 110 children aged 4 or 5 at a kindergarten and two child care centers in Seoul. Their 'adaptability to early school' and their 'relationships to teachers and to peers' were rated by their teachers. On the whole, the children subjects are on good terms with their teachers and peers, and they adapt well to early schools. But according to age groups, there were significant differences in the teacher-to-child relationships. Compared to boys, girls show more' adaptability to the early schools', more 'closeness to teachers' and more 'prosociality in peer group'. The 'closeness to teachers' has a positive relation to the 'sociability', 'prosocial behaviors' and 'leadership of peer group', but the 'conflict with teachers' has a negative relation to the peer group relationships. And the' children's relationships with teachers and with peers' were significantly related to their early school adaptability. The 'prosociality', the 'closeness' and the' dependency' were significantly related to the' adaptability to early school' in order.
We investigated the structure-activity relationships on use of multi-layer neural networks. The relationships are techniques required in developments of medicines. Since many kinds of observations might be adopted on the techniques, we discussed some points between the observations and the properties of multi-layer neural networks. In the structure-activity relationships, an important property is not that standard deviations are nearly equal to zero for observed physiological activity, but prediction ability for unknown medicines. Since we adopted non-linear approximation, the function to represent the activity can be defined by observations; therefore, we believe that the standard deviations have not significance. The function was examined by "leave-one-out" method, which was originally introduced for the multi-regression analysis. In the linear approximation, the examination is significance, however, we believe that the method is inappropriate in case of nonlinear fitting as neural networks; therefore, we derived a new index fer the relationships from the differential of information propagation in the neural network. By using the index, we discussed physiological activity of an anti-cancer medicine, Mitomycine derivatives. The neuro-computing suggests that there is no direction to extend the anti-cancer activity of Mitomycine, which is close to the trend of anticancer developing.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between each type of attitudes toward money and the attributes of choosing family restaurants. A self-administrated questionnaire was completed by 387 students, and data were analysed by frequency, factor, reliability and canonical correlation. Seven factors were obtained from factor analysis of attitudes toward money; Factor 1 "power", Factor 2 "obsession", Factor 3 "retention", Factor 4 "achievement", Factor 5 "anxiety", Factor 6 "distrust", and Factor7 "evaluation". The attributes of family restaurant choice were extracted into six factors: Factor 1 "quality of food", Factor 2 "restaurant event", Factor 3 "interior environment", Factor 4 "value of food", Factor 5 "convenience for approach", and Factor 6 "employees' service". Canonical correlation analysis showed three significant functions. Canonical function 1 showed that the attitudes of considering the power of money, its retention and achievement were indicated to have significantly positive relationships with the quality of food in the attributes of choosing family restaurants. Canonical function 2 showed that significantly negative relationships between distrust and restaurant events and convenience for approach. Canonical function 3 also showed that significantly positive relationships between obsession and anxiety and the interior of restaurants and employees' service, and significantly negative relationships between evaluation and the interior of restaurants and employees' service.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of householder's job status m the family life style. Data was collected from 475 parents in Chonbuk province by using a self administered questionnaire from June 10 to 30, 1998. Frequencies, percentages, and averages were calculated T-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were followed. The results were as follows; 1. The families who suffered householders' job loss were 1/4 of the respondents and over 4/5 of the families felt economic stresses. 1/3 of the respondents had debts and 1/5 had not any savings. Most of the families were in good or normal marriage relationships, experienced economic crises, and had sparing habit. 2. In out-of-job families, couple cohension, couple satisfaction, and total marriage relationships were lower than in-job families. Also, out-of-job families spared more in buying and using clothes and foods, total clothes living and total food living. 3. In out-of-job families, the economic pressures on marriage relationships, clothes living, and food living were stronger than in-job families. 4. Family resources such as savings, ordinary marriage relationships, and sparing habit effected on the marriage relationships, clothes living, and food living in out-of-job families and in-job families. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of children's self-regulation and teacher-child relationships on children's social behaviors. Participants were 239 4- to 5-year-old children(114 boys, 125 girls) and their 23 teachers. The teachers completed rating scales to measure children's social behaviors and teacher-child relationships. Children's self-regulation was assessed by a mother reported questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The major results of this study were as follows: First, Children's social behaviors were partially correlated with children's self-regulation and teacher-child relationships. Second, The most influential factor by children's social behaviors was teacher-child relationship. Specially, teacher-child intimacy was the most powerful factor predicting children's asocial behavior and prosocial behavior. While teacher-child conflict was the most powerful factor influencing children's aggressive behavior, hyperactive-distractible behavior and anxious-fearful behavior. Findings are discussed in terms of the importance of teacher-child relationships in the context of program development and guidance for maladjusted children.
This study examined the influences of both peer and parent-child relationships on suicidal ideation in adolescents with a focus on interpersonal relationships in adolescence that can act as risks as well as protective factors for youth suicide. This study analyzed 5,440 middle and high school students drawn from data, the seventh Happy Planet Index of children-adolescent in Korea, and conducted a series of logistic regressions. The results are as follows. First, both direct and indirect involvement in the school violence affects suicidal ideation as a risk factor in peer relationships. However, the quality and quantity of close friends of adolescents do not represent a protective role against suicidal ideation insofar as they are exposed to school violence. Second, adolescents who live apart from one of their parents are vulnerable to suicidal ideation than those who live with two parents. Third, very poor parent-child relationships in adolescence are not necessarily associated with suicidal ideation in adolescents. Fourth, shared time or activities between parents and adolescents in terms of family meal times are more likely to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents than the emotional characteristics (trustworthiness or a close relationship) of parents and adolescents. The findings provide implications that frequent contact and shared activities in terms of family dining may contribute to the prevention of adolescent suicide.
