The Effect of Emotional Labor for Job Stress in Bus Drivers (버스 운전직 근로자들의 감정노동이 직무 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the association between emotional labor and job stress in bus drivers, as well as to propose management strategies for job stress. Methods: The study was conducted in February 2013 and involved 182 bus drivers working in the Gyeonggi area. Results: emotional labor was $9.5{\pm}2.34$ on average, and job stress was higher than the median of the same indicator among Korea's workers in the areas of physical environment, job autonomy, and relationship conflicts. Factors that affected job stress was lower if the subjects' Higher values for emotional labor indicated a higher level of job stress. Conclusion: To reduce among drivers, the following measures are necessary: increase the comfort of the driver's seat within the vehicle, provide adequate rest between bus headways, provide comfortable in-house rest facilities, and establish physical training spaces to reduce musculoskeletal disorders as well as programs for reducing back pain. In addition, relationship conflicts may be relieved by increasing job autonomy as much as possible, by granting autonomous control of working hours and bus headways, as well as by banning long work hours. Moreover, various club activities, exercise programs, and counseling programs that workers can be involved in together may be beneficial. This study is significant in that it identified the relationship of the bus drivers' emotional labor and job stress, which has previously been ignored as a research topic. Through its results, this study provides baseline data for the preparation of management strategies that can address the job stress of bus drivers.

Different Concepts of Customer-Supplier Relationship - An Exploratory Case Study of Korean-German Business Activities in the Shipbuilding Industry

  • In the last several years, South Korea's shipbuilders have been dominating global shipbuilding. Thus, many global suppliers in the shipbuilding industry, especially German supply companies, are eager to get the Korean major shipbuilders as their customer. This study analyzed the different ways of business behaviours of German and Korean businessmen regarding customer-supplier relations. Furthermore, this paper aims to examine the kinds of challenges the international businessmen are confronted with and how this affects everyday business between German suppliers and Korean customers, using several case examples. Finally, backgrounds of cross-cultural problems and conflicts of German-Korean business relations are identified and explained.

The Mediating Effects of Mothers' Depression Between Marital Conflict and Preschoolers' Sleep Problems (부부갈등과 유아의 수면문제 간의 관계에서 어머니 우울의 매개효과)

  • Objective: The goals of this research were (1)to examine the relationship among parental conflict, mothers' depression and preschoolers' sleep problems, and (2) to examine the mediating effects of mothers' depression between marital conflict and preschoolers' sleep problems. Methods: The participants were 1,639 mothers with preschoolers taken from the 5th year Korean Children Panel. Date were analyzed using descriptive statistics, partial correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The results were as follows: First, preschoolers' sleep problems were positively related to marital conflicts. Second, preschoolers' sleep problems were positively related to mothers' depression. Third, marital conflict was positively related to mothers' depression. Lastly, mothers' depression fully mediated the relationship between marital conflict and preschoolers' sleep problems. That is, marital conflict had an effect on preschoolers' sleep problem, only through mothers' depression. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results, intervention programs should be developed to prevent preschoolers' sleep problems such as marital relationship improvement programs and mothers' depression improvement programs.

Effects of Conflict Management Strategy Within Supply Chain on Partnership and Performance (공급망 내 갈등관리전략이 파트너십과 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • While individual enterprises with different objectives each other within supply chains require a variety of resources to achieve their own seeking goals and performances, it is necessary to form interdependent relationships among the enterprises to secure the resources what they need, as the individual enterprises are supposed to have limitations on such as time, space and cost to secure all the resources. In this process, conflict possibilities rise and opportunistic behaviors increase due to those environmental factors such as unbalanced information among enterprises, limited rationality, pursuit of interests, and risk aversion. Those existing studies on conflicts in the field of supply chains have limitations in that they failed to present specific conflict management strategies based on the conflict types from the perspective of the conflict resolution mechanism as the studies have made only focused on investigating the causes of conflicts and the impact of conflicts on performance. In this study, therefore, it used the TKI model of Kilmann and Thomas(1977) to subdivide the conflict management strategies in the process of transactions within supply chains by enterprises, and looked into the impact on partnership and performance according to each strategy. As the results, it showed that those types of conflict management strategies such as concession type and cooperation type had a positive(+) impact on the relationship commitment as a factor of partnership, and it was identified that the relationship commitment had a positive(+) impact on performance. In other words, it can be considered that the enterprises making use of the concession type & the cooperation type conflict management strategies under the situation of conflict would be able to have a very positive impact on their performances if they can make good relationship commitment such as investments in and efforts for the sustainable relationship along with the conflict management, while recognizing the importance of relationship. The most important meaning of this study lies on in terms of that it would be contributable to strengthening the partnership between enterprises and minimizing the risk of supply chains caused by conflicts through these results from the study.

  • Many patients have been suffering the continued hypersensitivity and pain of teeth after operative or endodontic treatment. The primary purpose of this paper is to examine the causes of the pain and the hypersensitivity of teeth, and to resolve conflicts between dentists and patients. The secondary aim of this paper is to prevent medical disputes. Evidence-based dentistry and making a good relationship with patients will reduce disputes on dental treatment.

A Phenomenological Study on Conflicts Experience by Women: Focused on the Case of Women in Small and Medium Size Enterprises (중소기업 직장 여성의 갈등경험에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • This study examined the case of women's conflict experience in small and medium size enterprises. Although the number of women working in business organizations is rapidly growing in Korea, discourse about them is still scarce. Some discourse about them focuses only on the productivity and inequality aspects within the organizations. Therefore, we need to examine their organizational lives through a more dynamic and performance based perspective. Especially, because conflicts experience by women within business organizations involve a variety of organizational interactions, they reveal the vivid reality with which working women face today. The existing conflict research studies focused on communication or interpersonal relationship are limited by the fact that they have primarily dealt with the variables such as conflict management styles. However, conflict research needs a more specific and wholistic interpretation because conflicts usually depend on their contexts and interaction dynamics. Therefore, the phenomenological methodology was employed as a more appropriate method for the current conflict study. Results shows that the two themes were identified regarding the conflict content. The first and second themes were the unfair situations and the hierarchical rank respectively. The three themes were identified regarding the attitudes about conflicts. They were the passive stance toward conflicts, the recognition of the gender difference, and the acknowledgement of the importance of the relational aspect respectively. Finally, three more themes were identified regarding the conflict management styles. The first, second and third themes were the passive responding, the aggressive responding and the positive conflict management respectively. In addition, the implications of the results and the suggestions for future studies were made.

Impact of Conflict within Social Welfare Organization on Job Performance : Moderating Effect of Participatory Decision-making (사회복지조직 내 갈등이 직무성과에 미치는 영향 : 참여적 의사결정의 조절효과)

  • This study sought to find out the impact of conflicts in social welfare organizations on job performance and to find out the effects of controlling participatory decision-making in their relationships. To that end, a survey was conducted on workers at social welfare centers in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and Chungcheong Province, and 360 copies were finally used for analysis and Correlation and hierarchical regression and statistical significance analysis of the adjustment effects were performed. As a result, conflicts within the organization, job performance, and participatory decision-making showed a negative correlation, and as participatory decision-making in the relationship between conflict within the organization and job performance showed a controlled effect, the impact of conflicts within the organization on job performance was reduced. These results suggest that participatory decision-making can alleviate conflicts within an organization and at the same time increase job performance. Based on this, the following suggestions were proposed: They include conflict management strategies in the guidelines for social welfare subjects, establish guidelines for conflict management, provide training for workers, engage workers in employee evaluation and compensation system development, and operate permanent organizations such as the Conflict Handling Committee after investigating conflicts within social welfare organizations.

A Study on the Relationship between Intra-team Conflict and Team Innovative Performance and the Mediating Role of Team Learning Behaviors in R&D Teams (연구개발팀에서 팀내 갈등과 팀 혁신성과간의 관계에서 팀 학습행동의 매개역할)

  • In this era of cut-throat competition, innovation is a source of competitive advantage, and securing core competency through innovation plays a pivotal role in ensuring the survival and growth of an organization. In an organization, R&D team is a core division driving innovation, and creative tension and conflict among researchers fuels innovative performance. Despite heated debate over the positive and negative effects of conflict, insufficiently-identified process factors have left sophisticated mechanisms between conflicts and effects unaddressed. This study assumes that team learning behaviors can bean important process factor given that conflict propels learning, and that learning is a decisive factor in creating competitive advantage. This study conducted an empirical analysis of the relationship between relationship/task conflict and team innovative performance, and the mediating role of team learning behaviors using data collected from a questionnaire sent out to the heads of 262 R&D teams and second highest-ranking officials thereof. The analysis conducted based on structural equation model indicates that relationship conflict has negatively affected team learning behaviors, whereas task conflict has positively influenced team learning behaviors(full mediation effect), team learning behaviors has positively influenced team innovative performance. Based on these results, the study has suggested implications of intra-team conflict and team learning behaviors for team innovative performance.

The Effects of Psychological Separation from Parents on Conflict Solving Strategies for Dating Relationship and Relationship Satisfaction among Male and Female University Students (남녀 대학생의 부모로부터의 심리적 독립이 이성관계에서의 갈등해결전략 및 이성관계만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of university students' psychological separation from their parents on conflict solving strategies for dating relationships and on relationship satisfaction. The participants were 231 university students. The results were as follows. Firstly, male students were more psychologically separated from their mothers than female students. When living with parents, students were more psychologically separated from their fathers than their mothers. Secondly, the more independent students were from psychological conflict with their mothers, the less negative strategies they used in conflicts during dating. The closer female students were with their mothers, the more positive conflict solving strategies they used. Thirdly, the students who were freer from conflict with their mothers experienced higher satisfaction with emotional communication when dating. In conclusion, psychological separation from parents was confirmed to be a variable influencing both the effective use of the conflict solving strategies and dating relationship satisfaction.
