  • Reinforced concrete buildings with shearwalls are very efficient to resist earthquake disturbances. In general, reinforced concrete frames are governed by flexure and shearwalls are governed by shear. If a structure included both frames and shearwalls, it is generally governed by shearwalls. However, the ductility of ordinary reinforced concrete is very limited. To improve the ductility, a series of tests on framed shearwalls made of corrugated steel was performed previously and the experimental results were compared with ordinary reinforced concrete frames and shearwalls. It was found that ductility of framed shearwalls could be greatly improved if the thickness of the corrugated steel wall is appropriate to the surrounding reinforced concrete frame. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to predict the horizontal load-displacement relationship of hybrid reinforced concrete frame-steel wall systems according to the analogy of truss models. This analytical model is based on equilibrium and compatibility conditions as well as constitutive laws of corrugated steel. The analytical predictions are compared with the results of tests reported in the previous paper. It is found that proposed analytical model can predict the test results with acceptable accuracy.

  • The use of recycled aggregate concrete is increasing faster than the development of appropriate design recommendations. This paper is making advances in the recycling of waste concrete material for use as recycled aggregate to make secondary concrete product. Using recycled aggregates from demolished concrete, we manufactured concrete blocks to experiment overall performance in feasible performances. This paper reports limited experimental data on the structural performance of shear wall used concrete blocks made in recycled aggregates. Reinforced concrete frame and shear walls were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear behavior. The variable in the test program was the existence of infilled wall used concrete blocks Made in recycled aggregates. Based on the experimental results, Infilled wall has a high influence on the maximum strength and initial stiffness of reinforced concrete frame. Structural performance of specimen WSB1 and WSB2 is quite different from RCF specimen, particularly strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity.

  • A number of studies have suggested that the use of high ductile and high shear materials, such as Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) and High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC), significantly enhances the shear capacity of structural elements, even with/without shear reinforcements. The present study emphasizes the development of a nonlinear model of shear behaviour of a HPFRCC panel for application to the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete buildings. To model the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels, the original Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) for conventional reinforced concrete panels has been newly revised for reinforced HPFRCC panels, and is referred to here as the HPFRCC-MCFT model. A series of experiments was conducted to assess the shear behaviour of HPFRCC panels subjected to pure shear, and the proposed shear model has been verified through an experiment involving panel elements under pure shear. The proposed shear model of a HPFRCC panel has been applied to the prediction of seismic retrofitted reinforced concrete buildings with in-filled HPFRCC panels. In retrofitted structures, the in-filled HPFRCC element is regarded as a shear spring element of a low-rise shear wall ignoring the flexural response, and reinforced concrete elements for beam or beam-column member are modelled by a finite plastic hinge zone model. An experimental study of reinforced concrete frames with in-filled HPFRCC panels was also carried out and the analysis model was verified with correlation studies of experimental results.

  • Seismic performance of ordinary reinforced concrete shear wall systems commonly used in high-rise residential buildings is evaluated. Three types of shear walls exceeding 60m in height are designed by performance-based seismic design. Then, incremental dynamic analysis is performed collapse probability is assessed in accordance with the procedure of FEMA P695. As a result, story drift, plastic rotation, and compressive strain are observed to be major failure modes, but shear failure occur little. Collapse probability and collapse margin ratio of performance groups do not meet requirement of FEMA P695. It is observed that critical wall elements fail due to excessive compressive strain. Therefore, the compressive strain of concrete at the boundary area of the shear wall needs to be evaluated with more conservative acceptance criteria.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the structural performance of various shear walls, such as the hysteretic behavior, the maximum horizontal strength, crack propagation, and ductility etc. under load reversals. For the diagonal reinforced slit and infilled shear wall specimens, it was found that the failure mode shows very effective crack control and crashing due to slippage prevention of boundary region and reduction of diagonal tension rather than the brittle shear and diagonal tension failure. The ductility of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement for the slit and infilled shear wall was increased 1.72~1.81 times in comparison with the fully rigid shear wall frame. Maximum horizontal load-carrying capacity of specimens designed by the diagonal reinforcement ratio the slit and infilled shear wall was increased respectively by 1.14 times and 1.49 times in comparison with the standard fully rigid shear wall frame.

  • One of the most popular and commonly used strengthening techniques to protect against earthquakes is to infill the holes in reinforced concrete (RC) frames with fully reinforced concrete infills. In some cases, windows and door openings are left inside infill walls for architectural or functional reasons during the strengthening of reinforced concrete-framed buildings. However, the seismic performance of multistory, multibay, reinforced concrete frames that are strengthened by reinforced concrete wing walls is not well known. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the experimental behavior of vulnerable multistory, multibay, reinforced concrete frames that were strengthened by introducing wing walls under a lateral load. For this purpose, three 2-story, 2-bay, 1/3-scale test specimens were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading. The total shear wall (including the column and wing walls) length and the location of the bent beam bars were the main parameters of the experimental study. According to the test results, the addition of wing walls to reinforced concrete frames provided significantly higher ultimate lateral load strength and higher initial stiffness than the bare frames did. While the total shear wall length was increased, the lateral load carrying capacity and stiffness increased significantly.

  • Reinforced concrete shear wall is composed of wall, horizontal and vertical flanges. Due to the abrupt change in its geometry, it is difficult to predict the ultimate behaviour of shear wall in the action of lateral forces. For the better understanding of ultimate state, the propagation of crack and inelastic compressive zone are simulated reasonably. In this study, for the improvement of analysis result for shear wall with flanges, analyses are fulfilled with the application of some modelling methods including various material and geometrical models and numerical methods. The results from various modelling methods are compared and the advisable model is proposed.

  • The use of new hybrid systems that combine the advantages of steel and reinforced concrete structures has gained popularity. One of these new mixed systems consists of steel beams and reinforced concrete shear wall, which represents a cost- and time-effective type of construction. A number of previous studies have focused on examining the seismic response of steel coupling beams in a hybrid wall system. However, the shear transfer of steel coupling beam-wall connections with panel shear failure has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of this research was to investigate the seismic performance of steel coupling beamwall connections governed by panel shear failure. To evaluate the contribution of each mechanism, depending upon connection details, an experimental study was carried out The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behaviour on the steel coupling beam-wall connection, i.e., the face bearing plates and the horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections. It investigates the seismic behaviour of the steel coupling beams-wall connections in terms of the deformation characteristics. The results and discussion presented in this paper provide background for a companion paper that includes a design model for calculating panel shear strength of the steel coupling beam-wall connections.

  • This research presents the nonlinear analysis model for reinforced concrete shear wall systems with special boundary elements as proposed by the Korean Building Code (KBC, 2009). In order to verify the analysis model, analytical results were compared with the experimental results obtained from previous studies. Established analytical model was used to perform nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. Analytical results showed that the semi-special shear wall improved significantly the performance in terms of ductility and energy dissipation as expected based on previous test results. Furthermore, nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis was performed using 20 ground motions. Based on computer analytical results, the ordinary shear wall, special shear wall and newly proposed semi-special shear wall systems were evaluated based on the methods in FEMA P965. The results based on the probabilistic approaches accounting for inherent uncertainties showed that the semi-special shear wall systems provide a high capacity/demand (ACMR) ratio owing to their details, which provide enough capacity to sustain large inelastic deformations.
