  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns with interlocking circular hoops. Three interlocking columns were tested under a constant axial load and a quasistatic, cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The used numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated. Based on the experimental and analytical results, design recommendations are presented to improve the existing practice in the design and construction of reinforced concrete bridge columns with interlocking circular hoops.

  • Fatigue damage to reinforced concrete bridge decks have been found in many bridges. Failure mode of most reinforced concrete decks is caused by local punching shear rather than flexural moment due to cumulated damage. In this study, mechanical degradation of unstrengthened and strengthened bridge deck specimens is experimentally investigated. The unstrengthened deck specimens were damaged under the pulsating loading condition. After the test, deteriorated deck specimens were strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheet, then loaded to observe the improvement of the fatigue behavior. It is shown that fatigue damaged specimens are similar to real bridge rather than static damaged specimens.

  • This study aims towards the improvement of a reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge in an effort to reduce the construction and maintenance costs, and achieve an improved seismic performance. Correspondingly, a new structural rigid connection is proposed for H-shaped steel girders and reinforcing bars at the corner of the rigid-frame structure. Both experiments and numerical analyses were performed. Prototype models were constructed and subjected to static loading tests to reveal their load-carrying capacity and failure mode. Numerical models were then developed using finite elements to evaluate the experimental results. Analyses elicited good agreement between simulation and experimental data and validated the numerical models. Moreover, the validity of the proposed rigid connection was confirmed, and the failure behavior was clarified. Finally, a full-size model of the reinforced concrete rigid-frame bridge with H-shaped steel girders was constructed and subjected to destructive loading tests to evaluate structural integrity of the proposed rigid connection.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge columns using shaking table tests. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. Solution of the equations of motion is obtained by numerical integration using Hither-Hughes-Taylor (HMT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method for the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge columns using shaking table tests is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. Fourteen circular reinforced concrete bridge piers were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. In the companion paper, the proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel is verified by comparison with experimental results.

  • This study proposes and examines a circular composite bridge pier for seismic resistance. The axial and flexural strengths of the proposed bridge pier are provided by the longitudinal reinforcing bars and the concrete, while the transverse reinforcements used in the conventional reinforced concrete pier are replaced by the steel tube. The shear strength of this composite pier relies on the steel tube and the concrete. This system is similar to the steel jacketing method which strengthens the existing reinforced concrete bridge piers. However, no transverse shear reinforcing bar is used in the proposed composite bridge pier. A series of experimental studies is conducted to investigate the seismic resistant characteristics of the proposed circular composite pier. The effects of the longitudinal reinforcing bars, the shear span-to-diameter ratio, and the thickness of the steel tube on the performance of strength, ductility, and energy dissipation of the proposed pier are discussed. The experimental results show that the strength of the proposed circular composite bridge pier can be predicted accurately by the similar method used in the reinforced concrete piers with minor modification. From these experimental studies, it is found that the proposed circular composite bridge pier not only simplifies the construction work greatly but also provides excellent ductility and energy dissipation capacity under seismic lateral force.

  • In the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, concrete and steels are likely to be deteriorated and corroded under the influence of noxious environment. To cope with these problems caused in the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, pultruded composite bridge deck, called Delta Deck, is developed. In this paper, local deflection and fatigue characteristics of Delta Deck for DB24 truck load are evaluated through analysis and experiments.

  • In this paper, we present the results of an experimental research on the load-deflection characteristics of full-scale concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP re-bars. Similar researches have been conducted in many countries to extend the service life of concrete bridge decks, which are under harsh environmental condition. Concrete bridge decks are one of the major concerns for the maintenance of bridges. GFRP re-bar available in the domestic construction market was investigated and the concrete deck reinforced with GFRP re-bars was tested under flexure to investigate the applicability of GFRP re-bar on the bridge deck construction.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of the fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers under earthquake. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. In boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuous deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel. The proposed numerical method for fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete bridge piers under earthquake will be verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Nanocomposite-reinforced concrete systems have gained increasing attention in bridge construction due to their enhanced mechanical properties and durability. Understanding the transient dynamics of these advanced materials is crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and performance of bridge infrastructure under dynamic loading conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the measurement techniques employed for assessing the transient dynamics of nanocompositereinforced concrete systems in bridge construction applications. A numerical method, including modal analysis are discussed in detail, highlighting their advantages, limitations, and applications. Additionally, recent advancements in sensor technologies, data acquisition systems, and signal processing techniques for capturing and analyzing transient responses are explored. The paper also addresses challenges and opportunities in the measurement of transient dynamics, such as the characterization of nanocomposite-reinforced concrete materials, the development of accurate numerical models, and the integration of advanced sensing technologies into bridge monitoring systems. Through a critical review of existing literature and case studies, this paper aims to provide insights into best practices and future directions for the measurement of transient dynamics in nanocompositereinforced concrete systems, ultimately contributing to the design, construction, and maintenance of resilient and sustainable bridge infrastructure.
