  • Partially prestressed concrete members are concrete members reinforced with a combination of prestressed and non-prestressed reinforcement, and also can offer advantages of reinforced concrete. The objective of this study is to develop a design program using Visual Basic language according to the limit state design method which controls crack and check fatigue effectively for partially concrete members.

  • This paper studies the behaviour of deteriorated reinforced concrete (RC) beams attacked by various forms of simulated acid rain. An artificial rainfall simulator was firstly designed and evaluated. Eleven RC beams ($120mm{\times}200mm{\times}1800mm$) were then constructed in the laboratory. Among them, one was acting as a reference beam and the others were subjected to three accelerated corrosion methods, including immersion, wetting-drying, and artificial rainfall methods, to simulate the attack of real acid rain. Acid solutions with pH levels of 1.5 and 2.5 were considered. Next, ultrasonic, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic, and three-point bending tests were performed to investigate the mechanical properties of concrete and flexural behaviour of the RC beams. It can be concluded that the designed artificial simulator can be effectively used to simulate the real acid rainfall. Both the immersion and wetting-drying methods magnify the effects of the real acid rainfall on the RC beams.

  • Future bridge decks must have high load-resistance capacity as well as fatigue strength to withstand the increase in traffic loading and the increase in span length between girders due to the decrease in the number of main girders. Steel-concrete composite bridge decks may be proper deck types to satisfy such requirements. To promote the application of composite bridge decks, a rational process to predict and evaluate the fatigue behavior of steel concrete composite bridge deck is required. Various types of steel-concrete composite bridge decks have been developed in many countries. In this study, combining advantages of the existing composite deck types, a new type of composite bridge deck is proposed. An experimental study is performed to examine the fatigue behavior of the proposed composite bridge deck. This composite bridge deck consists of corrugated steel sheet, welded T-beams, stud-type shear connectors and reinforced concrete filler. The fatigue tests are conducted under four-point bending test with three different stress ranges in constant amplitude. The fatigue category of the fillet welding between corrugated steel sheet and the T-beam is evaluated based on the S-N data obtained from the experiment.

Experimental analysis of an asymmetric reinforced concrete bridge under vehicular loads

  • Dynamic response of a three span continuous bridge has been determined by full scale experiments on the bridge. In the experiments, a heavy vehicle was driven across the bridge at different speeds and along different lanes of travel and the strains were recorded at different locations. The bridge was made of reinforced concrete and was asymmetric in plan and in elevation. Frequencies and modes of vibration excited by the vehicle were determined. The dependence of the dynamic amplification on bridge location and vehicle speed was investigated and dynamic amplifications up to 1.5 were recorded, which was higher than values predicted by bridge design codes. It was evident that when this asymmetric bridge was loaded by an asymmetric forcing function, higher modes, which are lateral and/or torsional in nature, were excited. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and the support stiffness influenced the natural frequencies of the bridge, which in turn influenced the dynamic amplifications. Larger than anticipated dynamic amplification factors and the excitation of lateral and/or torsional modes should be of interest and concern to bridge engineers.

  • Reliability analysis of the design of reinforced concrete rahmen bridge is performed. Statistical properties for loads and resistances are taken into account in the analysis and the reliability indices are calculated for strength limit state of the current bridge design specification. Results are presented and discussed for different span lengths and wall heights.

  • Considerable research has been done to study the fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete bridge deck which is strengthened by carbon fiber sheets. Before the strengthening, the specimen was damaged by repeated loads with various repeat cycles. The results of this study show that strengthening efficiency is getting rised in the lower pre-damaged degree. When the fatigue damaged bridge-deck is strengthened, the crack propagation may be controled efficiently

Reinforced high-strength concrete square columns confined by aramid FRP jackets -part I: experimental study

  • Although retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns by wrapping fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become a popular technique in civil engineering, the study on reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns is still not sufficient. The objective of these companion papers is to investigate the mechanical properties of reinforced HSC square columns confined by aramid FRP (AFRP) jackets under concentric compressive loading. In the part I of these companion papers, an experiment was conducted on 54 confined RC specimens and nine unconfined plain specimens, the considered parameters were the concrete strength, the thickness of AFRP jackets, and the form of AFRP wrapping. The experimental process and results are presented in detail. Subsequently, some discussions on the confinement effect, failure modes, strength, and ductility of the columns are carried out.

  • Ductility is an important consideration in the design of reinforced high-strength concrete. Therefore, this research investigate the ductile behavior of rectangular high-strength concrete columns like as bridge piers with confinement steel. The effect on the ductility of axial load, lateral reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear ratio, and compressive strength of concrete were investigated analytically using layered section analysis. As the results, it was proposed the proper relationship between ductility and variables and formulated into equations.

  • Bridge structure is known as one of important infrafacilities for comfortable human life. Recent long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the seaside without in-depth consideration of concrete durability problem. It is in particular noted tat corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete is very important for the durability enhancement of concrete structures. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steels in concrete specimens which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwaters, and then to develop pertinent corrosion protection system such as rational cover depth, corrosion inhibitors, cathodic system for reinforced bridges exposed to marine environment.

  • Ka-Hwa highway bridge, located in a corrosive marine environment, had been examined the current condition of reinforcement corrosion in concrete throughout half-cell potentials, electrical resistivity, chloride contamination of concrete, and visual observation. According to the test, the chloride corrosion reinforced concrete structure is not only the protecting film around the reinforcement is deteriorated but also corrosion activity develops, for example, delamination areas of concrete. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of Ka-Hwa highway bridge damaged by chlodide attack and to present the results of repair of Ka-Hwa highway concrete bridge in domestic marine environment.
