  • The design of column joint is an important part of earthquake resistant design of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames. Beam column joints must provide sufficient stiffness and strength to resist and sustain the loads induced by adjacent beams and columns. This paper investigates the difference of the current design codes which provide a different approach for the design of beam column joint in seismic zone. The model provided by Hitoshi Shiohara(1998) is reviewed in this paper, which provides a good relationship between moment and shear action of interior beam column joint and a role shear reinforcement according to their position.

  • Seismic performance of structures depends on the force flow mechanism inside the structure. Discontinuity regions, like beam-column joints, are often affected during earthquake event due to the complex and discontinuous load paths. The evaluation of shear strength and identification of failure mode of the joint region are helpful to (i) define the strength hierarchy of the beam-column sub-assemblage, (ii) quantify the influence of different parameters on the behaviour of beam-column joint and, (iii) develop suitable and adequate strengthening scheme for the joints, if required, to obtain the desired strength hierarchy. In view of this, it is very important to estimate the joint shear strength and identify the failure modes of the joint region as it is the most critical part in any beam-column sub-assemblage. One of the most effective models is softened strut and tie model which was developed by incorporating force equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked reinforced concrete. In this study, softened strut and tie model, which incorporates force equilibrium equations, compatibility conditions and material constitutive relation of the cracked concrete, are used to simulate the shear strength behaviour and to identify failure mechanisms of the beam-column joints. The observations of the present study will be helpful to arrive at the design strategy of the joints to ensure the desired failure mechanism and strength hierarchy to achieve sustainability of structural systems under seismic loading.

  • This paper provides a method to predict the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beam-column joints that fail in shear after the plastic hinges occur at both ends of the adjacent beams. The proposed method takes into account shear strength deterioration in the beam-column joints. The shear strength and the corresponding ductility of the proposed method was verified by comparing with the four RC beam-column assembles under reversed cyclic loading corrected from the technical literature. Comparisons between the observed and calculated shear strengths and their corresponding ductilities of the tested assembles, showed reasonable agreement

  • The main objective of this study was to examine structural behavior of reinforced concrete column and steel beam joint. composite specimens about 3/4 of the actual beam column connection assembly were tested by applying cyclic load through actuators. Test variables include face bearing plate(FBP), extended face bearing plate(E-FBP), VIR, U-bar and sub beam. There is not much differenced between specimens with sub beam and without sub beam. Test results also show that the joint strength of test specimen is close to the predicted strength by ASCE guideline.

  • It has been shown that many Reinforced Concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations into the performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loading were presented. The CFRP has been applied by choosing different combinations and locations to determine the effective way to improve structural performances of joints. Eight beam-column joints were tested to investigate behaviors of each specimen under cyclic load and to compare performances of seismic retrofit. According to the experimental study, the retrofit strengthened with the CFRP provides significant improvements of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column joints originally built without seismic details.

  • In the present study, in reinforced concrete structures, beam-column connections are one of the most critical regions in areas with seismic susceptibility. Proper anchorage of reinforcement is vital to enhance the performance of beam-column joints. Congestion of reinforcement and construction difficulties are reported frequently while using conventional reinforcement detailing in beam-column joints of reinforced concrete structures. An effort has been made to study and evaluate the performance of beam-column joints with joint detailing as per ACI-352 (mechanical anchorage), ACI-318 (conventional hooks bent) and IS-456(full anchorage conventional hooks bent) along with confinement as per IS-13920 and without confinement. Apart from finding solutions for these problems, significant improvements in seismic performance, ductility and strength were observed while using mechanical anchorage in combination with X-cross bars for less seismic prone areas and X-cross bar plus hair clip joint reinforcement for higher seismic prone areas. To evaluate the performances of these types of anchorages and joint details, the specimens were assembled into four groups, each group having three specimens have been tested under reversal loading and the results are presented in this paper.

  • Beam-column joints are highly vulnerable locations which are to be designed for high ductility in order to take care of unexpected lateral forces such as wind and earthquake. Previous investigations reveal that the addition of steel fibres to concrete improves its ductility significantly. Also, due to presence of slab the strength and ductility of the beam increases considerably and ignoring the effect of slab can lead to underestimation of beam capacity and defiance of strong column weak beam concept. The influence of addition of steel fibres on the strength and behaviour of steel fibre reinforced high performance concrete (SFRHPC) interior beam-column-slab joints was investigated experimentally. The specimens were subjected to reverse cyclic loading. The variable considered was the volume fraction of crimped steel fibres i.e., 0%, 0.5% and 1.0%. The results show that the addition of steel fibres improves the first crack load, strength, ductility, energy absorption capacity and initial stiffness of the beam.

  • This study proposes a joint model consisting of different types of members as a new structural system, and then investigates the resulting structural behavior. The joint model consists of a concrete-filled steel tube column (CFT) together with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus reinforced concrete beam at the center. For comparison, two other joint models were designed, that are, a CPT with a reinforced concrete beam, and a CFT with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus steel concrete beam at the center, then their joint capacity and rigidity, energy absorption capacity, etc., were all investigated. From the results, the CFT column with a steel reinforced concrete at the end plus steel concrete beam at the center was outstanding in terms of its capacity and rigidity. The results of this analysis demonstrate that an adequate connection type and reinforcement method with different materials of increasing the rigidity, thereby producing a capacity improvement along with protection from pre-fractures.

  • In this study a new innovative method of earthquake-resistant strengthening of reinforced concrete structures is presented for the first time. Strengthening according to this new method consists of the construction of steel fiber ultra-high-strength concrete jackets without conventional reinforcement which is usually applied in the construction of conventional reinforced concrete jackets. An innovative solution is proposed also for the first time that ensures a satisfactory seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete structures, strengthened by using composite materials. The weak point of the use of such materials in repairing and strengthening of old R/C structures is the area of beam-column joints. According to the proposed solution, the joints can be strengthened with a steel fiber ultra-high-strength concrete jacket, while strengthening of columns can be achieved by using CFRPs. The experimental results showed that the performance of the subassemblage strengthened with the proposed mixed solution was much better than that of the subassemblage retrofitted completely with CFRPs.

  • The primary objective of this study is to make a contribution to the construction of 40~60 story R/C high rise building by developing the reinforcing details which can improve the seismic performance of high-strength (f'c=700kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, fy=4000, 8000kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) R/C beam-column joints. And the purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of load history on the total energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete flexural members. The reinforcing details which can make beam plastic hinging zones moved and spreaded from the column face is proposed to insure the ductile behavior of high-strength RC beam-column joints. The intermediate reinforcement which is horizontally anchored by interlinking each intermediate reinforcements is proposed and tested to examine the mechanical performance of proposed details. Main variables are the shape of the intermediate reinforcements and yield strength of rebars. From the test results, the newly proposed intermediate reinforcement details can move and spread the beam plastic hinging zone about 1.0d from the column face.
