  • The potential shear strength of reinforced concrete beams decreases after flexural yielding due to the decrease of the effective compressive strength of concrete in plastic hinge zone. A truss model considering shear deterioration in the plastic hinge zone was proposed in order to evaluate the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear after flexural yielding This model can determine the potential shear strength of the beam by using a truss model. The potential shear strength gradually decreases as the increase of the axial strain of member. When the calculated potential shear strength decreases up to the flexural yielding strength, the corresponding rotation angle is defined as the ductile capacity of the beam. The predicted ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams is shown to be in a good agreement with experimental results.

  • This paper presents the test results of RCS(Reinforced Concrete Steel) beam-column joint with various types of transverse reinforcements such as small-column-type transverse reinforcements, four-piece ㄱ-shape assembled hoops and four-piece ㄱ-shape welded hoops. Five interior beam-column joint specimens were tested to examine the seismic performance and the shear strengths. From the test results, it was found that all the specimens sustained their strength at large levels of story drift(${\theta}$=0.035) without significant loss of strength and stiffness. Therefore it was concluded that the seismic performance and shear strength of the proposed RCS joint are at least the same as those of the specimen with conventional reinforcing details. Also, the contribution of the outer panel to the shear strength of the joint should be evaluated by the compression strut mechanism rather than compression field mechanism.

  • Compared with a steel-reinforced section with equal areas of longitudinal reinforcement, a cross section using FRP flexural reinforcement after cracking has a smaller depth to the neutral axis because of the lower axial stiffness. The compression region of the cross section is reduced, and the crack widths are wider. As a result, the shear resistance provided by both aggregate interlock and compressed concrete is smaller. Research on the shear capacity of flexural members without shear reinforcement has indicated that the concrete shear strength is influenced by the stiffness of the flexural reinforcement. In this research, experimental observations were made for the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beam and validity of existing predicting equations were examined. Test results showed that shear strength decreased as shear-span increased.

  • Beams strengthened in shear with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) which had different transverse reinforcement ratio were tested to evaluate shear contribution in the CFRP and to analyze shear behavior of each test with Mohr's circle. Strain in the CFRP should be evaluated to estimate the shear contribution in the CFRP which is brittle material. Test results were compared each other based on the Mohr's circle which can correlate shear strain with both principal tensile strain and crack angle. With low transverse steel ratio, shear strengthening with CFRP not only increases the shear strength effectively but also minimizes the loss in shear contribution of concrete by limiting the development of crack. With high transverse steel ratio, the effect on shear strengthening with CFRP is not as much as the beam with low ratio. Therefore, the shear contribution in the CFRP should be evaluated based on the strain compatibility which can consider the interaction between steel and CFRP when determining the shear capacity of a strengthened member.

  • Degraded shear performance of reinforced concrete members with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) compared to flexural strength is a problem. To address this, steel fibers can be used as concrete reinforcement material. In this study, the strength and deformation characteristics of SFRC beams using RCA were to be determined by shear tests. Major experimental variables include the volume fraction of steel fiber (0, 0.5%, 1%), the replacement rate of RCA (0%, 100%), and the shear span ratio (a/d = 1, 2). As a result of the experiment, the shear strength of the specimen increased as the rate of mixing steel fiber increased. For specimens with RCA and 1% steel fiber, the maximum shear strengths increased by 1.77 - 6.25% compared to specimens with normal coarse aggregate (NCA). On the other hand, at 0-0.5% steel fiber, the shear strengths of RCA specimens were reduced by 24.2% to 49.2% compared to NCA specimens. This indicates that reinforcement with 1% volume fraction of steel fiber greatly contributes to preventing shear strength reduction due to the use of RCA.

  • Researches on strengthening and rehabilitation are important since structural capacity is degraded by deterioration or damage of structural members. An effective strengthening scheme such as an externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) can improve the structural performance of a concrete structure in a cost-effective way. Therefore, many experimental studies on strengthening methods have been widely carried out. In regards to the shear strengthening of a concrete beam, variables of the experimental studies were the amount of CFRP, the angle of the strip, the width of the strip, and the interaction between the materials. However, there are insufficient researches on bi-directional CFRP layout compared to the previous researches. In this study, a total of ten concrete beams were designed and tested to evaluate the shear strengthening effect using CFRP strips. The effectiveness of strengthening was investigated based on the shear contribution of materials, strain distribution of stirrup, and the maximum shear capacity of specimens.

  • In this paper, the effect of the masonry infill walls on the seismic performance of the reinforced concrete(RC) frames with non-seismic details was evaluated through the static test of an masonry infilled RC frame sub-assemblage with non-seismic details of real size, and comparison with the test results of the RC frame sub-assemblage with non-seismic details. As the test results, lots of cracks occurred on the surface of the entire frame due to the compression of the masonry infilled wall, and the beam-column joint finally collapsed with the expansion of the shear crack and buckling(exposure) of the reinforcement. On the other hand, the stiffness of the shear force-story drift relationship decreased due to the wall sliding crack and column flexural cracks, and the strength finally decreased by around 60% of the maximum strength. The damage that concentrated on the upper and lower parts of columns was dispersed in the entire frame such as columns, a beam, and beam-column joints due to the wall, and the specimen was finally collapsed by expansion of the shear crack of the joint, not the shear crack of the column. Also, the stiffness of RC frame increased by 12.42 times and the yield strength by 3.63 times, while the story drift at maximum strength decreased by 0.18 times.

  • Replacement of FRP rod as steel reinforcement has been attracted significantly to prevent the degradation of the concrete structure due to corrosion. So, the technology development to extend the structure's service life by improving FRP properties has been proceeded worldwide. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop Korea's CFRP rod and CFRP grid, including the manufacturing techniques to improve the properties of high-strength and high-stiffness. Moreover, the research should be conducted to evaluate the structural behavior of the beams using the CFRP rod or grid. This study investigates the flexural and shear behavior of reinforced concrete beam using demonstrated CFRP rod as reinforcement according to the reinforcement ratio and shear span to depth ratio. From the results, when the reinforcement ratio is out of a specific range, it is seemed that the effect on performance improvement of the beam using CFRP rod is cancelled or not significant. Meanwhile, when the CFRP rod was used as reinforcement, the possibility of shear failure occurred, even steel stirrups were installed in the beam with CFRP rod as tensile reinforcement according to the Korean Design Standard. Therefore, when the CFRP rod is used as tensile reinforcement in a beam, it should be prepared that a specific limitation of reinforcement ratio and an investigation against shear failure. Also, the ductility of the beam using the CFRP rod is determined by the deformation energy evaluation method. So, the ductility should be investigated by applying the deformation energy evaluation method that reflects the structural behavior of the beam.

  • The shear wall system with coupling beams has been known as an effective means for moderate and high rise buildings up to 40 stories, because this structural system can provide the enhanced lateral stiffness compared to individual shear walls. Typical reinforced concrete coupling beams have difficulties in construction due to complicated reinforcing work on site, and steel coupling beams also have disadvantages in economical point of view because of a large number of stiffeners required for its stability under lateral loading. To overcome these disadvantages in existing coupling beam systems, this study developed the prestressed composite coupling beam with discontinuous webs, which have improved constructability, economic feasibility, and reduced sectional size. The reversed cyclic loading test on two prestressed composite coupling beams with discontinuous webs having different shear reinforcement ratios have been conducted to investigate their structural performances, and test results showed that the proposed composite coupling beams had good seismic performances.

  • In this study, a comparative analysis have been conducted to examine seismic reinforcement effect of a school building that is designed with a CBD (Channel Beam Damper) system supported by H-frame with existing non-seismic RC frame. As a result of experiment, seismic reinforcement specimen with CBD system showed hysteretic characteristics of a large ellipse with great energy dissipation ability and increased strength and stiffness, while non-seismic design specimen showed rapid reduction in strength and brittle shear failure at top and bottom of the left and right column. In addition, comparing the stiffness reduction between the two specimens, CBD system was effective in preventing the reduction of stiffness. Energy dissipation ability of specimen reinforced by CBD system was about 4.0 times higher than the non-reinforced specimen. Such enhancement in energy dissipation ability could be considered as the result of improved strength and deformation for further application in designing of seismic reinforcement.
