  • This research is related to the experimental investigation of the inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete columns. A total of 12 specimens have been cast with different span ratios, steel reinforcements and load applications. Through the tests axial forces have been kept constantly at 40 tons while the bending moments were applied incremently and careful observations were given to the initial crack formation, crack pattern and propagation.

  • This research has been carried out experimently to verify the structural efficiency of the reinforced concrete columns subjected to cyclic lateral loadings in the inelastic range. Sixteen specimens have been used in the tests, the factors such as reinforcing bars, shear-span ratio, axial load level and loading history being taken differently. The load-carrying capacities and the stiffness degradation in the inelastic range by cycle lateral load application have been counted by observing the load-deformation relationship, the crack initiation and propagation and the energy dissipation phenomena.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are crucial in building structures and they are of higher vulnerability to terrorist threat than any other structural elements. Thus it is of great interest and necessity to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the possible responses of RC columns when exposed to high intensive blast loads. The primary objective of this study is to derive analytical formulas to assess vulnerability of RC columns using an advanced numerical modelling approach. This investigation is necessary as the effect of blast loads would be minimal to the RC structure if the explosive charge is located at the safe standoff distance from the main columns in the building and therefore minimizes the chance of disastrous collapse of the RC columns. In the current research, finite element model is developed for RC columns using LS-DYNA program that includes a comprehensive discussion of the material models, element formulation, boundary condition and loading methods. Numerical model is validated to aid in the study of RC column testing against the explosion field test results. Residual capacity of RC column is selected as damage criteria. Intensive investigations using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) methodology are then implemented to evaluate the influence of scaled distance, column dimension, concrete and steel reinforcement properties and axial load index on the vulnerability of RC columns. The generated empirical formulae can be used by the designers to predict a damage degree of new column design when consider explosive loads. With an extensive knowledge on the vulnerability assessment of RC structures under blast explosion, advancement to the convention design of structural elements can be achieved to improve the column survivability, while reducing the lethality of explosive attack and in turn providing a safer environment for the public.

  • This study evaluated the effectiveness of V-shaped ties as an alternative to the supplementary crossties specified in ACI 318-14 on the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete columns. From column specimens tested under constant axial loads and reversed cyclic lateral loads, the mode of failure and lateral load-lateral displacement relationship were measured according to the variation of the applied axial load levels. After the columns reached the peak lateral load capacity, the $90^{\circ}$ hooks of the crossties gradually opened, which eventually caused premature buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement and severe crushing of the core concrete, whereas no V-ties were extracted from the core concrete until the column failure. As a result, the cumulative work damage indicators up to 80% of the peak lateral load for V-tie columns under the axial load level of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.55 was as much as 2.4, 2.3, and 5.2 times higher, respectively, than those of the companion crosstie columns. The superiority of the V-ties to the conventional crossties in enhancing the flexural ductility of columns became more prominent as the axial load level increases.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate seismic performance of reinforced concrete pier columns in Seohae Ground Bridge. Since the bridge was designed before preparing the seismic design specification the bridge columns of hollow hexagonal section were designed and constructed with insufficient seismic reinforcement details such as longitudinal and transverse reinforcement lap-splices. In order to take the necessary measures to improve its seismic performance experimental study was performed by small-scale test for the bridge columns, From the quasi-static test for small-scale column specimens the lap-splices were not critical for overall behavior of the column if sufficient lap-splice-length was provided. The test results of failure mode effective stiffness ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio are presented.

  • Concrete-filled tubes (CFT), formed by an outer steel tube filled with plain or reinforced concrete inside, have been increasingly used these recent decades as columns or beam-columns, especially for tall buildings in seismic areas due to their excellent structural response. This improved behavior is derived from the effect of confinement provided by the tube, since the compressive strength of concrete increases when being subjected to hydrostatic pressure. In circular CFTs under compression, the whole tube is uniformly tensioned due to the radial expansion of concrete. Contrarily, in rectangular and square-shaped CFTs, the lateral flanges become subjected to in-plane bending derived from this volumetric expansion, and this fact implies a reduction of the confinement effect of the core. This study presents a numerical analysis of different configurations of CFT stub columns with inner stiffening plates, limited to the study of the influence of these plates on the compressive behavior without eccentricity. The final purpose is to evaluate the efficiency in terms of strength and ductility of introducing stiffeners into circular and square CFT sections under large deformation axial loading.

  • To analyze the effects compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on second-order moment of columns, 30tied rein reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 80mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 24mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 10, 60, and 100were 250, 648 and 880kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.98%(4-D6) and 3.95%(8-D6). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity (Pu/Pn) was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of slender column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that with increasing steel ratio, the value of Pu/Pn and the lateral displacement at the ultimate load were larger for the same slenderness ratio.

  • The objective of this experimental investigation is to examine the feasibility and the usefulness of the complementary crosstie in the current ACI 318-89 code for rienforced concrete columns subjected to constant axial load and lateral load reversals. Tests were conducted on1/3 scaled four columns with the length of 1.9m and the cross section of 20$\times$20 cm. The main parameters of specimens were the magnitude of axial load applied and the configuration of transverse reinforcements . From the experimental results, it can be seen that while the column subjected to lower axial load represented considerable ductility behaviors, the column subjected to higher axial load showed the brittle failure

  • This paper is a part of a research plan aimed at the verification of basic design rules of high-strength concrete columns. A total of 19 slender column specimens were tested to measure secondary moment and stiffness of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete tied columns. Main variables included in this test program were concrete compressive strength, steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 356kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 951kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.13% and 5.51%, and slenderness ratios were 40 and 61. Calculated moment magnification factors and column stiffness based on design codes are higher than the test results for high axial load under small eccentricity, for higher slenderness ratio, for lower longitudinal steel ratio, and for high-strength concrete. The moment magnification method of the current design codes may provide a very conservative design for high-strength concrete slender column.

  • In recent years, the use of FRP composites to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been widely used. When the columns of existing RC structures are wrapped with FRP composites, the core concrete of such columns is confined not only by the FRP composites but also by the existing steel reinforcing ties (or spirals). Therefore, it is necessary to understand correctly the compressive response of concrete confined with both steel spirals and FRP composites in order to predict the behavior of such RC columns. This paper proposes a model to predict the compressive stress-strain curves of concrete confined with FRP and steel reinforcing ties.
