  • Recent destructive seismic events demonstrated the importance of mitigating human casualties and serious property damages in design and construction of structures. The Korean Bridge Design Specifications (1992) adopted seismic design requirements based on the AASHTO specification, and minor modification was made in 2000. The longitudinal steel connection of reinforced concrete bridge column is sometimes practically unavoidable. The longitudinal reinforcement details affect seisimc performance such as flexural failure and shear failure. This research aims to develop longitudinal steel connection details with confinement steel by experimental study for seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. Quasi-static test under three different axial load levels was conducted for 12 spiral column specimens. All the column specimens had the same aspect ratio of 3.5. The column specimens were transversely reinforced with spiral and with five different longitudinal steel connection. The final objective of this study is to suggest appropriate longitudinal reinforcement connection details for the limited ductility design concept and improve construction quality.

  • An experimental investigation on the strength and behavior of High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cement Composite(HPFRCC) column with Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) fibers under axial load have been carried out. The columns were subjected to monotonic axial compression until failure. The variables in this study are the combination ratio of PVA, and the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. Test results showed that the fibers, when used in PVA2.0, could result in superior composite performance compared to their individual fiber reinforced cement composites.

  • In this paper, Recycled aggregate replacement levels were considered. Five columns are tested under axial load. Compressive strength of reinforced concrete columns with recycled aggregate showed higher than that provided in KCI 2007. The KCI provision were conservative and subsequently can be used for design of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete column.

  • The analysis method proposed by PCA is widely used in calculating the column shortening of reinforced and composite columns of a tall building. However, residual creep factor which relates creep strain of reinforced concrete to creep strain of plain concrete is based on Rate of Creep Method (RCM) which has theoretical defects and is considered obsolete. In this paper, a new equation for the residual creep factor based on Age-adjusted Effective Modulus Method (AEMM) which is considered exact and better than RCM is proposed. The residual creep factor by RCM is found to be higher than one by AEMM, which means current PCA method overestimates the shortening of a reinforced concrete column. By using the residual creep factor by AEMM, more exact column shortening of a tall building can be obtainable with a simple modification to PCA method.

  • This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for minimum-cost design of the reinforced concrete frame structures consisting of beams and columns. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, reinforced steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection at a prescribed node, bending and shear strengths in beams, uniaxial bending strength of columns according to design codes(CEB/FIP, 1990). In the first stage, only beams with uniform cross-sectional parameters per span are considered. But the steel ratio is allowed to vary freely. The cross-sectional parameters and steel ratio in each column are assumed to be uniform for practical reasons. Optimality criteria is given based on the well known Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, followed by an iterative procedure for designs when the design variables are the depth and the steel ratio. The versatility of the DCOC technique has been demonstrated by considering numerical examples which have one-bay four-storey frame.

  • Although earthquakes generate random cyclic lateral loading on structures, a quasi-static cyclic loading pattern with gradually increasing amplitude has been commonly used in the laboratory tests because of its relatively low cost and simplicity compared with pseudo-dynamic and shake table tests. The number, amplitudes and sequence of cycles must be chosen appropriately as important parameters of a quasi-static cyclic loading pattern in order to account for cumulative damage matter. This paper aims to reach a new cyclic displacement pattern to be used in quasi-static tests of well-confined, flexure-dominated reinforced concrete (RC) columns. The main parameters of the study are sectional dimensions, percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, axial force intensity and earthquake types, namely, far-fault and near-fault.

  • The ductility of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. The results of analytical moment-curvature analyses for such hollow sections are compared with those for the circular section with the sane diameter. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mandel's confined concrete stress-strain relationship in which the effect of confinement is to increase the compression strength and ultimate strain of concrete. The moment-curvature analyses confirmed that the ductility is primarily influenced on the ultimate strain. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.

  • Every structure has the expected life span of its own and it has to be rebuilt. New buildings were preferred and put value a quantitative spread of apartment houses because of the rapid growth of national economy. Therefore, the apartment houses were not taken into consideration about maintenances. Carbon fiber sheet is widely used to strengthen old structural members but it is very rarely applied to a construction field for apartment houses. The purpose of this study is to develop effective strengthening methods for reinforced concrete columns using carbon fiber sheets. Eight reinforced concrete column specimens confined by carbon fiber sheet of uniaxial direction were tested using 10,000kN universal testing machine (UTM).

  • In the previous research, the axial compressive capacity models for the glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP)-reinforced circular concrete compression elements restrained with GFRP helix were put forward based on small and noisy datasets by considering a limited number of parameters portraying less accuracy. Consequently, it is important to recommend an accurate model based on a refined and large testing dataset that considers various parameters of such components. The core objective and novelty of the current research is to suggest a deep learning model for the axial compressive capacity of GFRP-reinforced circular concrete columns restrained with a GFRP helix utilizing various parameters of a large experimental dataset to give the maximum precision of the estimates. To achieve this aim, a test dataset of 61 GFRP-reinforced circular concrete columns restrained with a GFRP helix has been created from prior studies. An assessment of 15 diverse theoretical models is carried out utilizing different statistical coefficients over the created dataset. A novel model utilizing the group method of data handling (GMDH) has been put forward. The recommended model depicted good effectiveness over the created dataset by assuming the axial involvement of GFRP main bars and the confining effectiveness of transverse GFRP helix and depicted the maximum precision with MAE = 195.67, RMSE = 255.41, and R2 = 0.94 as associated with the previously recommended equations. The GMDH model also depicted good effectiveness for the normal distribution of estimates with only a 2.5% discrepancy from unity. The recommended model can accurately calculate the axial compressive capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete compression elements that can be considered for further analysis and design of such components in the field of structural engineering.

  • In this paper, sixteen column specimens were tested under the concentrated and excentric load condition to examine the structural behavior of strengthened columns. 16 column specimens were divided into four groups. One group is not strengthened, the other three groups are strengthened by the materials : 1) steel plate, 2) carbon fiber sheet, and 3) glass fiber sheet, each group is composed of four specimens. As a result, strengthened columns have larger bearing capacity and energy absorption after ultimate load than unstrengthened columns. The column group strengthened with steel plate has the best bearing capacity among the strengthened column groups. Also, the columns strengthened with the carbon fiber sheet are similar to glass fiber sheet in bearing capacity. If necessary to strengthen columns in trouble, car should be taken to treat the joint between beam and column because of crack propagation in tension side.
