  • The present paper investigates the post heating behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars, namely carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Thirty rectangular concrete beams were prepared and cured for 28 days. Then, beams were either subjected (in duplicates) to elevated temperatures in the range (100 to $500^{\circ}C$) or left at room temperature before tested under four point loading for flexural response. Experimental results showed that beams, reinforced with CFRP and GFRP bars and subjected to temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$, showed better mechanical performance than that of corresponding ones with conventional reinforcing steel bars. The results also revealed that ultimate load capacity and stiffness pertaining to beams with FRP reinforcement decreased, yet their ultimate deflection and toughness increased with higher temperatures. All beams reinforced with FRP materials, except those post-heated to $500^{\circ}C$, failed by concrete crushing followed by tension failure of FRP bars.

  • In this study, it evaluate the tensile properties of polyamide fiber reinforced cementitious composite and hooked steel fiber reinforced cementitious Composites by strain rate. Polyamide fiber reinforced cement composites (PAFRCC) and Hooked Steel Fiber Reinforced Cement Composite(HSFRCC) were fabricated. Each specimen was reinforced with 1.0 and 2.0vol% fiber. The length of the reinforced fiber was 30 mm for both fibers, and the tensile test specimen was made in dumbbell shape. As a result, the tensile strength of fiber in polyamide fiber and the mechanical bonding between fiber and matrix in hooked steel fiber are considered to be the main factors affecting tensile behavior of fiber reinforced cement composite.

  • In this thesis, the fracture tests were performed on a series of reinforced concrete to investigate the variation of strength and the fracture safety of reinforced concrete structures. The specimens were of the same rectangular cross-section, of effective height 24cm and width 30cm and their span was 330cm. The three point loading system is used in the fracture tests. In these tests, the yield load, the ultimate load, the flexural strain and the mid-span displacement were detected. According to the results of these tests, the fracture behavior of reinforced concrete structures can be summarized as the follows : There Is no difference between the singly and doubly reinforced rectangular beams before the yield load. But from the yield load up to the ultimate load, the mid-span displacement of the singly reinforced rectangular beams are about two times larger than those of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams, The fracture energy of the doubly reinforced rectangular beams are one and half times compared to that of the singly reinforced rectangular beams. Based on the above investigation, it could be concluded that the doubly reinforced rectangular beam is more efficient to resist the brittle fracture than the singly reinforced rectangular beam.

  • To study the bearing characteristics of glass fiber reinforced glulam for structural design, bearing strength tests were performed. Bearing loads were applied in the direction parallel to the grains, and the holes were prepared in such a way that the bolts would bear and support all the layers. The yield bearing strengths of the glass fiber reinforced glulam were found to be similar to those of the non-reinforced glulam, and were almost constant regardless of increases in bolt diameter. The ratio of the experimental yield bearing strength to the estimated bearing strength according to the suggested equation of the Korea Building Code and National Design Specification was 0.91~1.03. For the non-reinforced glulam and the sheet glass fiber reinforced plastic glulam, the maximum bearing load was measured according to the splitting fracture of specimens under bolt. The textile glass fiber reinforced glulam underwent only an embedding failure caused by the bearing load. The failure mode of reinforced glulam according to bearing load will influence the failure behavior of bolted connection, and estimating the shear yield strength of the bolted connection of the reinforced glulam is necessary, not only by using the bearing strength characteristics but also using the fracture toughness of the reinforced glulam.

  • The current study focuses on the assessment and interface response of reinforced concrete elements with composite materials (carbon fiber reinforced polymers-CFRPs, glass fiber reinforced polymers-GFRPs, textile reinforced mortars-TRM's, near surface mounted bars-NSMs). A description of the transfer mechanisms from concrete elements to the strengthening materials is conducted through analytical models based on failure modes: plate end interfacial debonding and intermediate flexural crack induced interfacial debonding. A database of 55 in total reinforced concrete columns (scale 1:1) is assembled containing elements rehabilitated with various techniques (29 wrapped with CFRP's, 5 wrapped with GFRP's, 4 containing NSM and 4 strengthened with TRM). The failure modes are discussed together with the performance level of each technique as well as the efficiency level in terms of ductility and bearing/ bending capacity. The analytical models' results are in acceptable agreement with the experimental data and can predict the failure modes. Despite the heterogeneity of the elements contained in the aforementioned database the results are of high interest and point out the need to incorporate the analytical expressions in design codes in order to predict the failure mechanisms and the limit states of bearing capacities of each technique.

  • Test specimen test was performed using concrete reinforced with fiber sheet and the test variables were based on the kinds of fiber and the number of reinforcement layers. Using steel-concrete reinforced with fiber sheet, compression tests were performed and the test variables were the kinds of fiber, number reinforcement layers and reinforcement layer order. The following results were obtained: 1) It was demonstrated that compressive strength of the test specimen reinforced during test specimen test and member test increased as the number of reinforcement layers increased. 2) It was shown that non-reinforced test, specimen were destroyed during the member tests, but the specimen reinforced with CFS destroyed and the GFS-reinforced specimen and composite reinforced specimen showed ductile destruction. 3) As a result of tests on kinds of reinforcement fiber, it was demonstrated that CFS-reinforced test specimen had higher compressive strength in a 공시체 test. In the member test, 2ply-and 3ply-GFS reinforced specimens except lplied one had higher compressive strength. It was because partial destruction occurred due to the rate of height/section. 4) For layer strength order, compared with test specimen reinforced only with a single reinforced material, test specimen reinforced with CFS and GFS, and test specimen reinforced with CFS first showed better results in compressive strength and ductility judgement.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs), since their first discovery, have been considered as new promising materials in various fields of applications including field emission displays, memory devices, electrodes, NEMS constituents, hydrogen storages and reinforcements in composites due to their extra-ordinary properties. The carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites have attracted attention owing to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties and are expected to overcome the limit of conventional materials. Various application areas are possible for carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites through the functionalization of carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites have been fabricated by liquid phase process including surface functionalization and dispersion of CNTs within organic solvent. In case of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the mechanical strength and electrical conducting can be improved by more than an order of magnitude. The carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites can be applied to high strength polymers, conductive polymers, optical limiters and EMI materials. In spite of successful development of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer matrix nanocomposites, the researches on carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic matrix nanocomposites show limitations due to a difficulty in homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within inorganic matrix. Therefore, the enhancement of carbon nanotube reinforced inorganic nanocomposites is under investigation to maximize the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes. To overcome the current limitations, novel processes, including intensive milling process, sol-gel process, in-situ process and spark plasma sintering of nanocomposite powders are being investigated. In this presentation, current research status on carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites with various matrices are reviewed.

  • This paper presents a discussion of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when applied for the analysis of concrete elements reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The purpose of such nonlinear FEA model development is to create a tool that can be used for numerical parametric studies which can be used to extend the existing (and limited) experiment database. The presented research focuses on the numerical analyses of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements. FEA of concrete members reinforced with linear elastic brittle reinforcements (like GFRP) presents unique challenges when compared to the analysis of members reinforced with plastic (steel) reinforcements, which are discussed in the paper. Specifically, the behaviour and failure of GFRP reinforced members are strongly influenced by the compressive response of concrete and thus modelling of concrete behaviour is essential for proper analysis. FEA was performed using the commercial software ABAQUS. A damaged-plasticity model was utilized to simulate the concrete behaviour. The influence of tension, compression, dilatancy, mesh, and reinforcement modelling was studied to replicate experimental test data of beams previously tested at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Recommendations for the finite element modelling of beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements are offered. The knowledge gained from this research allows for the development of a rational methodology for modelling GFRP reinforced concrete beams, which subsequently can be used for extensive parametric studies and the formation of informed recommendations to design standards.

  • In spite of various advantages, steel fiber reinforced concrete is still limited in its use due to the insufficient research results on the structural performance and design criteria. This study evaluated the long-term behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs by long-term loading experiments based on the short-term load bearing capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete slabs obtained from previous studies. In this study, long-term loading experiments were carried out on Total four 2-span continuous slab specimens were tested for examining the long-term behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete members. Long-term behavior characteristics of members were evaluated by measuring the long-term deflection, drying shrinkage, the number and width of cracks. Experimental results showed that the instant deflection of the steel fiber reinforced concrete slab is about 50% of the normal reinforced concrete slab. And, it was analyzed that the long-term deflection of the specimen using steel fiber reinforced concrete was about 10~20% lower than that of normal concrete by the long-term deflection over 100 days. In addition, the slab specimen using steel fiber reinforced concrete was evaluated to have just 70% of the number and width of cracks compared with normal concrete specimens.

  • The benefit of reinforced roadbeds, such as roadbed reinforced with slag and roadbed with crushed stone has been known among engineers. In this study, model soil box test is executed to determine optimum roadbed thickness. As a result, a empirical solution for the settlement of reinforced roadbeds was suggested. Furthermore, optimum thickness of reinforced roadbed could be determined based on the settlement characteristic of reinforced roadbed among the several variables.
