  • Background & Objectives: Self-rated health has been widely used to evaluate health status and accepted as a subjective measurement of quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the associations between self-rated health, health promotion behaviors, and mental health factors and suggest the approaches to improve health status among university students. Methods: Two thousand six hundred seventy-seven students who had stayed at dormitories on campus participated in the DU health survey by self-reported questionnaire from April 10 to 14, 2017. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of association of self-rated health with health-related factors among male and female students. Results: 38.6% of the respondents reported good self-rated health. Male and first-year students were more likely to report good self-rated health than female and third-year students. There were significant differences in sex, grade, health problems, BMI, sleeping hours, eating breakfast, consumption of fruits and vegetables, physical activity (regular walking, strength exercise, moderate exercise, vigorous exercise), perceived stress, depression, and suicide thought (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although health promotion programs for university students are essential to support their adaptation to campus life and academic achievement, evidence-based health programs to encourage their participation are still insufficient. Therefore, it should establish a campus-based health policy and develop health promotion programs to increase self-rated health levels and prevent mental health problems for university students.

  • The marketization in North Korea is spreading rapidly. This study proposes forest rehabilitation strategy for North Korea in light of their major shift toward market economy. This current trend of marketization in North Korea is now affecting the forest sector, especially the way the residents utilize small forest land. For analyzing the influence of marketization on forest management in North Korea, we reviewed the official documents issued by North Korea and related materials of North Korean marketization. The government of Kim Jong Eun has set up policies and systems regarding the spread of marketization, such as guaranteeing individuals a right to dispose certain products on their own and establishing a special economic zone to attract foreign investments. In the forestry sector, the North Korean government has been trying to fully implement its forest restoration plan by carrying out measures like re-claiming of sloping lands that had been previously used by residents. However, as marketization progresses, it is expected that there lies much difficulty in government-led massive mobilization for forest restoration due to the increase of illegal logging to meet high demand for timber, illegal firewood harvesting, collecting non-timber products for livelihoods and illegal crop cultivation to sell in the market. Therefore, South Korea's support for forest restoration should also consider the recent marketization phenomenon in North Korea. It is necessary to formulate strategic measures such as conducting joint commercialization project on agroforestry management using cooperative farming unit, helping to improve income source from small forest lands, and to activate a comprehensive mountain village special economic zone by utilizing forest business. We do hope that our proposed forest rehabilitation strategy in this paper regarding the changes in North Korea's marketization and forest policy can give a meaningful suggestion on supporting forest restoration in North Korea in an effective way.

  • The purpose of this study was to draw policy implications for the development and expansion of Korea's forest ODA through investigating the perceptions of stakeholder on the fields that contributed the development of forestry in Korea and would have competitiveness in developing countries and priority fields for Korea's forest ODA. For this, the survey was conducted for 248 subjects from the general and expert stakeholder groups. Chi-square test in cross analysis, independent sample t-test, ANOVA and Duncan test were conducted to compare the difference of perceptions by group. The whole general and expert groups consider that 'forest conservation and rehabilitation' contributed to the development of Korea's forestry most and consider its global competitiveness most high. Comparing expert groups, ODA experts evaluated the competitiveness of 'capacity building for policies, institutions and research' higher than the forestry experts. For priority fields of Korea's forest ODA, general groups perceived 'management of CERs' and 'conservation of biodiversity' most important, showing the clear difference in perception compared to that of experts. In Conclusion, for the effective forest ODA of Korea, the effort to fill the gap between the general and expert groups needs to be made, as well as developing forestry capacity building programs to cope with the fields such as climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation, which is newly required in a global society, in addition to using the past experience of forest rehabilitation in Korea. It will be useful for the rehabilitation of North Korea's forest in the future.

  • Analysing the reports of disaster-related, average annual death of lives due to the meteorological disasters amounted to be 250, of which about 90 were due to landslide. According to the last 10-year reports, the average area of landslide occurred reaches 275 hectares per year in Korea. The total cost for rehabilitation could annually require more than about 2 billion Won (about US$ 2.5 million). The basic countermeasure policy against such heavy disasters should be definitely taken on prevention rather than rehabilitation after being damaged. However, prevention countermeasures against landslide-related disasters have not been strengthened in Korea although being important. Areas of high landslide hazard must be designated with increase in number from current 10 (35 cities and counties) to 17 (68 cities and counties included : Table 3). Number of regional Erosion Control Stations taking full charge of rehabilitating works on the damaged land resulted from landslide disaster has to increase from currently 15 stations to 25. The stone buttressed terrace structures on the hillside slopes, being typical erosion control measures in Korea have been recently recognized as one of the most effective rehabilitation measures for the land damaged by landslides.

  • The purposes of this study are to examine the correlations among mental health and quality of life in stroke patients and find the factors affecting quality of life. The participants were 224 inpatients diagnosed with stroke. The Stroke Specific Quality of Life(SS-QOL) was used for measuring Quality of life and the Symptom Check-List-90-Revised(SCL-90-R) was utilized to measure mental health. The relationships among the variables were examined with Pearson correlation coefficients. And the simple regression analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis were performed to identify the predictive variables that explain changes of quality of life. There were statistically significant correlations between quality of life and mental health. Mental health was identified as a factor that explains 28% of change in quality of life. And depression was identified as a factor that explains 42% of change in quality of life. The quality of life in stroke patients, the depression was negatively related with it. When working with a stroke patient, an occupational therapist needs to address mental health aspects from the beginning of the rehabilitation process for a holistic approach and optimal outcome.

  • To investigate the effects of self-management programs for chronic low back pain (LBP), 63 subjects were assigned to three groups; self-exercise group (SEG), hot pack and low-frequency electrical stimulation group (HEG), and thermo-massage group (TMG). Parameters were the pain numeric rating scale (PNRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) and Relapse frequency (RF). PNRS, ODI and RMDQ of SEG and TMG sustained effectiveness, however, PNRS, which improved after treatment in HEG, worsened in 6 month. Between the groups, all parameters were better in SEG and TMG compare to HEG. Exercise and thermo-massage can be considered as useful self-management performed at home to prevent the relapse of chronic LBP.

  • According to the 2017 national survey of the disabled persons conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, rehabilitation centers for the disabled appeared to be the service agency that disabled women use the most. This means that rehabilitation centers for the disabled hold an important role in securing the maternity rights of disabled women. However, in the practice of welfare for the disabled, programs for securing maternity rights are inadequate, and the actual condition is not being surveyed. As a result, programs related to maternity rights based on the legal basis exist, but actual support services for resolving the difficulties related to maternity rights that disabled women experience are inadequate. Thus, the study suggests that rehabilitation centers for the disabled should pay a central role in establishing the maternity rights of disabled women and provide support services such as developing a manual on basic information about pregnancy, childbirth, and child rearing, offering childbirth-related counseling, activating a self-help group, providing an individualized program for families, connecting with medical institutions, and supporting case management.

  • Purpose: The construction history of domestic port facilities has been more than 100 years, and until recently, modern facilities have been continuously built and expanded. However, it is not easy to keep the required performance conditions at the time of initial construction due to changes in the marine environment and increase in volume. In particular, in the case of harbor structures that have a long service life, safety performance and function management are becoming very important due to the increase in the size of ships, the increasing frequency of use, and the increase in the scale of natural disasters. Method: Therefore, this study investigates the state change by structural type of port facilities and analyzes the rehabilitation activities and the history that contribute to the performance improvement and life extension activities. Result: Through this, we distinguished between performance improvement cost (CAPEX) and repair maintenance activity (OPEX) that can be used to establish port facility maintenance strategy, and suggested cost model that can be used to establish maintenance strategy. Conclusion: These studies are expected to contribute greatly to mid- to long-term investment decisions.
