  • In structural reliability analysis, the response surface method is widely adopted because of its numerical efficiency. It should be understood that the response function must approximate the actual limit state function accurately in the main region influencing failure probability where it is evaluated. However, the size of main region influencing failure probability was not defined clearly in current response surface methods. In this study, the concept of sub-region of interest is constructed, and an improved response surface method is proposed based on the sub-region of interest. The sub-region of interest can clearly define the size of main region influencing failure probability, so that the accuracy of the evaluation of failure probability is increased. Some examples are introduced to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method for both numerical and implicit limit state functions.

  • Based on the variation of strain along the cross section, any region in a structural member can be classified into two regions namely, Bernoulli's region (B-region) and Disturbed region (D-region). Since the variation of strain along the cross section for a B-region is linear, well-developed theories are available for their analysis and design. On the other hand, the design of D-region is carried out based on thumb rules and past experience due to the presence of nonlinear strain distribution. Strut-and-Tie method is a novel approach that can be used for the analysis and design of both B-region as well as D-region with equal importance. The strut efficiency factor (${\beta}_s$) is needed for the design and analysis of concrete members using Strut and Tie method. In this paper, equations for finding ${\beta}_s$ for bottle shaped struts in concrete deep beams (a D-region) with and without steel fibres are developed. The effects of transverse reinforcement on ${\beta}_s$ are also considered. Numerical studies using commercially available finite element software along with limited amount of experimental studies were used to find ${\beta}_s$.

  • Welded joint often contains soft or softened regions such as the HAZ of TMCP steel welded with high heat input. In this study, the equivalent yield strength of plate structure containing softened region was predicted by FEM analysis, and its incremental behavior was explained with the results of the analysis. The calculated results of yield strength indicated the following for the plate structures. 1) As the softened region starts to yield, shear stress begins to build up along the boundary between base metal and softened region. This results in multi-axial stress condition which gives restraint on the softened region. 2) Restraint effect has a significant influence on the distribution of the shear stress, the nominal stress, and the strain. 3) The yielding behavior of softened region becomes the same as that of base metal when both ratios of length to width and thickness to width of softened region are larger than 30 and 13 respectively.

  • Traversable region detection is an essential step for advanced driver assistance systems and self-driving car systems, and it has been conducted by detecting lanes from input images. The performance can be unreliable, however, when the light condition is poor or there exist no lanes on the roads. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an algorithm which utilizes the information about the number of lanes and texture analysis. The proposed algorithm first specifies road region candidates by utilizing the number of lanes information. Among road region candidates, the road region is determined as the region in which texture is homogeneous and texture discontinuities occur around its boundaries. Traversable region is finally detected by dividing the estimated road region with the number of lanes information. This paper combines the proposed algorithm with a lane detection-based method to construct a system, and simulation results show that the system detects traversable region even on the road with poor light conditions or no lanes.

  • Terrain height variance spectra for the Korean mountain region are calculated in order to determine an adequate grid size required to resolve terrain forcing on mesoscale model simulation. One-dimensional spectral analysis is applied to specifically the central-eastern part of the Korean mountain region, where topographical-scale forcing has an important effect on mesoscale atmospheric flow. It is found that the terrain height variance spectra in this mountain region has a wavelength dependence with the power law exponents of 1.5 at the wavelength near 30 km, but this dependence is steeply changed to 2.5 at the wavelength less than 30 km. For the adequate horizontal grid size selection on mesoscale simulation two-dimensional terrain height spectral analysis is also performed. There is no directionality within 50% of spectral energy region, so one-dimensional spectral analysis can be reasonably applied to the Korea Peninsula. According to the spectral analysis of terrain height variance, the finer grid size which is higher than 6 km is required to resolve a 90% of terrain variance in this region. Numerical simulation using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting Model) was performed to evaluate the effect of different terrain resolution in accordance with the result of spectral analysis. The simulated results were quantitatively compared to observations and there was a significant improvement in the wind prediction across the mountain region as the grid space decreased from 18 km to 2 km. The results will provide useful guidance of grid size selection on mesoscale topographical simulation over the Korean mountain region.

  • Document image layout analysis contains the process to segment document image into detailed regions and the process to classify the segmented regions into text, picture, table or etc. In the region classification process, the size of a region, the density of black pixels, and the complexity of pixel distribution are the bases of region classification. But in case of picture, the ranges of these bases are so wide that it's difficult to decide the classification threshold between picture and others. As a result, the picture has a higher region classification error than others. In this paper, we propose document image layout analysis method which has a better performance for the picture and text region classification than that of previous methods including commercial softwares. In the picture and text region classification, median filter is used in order to reduce the influence of the size of a region, the density of black pixels, and the complexity of pixel distribution. Futhermore the classification error is corrected by the use of region expanding filter and constrained conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose a face region detection/verification method using wavelet packet analysis and structural statistic for frontal human color image. The method extracts skin color lesions from input images, first. and then applies spatial restrictive conditions to the region, and determines whether the region is face candidate region or not. In second step, we find eye region in the face candidate region using structural statistic for standard korean faces. And in last step, the face region is verified via wavelet packet analysis if the face torture were satisfied to normal texture conditions.
