Some Proposed Indices of Structural Regeneration of Secondary Forests and Their Relation to Soil Properties

  • Studies that relate the structure of tropical regrowth vegetation to soil properties are generally lacking in the literature. This study proposes three indices for assessing the structural regeneration of secondary forests. They are: (1) the tree diameter class, (2) the plant life form and (3) the woody/herbaceous plants ratio indices. They were applied to assess the regeneration status of forest regrowth vegetation (aged 1-10 years), derived savanna regrowth vegetation in south western Nigeria, and to secondary forests in different stages of succession in Columbia and Venezuela, Bolivia, Mexico in South and Central America and semi-arid savanna in Ethiopia and seasonal deciduous forest successional stages in India. In all the cases, the indices increased with increasing age of regrowth vegetation and hence, with increasing structural complexity of regenerating vegetation. The tree diameter class index increased from 32.1% in a 9-year secondary forest to 69.0% in an 80-year-old secondary forest in Columbia and Venezuela and from 0.4% in a 1-year fallow to 20.9% in 10-year regrowth vegetation in southwestern Nigeria. In semi-arid savanna in northern Ethiopia, the woody/herbaceous plants ratio index increased from 18.1% in a 5-year protected grazing enclosure to 75.1% in 15-year protected enclosure, relative to the status of 20-year enclosure. The indices generally had correlations of 0.6-0.90 with species richness and Simpson's/Margalef's species diversity, implying that they are appropriate measures of ecosystem development over time. The proposed indices also had strong and positive correlations with soil organic carbon and nutrients. They are therefore, significant indicators of fertility status.

  • 본 연구는 노후주거지의 근린재생 정책 및 새로운 계획방향이 요구되는 시점에서, 이를 앞서 진행하고 있는 독일, 베를린의 근린재생프로그램(QM)을 분석하고, 시사점을 도출하는데 목적이 있다. 향후 국내 노후 저층주거지의 근린재생 정책을 수립하는데 도움이 되기 위함이다. 따라서 독일의 지역재생 정책과 현황을 고찰한 후, QM프로그램의 전략, 자금지원 및 활용계획, 프로그램 적용지역, 지역선정 기준 등에 대해 분석하였다. 또한 유형별 특징을 분석한 후 국내 주거지 재생과 관련된 주요 사례를 분석하였다. 현지조사, 면담 및 이론연구가 병행되었다.

  • Purpose : The aim of this studγ was to evaluate the patient's and dentist's perspective and knowledge on rapid human immunodeficiency virus screening test in dental setting. Material and Methods: In March 2009, 100 patients and 100 dentists at College of Dentistry, Yonsei University were provided an attitude assessment survey. Results : Results were analyzed for acceptance of testing and potential barriers. 94% of patients agreed to take a rapid HIV screening test and 77% of dentists were willing to provide the test to their patients. Also the current knowledge state of patients and dentists on HIV infection was not accurate as expected. Conclusion : Overall, dental clinic patients widely accepted the offer of rapid oral HIV screening. Rapid HIV screening test in the dental setting ran be an important option to increase the number of individuals who know their HIV status.

중간지원조직으로서 도시재생지원센터의 역할과 운영 방안 - 충청북도 사례를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Roles and Efficient Operations of Urban Regeneration Support Center as Intermediary Organization - Focused on the Chungcheongbuk-do -)

  • 최근 도시재생사업을 실질적으로 추진하는 도시재생지원센터에 대한 논의가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 그 이유는 역할과 권한이 명확하지 않고, 각 지자체 센터별 운영 경험이 축적되지 않아 많은 시행착오와 부작용이 따르고 있기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구는 충북지역 도시재생지원센터를 대상으로 운영 현황을 분석하여, 향후 바람직한 도시재생지원센터의 운영 방안을 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 기초현황과 설문조사 자료를 활용하였으며, 특히 관계자 심층면담을 통한 현장중심의 연구를 수행하였다. 충북지역 도시재생지원센터는 첫째, 광역센터·기초센터·현장센터간 역할 및 업무분담이 명확하지 않다는 점, 둘째, 센터 운영 방식의 한계와 운영 자율성 및 독립성이 확보되지 않은 점. 셋째, 도시재생 참여주체로써 행정에 비해 상대적으로 매우 낮은 권한과 위상을 갖고 있다는 점. 넷째, 도시재생 관련 전문 인력 확보 부족과 직원 고용의 불안전성이 전반적인 문제점으로 도출되었다. 따라서, 향후 도시재생사업이 더욱 체계적이고 효율적으로 추진되기 위해서는 우선 현장의 목소리에 귀를 기울여 각 지역마다 실제적 여건이 반영될 수 있는 안정적인 운영시스템 구축이 반드시 필요할 것으로 보인다.

  • In the respect of energy saving and reusing, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gases emission and to enhance the operation efficiency in electric railway system. Recently, as the power electronics technologies are advanced, some countries have focused on the regenerative inverter to use regeneration energy on each line. When the electric tractions are stopped or slowed down, it is useful to supply the surplus energy to the power source by regenerative system, which increases its energy efficiency. Also, the generated energy can be supply to other tractions or equipments inside traction. Thus, it may help reduce construction cost of additional power plants. The purpose of this study is to describe the development status of the regenerative inverter system which suppress extra DC-line voltage and regenerate the energy instead of using a resister.

  • This study aims to reconsider public architecture as effective resources for the local regeneration and draws a couple of issues based on analysis of planning status and cases from the perspectives of local regeneration. Through the analysis, this study suggests following as ways of improvement of public architecture planning: first, in order to secure systematic management of local regeneration, it is necessary to build up a dedicated organization or collaboration system that organically links and manages public facilities. Also related criteria that include the feasibility study, preliminary examination system, conduct review of investment and review standards need to be supplemented. Second, it is necessary to establish an integrated plan including the periphery of public architecture in the aspect of integrated urban planning, and to set up a selection of location standard that supports public architecture be a local center. Lastly, to activate local communities, the study proposes diversification of ways of combining programs and a process for participation and operating funds.

도서지역의 생태문화적 재생 요소에 대한 중요도 분석 (The Importance Analysis of Experts on Eco-Cultural Regeneration Index in Island Regions)

  • 본 연구는 도서지역에 도입 가능한 생태 문화적 재생 요소를 도출하여 전문가를 대상으로 중요도 인식조사를 실시하였다. 먼저, 도서지역의 현황과 개발 동향, 농어촌 마을 및 생태 해양도시를 기초로 하여 도서지역에 적합한 생태문화적 재생 요소를 도출하였다. 생태적 재생 요소에는 토지이용, 교통체계, 건축물, 자원순환으로 분류하고, 문화적 재생 요소에는 보존 및 보전, 관광자원화, 기반시설로 분류하였다. 직업분야(학계, 공공기관, 민간회사), 전공분야(도서 해양, 문화 관광, 생태 환경, 도시계획)로 나누어서 살펴보았다. 차이분석은 일원배치 분산분석(One-way ANOVA)을 실시하여 도서지역의 생태문화적 재생 요소에 대한 전문가 집단간 중요도 인식을 비교하였다. 토지이용부문은 학계와 공공기관 간 충분한 협의가 있어야 하고, 전문가들은 생태문화자원의 보존을 통해 도서지역이 활성화 될 수 있음을 인식하고 있다.

Current Status and Potentiality of Forest Resources in a Proposed Biodiversity Conservation Area of Bangladesh

  • An exploratory study was conducted in Juri Forest Range-2, a proposed biodiversity conservation area of Bangladesh to explore the present growing stock of tree, regeneration condition and status of non-timber forest products (NTFPs). This conservation area contains both natural and artificial plantation was selected by using multistage random sampling method. For determination of plot size and sampling methods, the quadrate size ($10m{\times}10m$) for tree stock measurement, ($2m{\times}2m$) for regeneration survey, ($20m{\times}20m$) for NTFPs survey was determined. Regarding tree stock survey, 14 species under eight families were found where Tectona grandis shows average number of stem/ha was 624 and basal area/ha was (10.36 $m^2/ha$) followed by Acacia auriculiformis (0.2 $m^2/ha$ and 637 stem/ha), Gmelina arborea (0.2 $m^2/ha$ and 600 stem/ha). In regeneration survey, 14 species were found belonging to 9 families where Alstonia scholaris shows highest (3,750) seedling per hectare. Regarding NTFPs, bamboo and cane are the most common resources. In last ten years, the total timber output was 1,28,596.14 cubic feet and total amount of revenue was 4,64,434 US$. The vacant area is 1,335.5 acre which contains 14% of total area. If this vacant area is planted with suitable species and take proper steps for appropriate management of this species it will be a good biologically diversified area.

Population structure and regeneration of Himalayan endemic Larix species in three high-altitude valleys in Nepal Himalaya

  • Background: The Himalayan forests are of great importance to sustain the nature and community resource demands. These forests are facing pressures both from anthropogenic activities and ongoing global climatic changes. Poor natural regeneration has been considered a major problem in mountainous forests. To understand the population structure and regeneration status of Larix (Larix griffithiana and Larix himalaica), we conducted systematic vegetation surveys in three high-altitude valleys namely Ghunsa (Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, KCA), Langtang (Langtang National Park, LNP), and Tsum (Manaslu Conservation Area, MCA) in Nepal Himalaya. The average values of diameter at breast height (DBH), height, and sapling height were compared for three sites and two species using Kruskal-Wallis test. Population structure was assessed in terms of proportion of seedlings, saplings, and trees. Regeneration was analyzed using graphical representation of frequencies of seedlings, saplings, and trees in histograms. Results: The results showed that the population structure of Larix in terms of the proportion of seedling, sapling, and tree varied greatly in the three study areas. KCA had the highest record of seedling, sapling, and tree compared to other two sites. Seedlings were the least among three forms and many plots were without seedlings. We found no seedling in MCA study plots. The plot level average DBH variation among sites was significant (Kruskal-Wallis χ2 = 7.813, df = 2, p = 0.02) as was between species (Kruskal-Wallis χ2 = 5.9829, df = 1, p = 0.014). Similarly, the variation in average tree height was significant (Kruskal-Wallis χ2 = 134.23, df = 2, p < 0.001) among sites as well as between species (Kruskal-Wallis χ2 = 128.01, df = 1, p < 0.001). All the sites showed reverse J-shaped curve but more pronounced for KCA and MCA. In comparing the two species, Larix griffithiana has clear reverse J-shaped diameter distribution but not Larix himalaica. Conclusion: The varied responses of Larix manifested through regeneration status from spatially distinct areas show that regeneration limitations might be more pronounced in the future. In all the three studied valleys, regeneration of Larix is found to be problematic and specifically for Larix griffithiana in MCA and Larix himalaica in LNP. To address the issues of disturbances, especially serious in LNP, management interventions are recommended to sustain the unique Himalayan endemic conifer.

도시재생사업에서 핵심사업의 추진 현황과 과제 -중심시가지형 사업 추진 사례를 중심으로- (A Study on the Current Status and Challenge of Core Project in Urban Regeneration -Focused on the Type of Central Commercial District-)

  • 도시재생사업에서 핵심사업은 사업 대상지의 성격을 규정할 뿐 아니라, 사업비가 가장 많이 투입되고 사업 추진을 견인하는 역할을 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 도시재생사업의 마중물 역할로써, 도시재생 핵심사업의 사업추진 현황과 특징을 검토하고, 문제점을 분석하여 향후 원활한 도시재생사업 추진을 위한 방향을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 연구의 대상은 충청권 지역의 중심시가지형 도시재생사업을 주요 사례로 선정하여 진행하였다. 이에 마중물 사업비를 기준으로 전체 사업비의 약 10% 이상을 차지하는 사업을 도시재생 핵심사업으로 도출하였다. 연구결과, 5개 사례 대상지의 경우 전체 37개 단위사업 중 14개가 핵심사업으로 도출되었다. 해당 사례별 핵심사업은 주로 사업 규모가 큰 물리적 시설 조성 사업 위주로 구성되고 있었는데, 공통적 특징으로 대규모 복합거점공간의 확보와 주차장 조성이 핵심사업을 이루고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 마중물 사업비 기준으로 볼 때, 전체 사업비 대비 핵심사업의 구성비는 약 80% 내외를 차지하였으며, 연계사업간 사업비의 경우 공공투자와 민간투자 부문에서 사례 지역 모두 상대적으로 연계가 미흡한 것으로 분석되었다.
