Program Development for Detecting Charged Refrigerant Amount in System Air-Conditioner using Fuzzy Algorithm (퍼지 알고리즘을 이용한 시스템 에어컨의 냉매충전량 감지 프로그램 개발)

  • This study developed a program for detecting charged refrigerant amount in system air-conditioner. System air-conditioner is an air-conditioning system with multiple indoor units. Due to the complexity of the system, it is more difficult to detect the refrigerant amount charged in the system air-conditioner than in a general single air-conditioner. Experiments were performed for a 6 HP outdoor unit with 3 indoor units in a psychrometric calorimeter. The experimental amount of the charged refrigerant was ranged from $60\%\;to\;140\%\;with\;10\%$ increasement. Fuzzy algorithm was employed for detecting the charged refrigerant amount in the system air-conditioner. The experimental data were used for curve-fitting for the general ranges of indoor and outdoor temperature conditions. Membership function was determined for the whole ranges of experimentally measured data and rule-bases were defined for each charged refrigerant amount. Developed program successfully predicted the measured data within $10\%$ resolution range.

  • Natural gas liquefaction process which is operated under cryogenic condition spends large amount of energy. Most of energy in the natural gas liquefaction process is consumed by compressors. Therefore, minimizing energy consumption of compressors is an important issue in process design and operation. Among various natural gas liquefaction processes, propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant (C3MR) process consists of mixed refrigerant system and pure refrigerant system. In this study, to find the optimal design of pure refrigerant system, pure refrigerant cycle is simulated on different number of pressure levels and the necessary energy of each design is compared. After that, the driver selection model is applied to analyse each processes, which has different number of equipments, in terms of cost. As the result, the design using many equipments spends lower energy. Using this result, this study suggests standard of process design selection by the cost term.

Forced Convective Evaporating Heat Transfer of Non-azeotropic Refrigerant Mixtures in a Horizontal Smoothed Tube (수평 평활관내에서 비공비혼합냉매의 강제대류 증발열전달)

  • Experiments were performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of nonazeotropic mixture R-22+R-114 in a heat pump system. The ranges of parameter, such as heat flux, mass flow rate, and quality were $8,141{\sim}32,564W/m^2$, 24~58kg/h, and 0~1, respectively. The overall compositions of the mixtures were 50 and 100 per-cent of R-22 by weight for R-22+R-114 mixture. The results indicated that there were distinct different heat transfer phenomena between the pure substance and the mixture. In case of pure refrigerant the heat transfer rates for cooling were strongly dependent upon quality of the refrigerant. Overall evaporating heat transfer coefficients for the mixture were somewhat lower than pure R-22 values in the forced convective boiling region. For a given flow rate, the heat transfer coefficient at the circumferential tube wall(top, side, and bottom of the test tube) for R-22/R-114(50/50wt%)mixture, however, was higher than for pure R-22 at side and bottom of the tube. Furthermore, a prediction for the evaporating heat transfer coefficient of the mixtures was developed based on the method of Yoshida et.al.'s. The resulting correlation yielded a good agreement with the data for the refrigerant mixtures.

Comparison of Condenser Characteristics using R410A and R22 under the Same Inlet Temperature Condition (동일한 유입온도조건에서 R410A와 R22 적용 응축기의 특성비교)

  • R410A is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R410A flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and refrigerant mass flux varying from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s for refrigerant side. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature of 35$^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 16% is needed for R410A than that of R22 for subcooling temperature of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted in air-side pressure drop decrease of 15% for R410A as compared to R22. As a consequence, in order to provide the same design condition of a condenser, the fan requires lower electric-power consumption with R410A than that with R22.

  • It is time to prepare the phaseout of R134a, the current refrigerant, in automotive air conditioning system because the EC deadline has been coming with new platform vehicles in 2011 and all vehicles by 2017. Until now a high-pressure carbon dioxide($CO_2$) system is the leading replacement of R134a in European auto-makers but there is no firm agreement in the world automotive market. Recently three new fluids have been announced as the possibilities from Honeywell, DuPont and INEOS Fluor. The new alternative refrigerant should meet the requirements like non flammable, non toxic, no ozone depletion effect and low GWP(under 150 to meet EC regulation). The objectives of this paper are to review the fluid H from Honeywell, the more possible alternative refrigerant in 3 new fluids, compare the properties of R134a & fluid H and see the possibility as a replacement of R134a. In this experimental paper we ran and reviewed the cooling performance data in the bench system, the vehicle and the field test. We found the possibility of fluid H system to meet the R134a system performance with some hardware modifications but agreed that it is still needed to study about the long term safety, environmental effects, material compatibilities and so on.

A Study on the DSM Effect of a Refrigerant-Subcooling Refrigeration System with an Ice Storage Tank (축열조를 이용한 냉매과냉각 시스템의 전력수요관리 효과에 대한 연구)

  • This study was experimentally performed to find the effects of refrigerant subcooling in the refrigeration system and to propose how to get the efficient use of energy. A refrigerant-subcooling refrigeration system consisted of a typical single vapor-compression refrigeration cycle, a subcooler, and an ice storage tank. The degree of subcooling at the exit of the condenser can be increased by the heat transfer between the subcooler and the ice storage tank. The cold heat in the ice storage tank was stored by using the refrigeration cycle during night time and then used to absorb the heat from the subcooler during daytime. The cooling capacity and COP of this system were higher than those of the conventional system due to the increase in the degree of subcooling. Typically, the refrigerant-subcooling system showed superior performance to the conventional refrigeration system and would also contribute to load leveling.

  • This research is focused on the experimental study of the noise induced by two-phase refrigerant flow in the evaporator. The two-phase flow in the evaporator has various flow patterns. The effects of two-phase flow pattern's characteristics on the noise of the evaporator are investigated experimentally. The experimental data shows that the generated noise is mainly related to the layout of the pipe and the certain two-phase flow patterns such as the churn and slug flow. Based on these results, we removed the unnecessary vertical pipe and changed the pipe diameter of the evaporator - inlet into small one in order to avoid the intermittent flow condition. The noise level of newly-designed inlet-pipe of the evaporator was measured experimentally by refrigerant-supplying equipment and compared with that of conventional one.

Correlation of Convective Boiling Heat Transfer in a Horizontal Tube for Pure Refrigerants and Refrigerant Mixtures (순수 및 혼합냉매의 유동증발 열전달 상관식)

  • Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants(R22, R32, R125, R134a, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures(R32/R134a and R290/R600a) are measured experimentally and compared with several correlations. Convective boiling term of Chen's correlation predicts experimental data for pure refrigerants fairly well(root-mean-square error of 12.1% for the quality range over 0.2). An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer of refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to study degradation of heat transfer. Annular flow is the subject of this analysis because a great portion of the evaporator in refrigeration or air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor phases, which is considered as a driving force for mass transfer at interface, is included in this analysis. Correction factor $C_F$ is introduced to the correlation for the pure substances through annular flow analysis to apply the correlation to the mixtures. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the correlation considering nucleate boilling effect in the low quality region and mass transfer effect for nonzazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

A Study on Cooling Characteristics of Ground Source Heat Pump with Variation of Water Switching and Refrigerant Switching Methods (수절환 및 냉매절환방식에 따른 지열히트펌프의 냉방특성에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the cooling performance for a water-to-water 10 RT ground source heat pump by using the water switching and refrigerant switching method. The test of water-to-water ground source heat pump was measured by varying the compressor speed, load side inlet temperature, and ground heat source side temperature. The cooling capacity and refrigerant mass flow rate of the heat pump increased with increasing ground heat source temperature. But COP of the heat pump decreased with increasing ground heat source temperature. As a result, the water switching method with counter flow, compared to a refrigerant switching method, improves the cooling capacity and COP by approximately 6~9% in average, respectively.
