  • In cases of a patient referral, the general dentist should communicate the patient's dental information as clearly as possible to the specialist to whom he/she is referring his/her patient. For this reason, it is necessary to write a referral letter in an accurate and complete manner. The purpose of this study is to analyze the referral letters of patients who are referred to the department of conservative dentistry in a dental university hospital. From January, 2017 to December, 2018, we gathered the information of the patients who were referred to the department of conservative dentistry in a dental university hospital with referral letter. We evaluated the fidelity of a total of 750 referral letters and recorded the information of the referral dentist and the dental clinic. The relationship between each item and fidelity was analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. The analysis of the contents of the referral letters yielded the following results: The fidelity of the referral letter was higher when the patient was referred during the root canal treatment, or when there was a root canal filling or when there was pain during chewing. The fidelity of referral letter was low in cases where the referring clinic is close to and has cooperative relationship with dental university hospital. Among the factors affecting the fidelity, the year of graduation of the referral dentist was the most influential. This study confirmed the fact that the clinical practice of writing patient referral letters still leaves much to be desired. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to create more clear and standardized guidelines for writing referral letters.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of patients and teeth referred to a university dental hospital for endodontic problem. Materials and Methods: From January, 2017 to December, 2018, patients who were referred to a university dental hospital for endodontic problem were collected from clinical records. A total of 1171 patient records were analyzed. The status of the referred teeth was divided into three groups according to whether they were treated endodontically based on radiographs and clinical records at the time of referred visit. Results: 69.9% of the referred teeth were maxillary and mandibular first and second molars. The average time from referral to actual visit is 9.03 days and 65.6% of the case referred with referring letter. The most primary reasons of referral were persistent clinical symptom (pain, swelling, and sinus tract) (37.9%), diagnosis difficulty (16.7%), blockage of canal space (13.8%) and difficult tooth anatomy (11.4%). In the case of referral before endodontic treatment, the most primary reason of referral was failure to make a proper diagnosis. If the teeth were referred in the middle of endodontic treatment, the most primary reason of referral was persistent clinical symptom and blockage of canal space. In the case of referral after root canal filling, the most primary reason of referral was persistent clinical symptom. Conclusion: In the case of molars, the rate of persistent clinical symptom and blockage of canal space were the most primary reason of referral, and the rate of apical surgery and management of trauma was high in the case of anterior teeth.

Korean Characteristics of OkJoongHwa and J. S. Gale's Translation Practices in "Choon Yang" (『옥중화(獄中花)』의 한국적 고유성과 게일의 번역 실천 - J. S. Gale, "Choon Yang"(The Korea Magazine 1917.9~1918.8)의 번역용례를 중심으로)

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate translated individual words in J. S. Gale's "Choon Yang" in comparison with its original OkJoongHwa("獄中花") while referring to early modern bilingual dictionaries and missionaries' ethnography. Gale faced a lot of translation difficulties because the source text had a very different cultural system from the object text. OkJoongHwa was a Korean pansori novel which meant it included many Korean characteristics. However, Gale considered its Korean characteristics were deeply connected with Chinese classics. Even famous people and place names cited from the Chinese classics in OkJoongHwa represented the Korean thinking. Gale tried to faithfully translate the source text as much as possible whether the words were Chinese or Korean. In this paper, we deal with mostly various translation aspects of the Chinese-letter words in OkJoongHwa. Gale's first method to translate words made of Chinese Character is transliteration, the examples of which are the name of Chinese famous people and places, and Chinese poems. The second method is to parallel transliteration and English interpretation equivalent to the Chinese Character. The examples are the names of main characters like "Spring Fragrance or Choonyang," "Mongyong, or Dream-Dragon" and in his translation of word play in Osa (Commissioner), or Kamsa (Governor), kaiksa (a dead beggar). The third is literal translation of Chinese idiomatic phrases as Gale translated 侵魚落雁 into "She'd make the fishes to sink and the wild-geese to drop from the sky." The fourth is a little free translation of the title of public office, the various names of Korean yamen servants and the unique Korean clothing and ornaments. We expect Gale's many translation difficulties as we can see the translated long list of yamen clerks and Korean clothing and ornaments. After our investigation of his translation practices in "Choon Yang" we conclude that he tried to translate its literary language very faithfully though he could not avoid inevitable loss caused by the cultural difference involved in two languages. Gale's "Choon Yang" contributed to introducing the uniqueness of the classical Korean novel and Korean culture to the world more than any other English translation works of that time through his faithful translation.

  • This study analyzed five official entries in the 3rd Cheong Kong Festival contest and analyzed the patterns of teen audience empathy. The tools used for this analysis were 'characters, acting, background and theme'. Firstly, characters were mostly teenagers and out-of-school teenagers, but there were other performances that focused on the relationship between teenagers and adults or focused on the youth, which the teen audience preferred. And they preferred realism acting to emotional acting and preferred musical acting to realism acting. In addition, the background of the events covered in the performance was evaluated to be like this: the closer the audience was to the youth, the higher the audience sympathized with the performance, and the closer the subject matter was to the youth's interest, the more positive it received. In summing up the opinions of the youth evaluation team, the first audience-participating Sinpa Theater, "Mr. X" was evaluated to expand the scope of teenagers to 20s and to show the negative and heavy reality as fun and beneficial one. Secondly, when it comes to non-prejudiced youth theatre "The Turtle", which have a high level of empathy, it was evaluated to shape the prejudice about others through the symbol of 'bag'. Thirdly, regarding the time-traveling retro-style youth theatre of the 'a jam-packed Bus', it was evaluated to be a well-made retro-style youth theatre. Regarding the 'Lunar Eclipse', which showed the aesthetic of the relationship, scenes were evaluated to be built with omission and restraint. Regarding "B Officer on and Love Letter", it was evaluated to be adapted to a musical from Hyun Jingun's novel, which was released 100 years ago. Lastly, the performance desired by the youth evaluation team was a performance with a high level of 'sympathy' and 'education'. In other words, they preferred performances that empathize with the emotions and thoughts of teenagers, and on the other hand, they wanted to see performances that allowed them to see the world broadly outside their own worlds. If youth theater is created by referring to the evaluation of youth as it is in this study, the audience will be more sympathetic to performances.
