  • This study focuses on the relationship between ethnic identity of Asian-Americans and their appreciation of their ethnic body features, based on reference group theory. A convenience sample of 60 male and 52 female students from various Asian ethnicities attending a mid-western university was used for the study. A 2 (gender) by 2 (ethnic identification) by 2 (socializing group) analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on body image satisfaction as dependent variable and Body Mass Index score as a covariate was conducted. A significant main effect of ethnic identification was found, which indicates the more respondents identified with their ethnic group, the more likely they were to be satisfied with their appearance. The social group affiliation main effect was not significant. The impact of ethnic identification was significant only for those respondents who socialize more with Americans than with Asians. The results support the idea that one's ethnic group functions as a reference group, which influences body image appraisals.

  • In this paper, a reference-free perceptual quality metric is proposed for image assessment. It measures the amount of overall blockiness and blurring in the image. And edge-oriented artifacts, such as ringing, mosaic and staircase noise are also considered. In order to give a single quality score, the individual artifact scores are adaptively combined according to the difference between the edge-oriented artifacts and other artifacts. The quality score obtained by the proposed algorithm shows strong correlation with the MOS values by VQEG.

  • In this paper, we propose a motio estiamtion algorithm using low-resolution quantization to reduce the computation of the full search algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of the low-resolution search which determins the candidate motion vectors by comparing the low-resolution image and the full-resolution search which determines the motion vector by comparing the full-resolution image on the positions of the candidate motion vectors. The low-resolution image is generated by subtracting each pixel value in the reference block or the search window by the mean of the reference block, and by quantizing it is 2-bit resolution. The candidate motion vectors are determined by counting the number of pixels in the reference block whose quantized codes are unmatched to those in the search window. Simulation results show that the required computational cost of the proposed algorithm is reduced to 1/12 of the full search algorithm while its performance degradation is 0.03~0.12 dB.

  • We determined the reference axis for the subjective estimation of X-ray images. The used images are the noised image and the noise plus signal image. The used subjective estimation method is the curve of Receiver Operation Characteristic. To determine the evaluation reference axis between the noise image and the image with signal, Fuzzy Logic System is used.

  • This pater presents a new fractal coding scheme to find more optimal transformation using the reference images which I determined by some criteria. After finding the transformations to minimize the distance between the original image and the reference images. we choose one of them which has the best performance. Conventional fractal coding schemes based on the collage theorem obtain the transformation to minimize the distance between an original image and its collage image because of heavy computation. In other words, it is because the optimal transformation and be obtained after the attractors of all the possible transformations are generated and then compared with an original image. As such a procedure is practically difficult to implement. the collage coding schemes using the theorem have widely used, We introduce the new scheme to overcome the complexity problem for the optimal transformation and be obtained, our scheme is evaluated. as compared with the optimal one, In general cases that the optimal one is unavailable. our scheme is also evaluated, as compared with the conventional schemes.

  • Recently, object recognition using image/video signals is rapidly spreading on autonomous driving and mobile phones. However, the actual input image/video signals are easily exposed to a poor illuminance environment. A recent researches for improving illumination enable to estimate and compensate the illumination parameters. In this study, we propose VE-DCE (video enhancement zero-reference deep curve estimation) to improve the illumination of low-light images. The proposed VE-DCE uses unsupervised learning-based zero-reference deep curve, which is one of the latest among learning based estimation techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve the quality of low-light video as well as images compared to the previous method. In addition, it can reduce the computational complexity with respect to the existing method.

  • Hough transform is a representative algorithm for detecting straight lines in an edge image. It corresponds the parameters of straight lines that may occur in the edge pixel into a parameter space, and detects valid parameters satisfying a given condition as straight lines. In general Hough transform, the parameters of the line are calculated with the image origin as the reference point. However, in this paper, the Hough transform based on the image center as a reference point is performed and its performance is compared and analyzed with the conventional Hough transform.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient reference-based compression artifact reduction network for 360-degree images in an equi-rectangular projection (ERP) domain. In our insight, conventional image restoration methods cannot be applied straightforwardly to 360-degree images due to the spherical distortion. To address this problem, we propose an adaptive disparity estimator using a deformable convolution to exploit correlation among 360-degree images. With the help of the proposed convolution, the disparity estimator establishes the spatial correspondence successfully between the ERPs and extract matched textures to be used for image restoration. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides reliable high-quality textures from the reference and improves the quality of the restored image as compared to the state-of-the-art single image restoration methods.

  • This paper presents a highly fast and accurate facial region extraction method by using the skin-color-reference map and motion information. First, we construct the robust skin-color-reference map and eliminate the background in image by this map. Additionally, we use the motion information for accurate and fast detection of facial region in image sequences. Then we further apply region growing in the remaining areas with the aid of proposed criteria. The simulation results show the improvement in execution time and accurate detection.

  • In this study, the notion of payment intention price was introduced and examined in relation with self-image congruence, clothing preference and two types of reference price: expected price and fair price. One hundred samples of female collegiate students participated in the group survey and responded to the instrument including variables of clothing image evaluation, clothing preference, reference price, payment intention price toward a one-piece dress as the stimulus, and ideal self-image perception. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and regressions were applied on data analysis. The results were as follow. Payment intention price was determined by clothing preference and fair price, and the explaining power of fair price was greater than clothing preference. One confirmatory path was observed that self-image congruence effects clothing preference, and then clothing preference effects payment intention price. The other confirmatory path was from expected price to fair price and fair price to payment intention price.
