  • As an analytical approach, the area reduction formula of rubber bearings has been proposed to account for the reduction in bucking load due to shear. The result obtained from the formula is presumed to be conservative but the degree of conservatism is unknown. This paper describes a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of rubber bearings using a finite element analysis program. The results from the finite element analysis which accounts for both the material and geometric non-linearities are compared against the theoretical results in order to examine the validity of the theoretical formulas.

  • According to the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, the rainfall captured ratio which can be estimated by the empirical formula is an important element to estimate reduction loads of non-point pollutants water quality control basin. In this study, the rainfall captured ratio is altered to stormwater captured ratio considering its meaning in the technical guideline of water pollutant load management, and the new empircal formula of stormwater captured ratio is suggested. In order to do this, we calculate stormwater captured ratio by using the hourly rainfall data of seven urban weather stations (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangreung, Seoul, Gwangju, and Jeju) for 43 years. The regression coefficients of the existed empirical formula cannot reflect the catchment properties at all, because they are fixed values regardless of regions. However the empirical formula of stormwater captured ratio has flexible regression coefficients by runoff coefficient(C), so it is allowed to consider the characteristics of runoff in catchment. It is expected that reduction loads of storage based water quality control basin can be more reasonably estimated than before.

  • This paper presents a case study on blasting vibration reduction in NATM(New Australian Tunnelling Method) tunnel construction carried out under a congested residential area. In NATM tunnel constructions, blasting is an essential process, thus vibration phenomenon is inevitable. Therefore, the vibration reduction was tried to avoid expected complaints from the public living in the area. Test blastings were performed to get the constants for an estimation formula of vibration velocity. Then the influence area was approximated using the estimation formula, and construction methods for the vibration reduction were sought based on the results.

  • In this study, ultimate strength of concrete deep beams with an opening is predicted by using Strut-and-Tie Model with a new effective compressive strength. First crack occurs around an opening by stress concentration due to geometric discontinuity. This results in decreasing ultimate strength of deep beams with an opening compared with general deep beams. With fundamental notion that ultimate strength of deep beam with an opening decreases as a result of reduction in effective compressive strength of a concrete strut, an equivalent effective compressive strength formula is proposed in order to reflect ultimate strength reduction due to an opening located in a concrete strut. An equivalent effective compressive strength formula which can reflect opening size and position is added to a testified algorithm of predicting ultimate strength of concrete deep beams. Therefore, ultimate strength of concrete deep beam with an opening is predicted by using a simple and rational STM algorithm including an equivalent effective compressive strength formula, not by finite element analysis or a former complex Strut-and-Tie Model

  • When certain general single or multiple hypergeometric functions were introduced, their reduction formulas have naturally been investigated. Here, in this paper, we aim at presenting a very interesting reduction formula for the Srivastava's triple hypergeometric function $F^{(3)}[x,y,z]$ by applying the so-called Beta integral method to the Henrici's triple product formula for hypergeometric series.

  • A low voltage wire should be used considering that a load used in the end is a low voltage. In regard to these wires, there are needs for research about the wire thickness calculation in accordance with IEC standard because the standardization process for IEC (KS standard) was completed on June 30, 2005, and they stopped producing NEC-standard products by the order from Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under Ministry of Knowledge Economy (former Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) since July 1, 2006. This study compared, in terms of the thickness calculation of low voltage wire, a reduction factor application by IEC standard about allowed current and an application for calculation of voltage drop. It also proposed the formula for IEC standard to decrease errors and resolve the difficulty of standardized calculation by analyzing the difference between simplified formula and standardized formula that are the most frequently used calculation method of voltage drop.

  • To evaluate the effect of low lactose special formula (MF-1) for the treatment of acute diarrhea, we studied thirty nine infants who were admitted with acute diarrhea to the Department of Pediatics, Yeungnam University Hospital. 39 infants of under 6 months of age who had been fed on formula feeds were randomly allocated to receive either a diluted regular formula milk or a low lactose special formula. Each infant received intravenous rehydration during fasting for 6-12 hours. Group 1 (n=15) was fed half strength of regular formula (80-100cc/kg/day) for the first 24 hours, three quarters strength formula (100-120cc/kg/day) for the next 24 hours, and continued feeding with the full strength regular formula milk. Group 2 (n=24), who fed the same amount of milk as Group 1, continued feeding with the full strength low lactose special formula from the start of feeding. Male to female sex ratio was 1.6 to 1. The characteristics of infants on admission were comparable in the age, the duration of diarrhea and the stool frequency before admission, the degree of dehydration. There were no significant differences in the duration of hospitalization, changes in stool weight and stool frequency after admission between two groups.(p>0.05) The Body weight and skin fold thickness were increased in group 2 who fed low lactose formula, but those who fed diluted regular formula showed reduction of body weight and skin fold thickness ($64.2{\pm}51.4g$ vs $-11.4{\pm}52.2g$, $0.6{\pm}0.8mm$ vs $-0.1{\pm}0.3mm$ respectively) during hospitalization. (p<0.05) We conclude that low lactose special formula milk can be recommended instead of diluted regular formula for acute diarrhea treatment in infants.

  • In this study, Matsuda formula used to evaluate the loads acting on the pillar was investigated and load reduction factor(${\alpha}$) was evaluated by numerical analysis to better apply for the design. From the results, normal stress was concentrated to one side due to excavation of preceding tunnel after construction of pillar. And 86.5% of maximum normal stress was revealed partly unequally when the ground was poor. By numerical analysis, $14{\sim}83%$ of total loads calculated by Matsuda formula decreased and then, from these results, load reduction factor(${\alpha}$) was estimated. From now on, stability and economic aspects could be guaranteed by applying the load reduction factor(${\alpha}$).

  • Involved in a research for the application of seismic isolation to the nuclear industry, this study evaluates firstly the responses of seismic isolation system considering general ranges of structural period and damping ratio by using preliminary design formula. Secondly, coupling effects of input motions were evaluated to find out appropriate conditions of excitations and effect of the iteration for calculating yield displacement of lead core was also assessed in terms of response of a seismically isolated structure. Finally, the results of preliminary design calculation were compared with those of dynamic analysis and the propriety of the formula was evaluated and appropriate ranges of reduction factor were also suggested from the results.

  • A regression formula including the inlet film thickness as the parameter for the starvation factor in EHL condition is obtained by numerical analysis with Elord‘s cavitation algorithm. In addition, an apparatus for starved film thickness measurement by use of the white light interferometry is developed in order to verify the proposed regression formula. From observation results by this apparatus, the proposed regression formula can predict the reduction of central film thickness caused by starvation in a ball-plate contact with an uncertainty up to 10%
