In order to understand the counter anionic effects in a non-aqueous vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), we synthesized four types of electrolyte salts (1-ethyltriethamine tertafluoroborate, [E-TEDA]+[BF4]−, 1-ethyltriethamine hexafluorophosphate, [E-TEDA]+[PF6]−, 1-butyltriethylamine tertafluoroborate, [B-TEDA]+[BF4]−, and 1-buthyltriethamine hexafluorophosphate [B-TEDA]+[PF6]−) by counter anion exchange reaction after the SN2 reaction. We confirmed the successful synthesis of the electrolyte salts [E-TEDA]+[Br]− and [B-TEDA]+[Br]− via 1H-NMR spectroscopy and GC-mass analysis before the counter anion exchange reaction. The electric potential of the vanadium acetylacetonate, V(acac)3, as an energy storage chemical was shown to be 2.2 V in the acetonitrile solvent with each of the [E-TEDA]+[BF4]−, [E-TEDA]+[PF6]−, [B-TEDA]+[BF4]−, and [B-TEDA]+[PF6]− electrolyte salts. In a non-aqueous VRFB with a commercial Neosepta AFN membrane, the maximum voltages reached 1.0 V and 1.5 V under a fixed current value of 0.1 mA in acetonitrile with the [E-TEDA]+[BF4]− and [E-TEDA]+[PF6]− electrolyte salts, respectively. The maximum voltage was 0.8 V and 1.1 V under a fixed current value of 0.1 mA in acetonitrile with the [B-TEDA]+[BF4]− and [B-TEDA]+[PF6]− electrolyte salts, respectively. From these results, we concluded that in the non-aqueous VRFB more of the [PF6]− counter anion than the [BF4]− counter anion was transported onto the commercial Neosepta AFN anion exchange membrane.
Carbon nanotube(CNT) materials are expected a stable current collector without the phenomena such as oxidizing and melting of grid by redox electrolyte and with low cost. In this paper, two types of dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) with Pt abd CNT as a counter electrode were fabricated, then the energy conversion efficiency characteristics were investigated. The main purpose of this study is to find out the possibility of CNT material as cheap current collector of a large scale DSSC module. In addition, the Hall coefficient were measured by using FCM analysis.
We synthesized polypyrrole (PPy) nanotubules by oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole monomer within the pores of a polycarbonate template. The electrochemical behavior was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The redox potential was about -0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode, while the potential was about 0 V for PPy film. It is considered as the backbone grows according to the pore wall. Therefore, it is possible to be arranged regularly. That leads to improvement in the electron hopping. By electrochemical doping of glucose oxidase (GOx) on PPy nanotubules, an enzyme electrode has been fabricated. The kinetic parameter of biochemical reaction with glucose was evaluated. The formal Michaelis constant and maximum current calculated by computer were about 11.4 mmol $dm^3$ and 170.85 A respectively. Obviously, an affinity for the substrate and current response of the PPy nanotubules enzyme electrode are rather good, comparing with that of PPy film.
Currently, molecular devices are reported utilizing active self-assembled monolayers containing the nitro group as the active component, which has active redox centers[1]. We confirm the electrical properties of 4,4-di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-benzenethiolate. To deposit the SAM layer onto gold electrode, we transfer the prefabricated Au(111) substrates into a 1mM self-assembly molecules in THF solution. Au(111) substrates were prepared by ion beam sputtering method of gold onto the silicon wafer. As a result, we measured current-voltage curve using ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV STM), I-V curve also clearly shows several current peaks between the negative bias region (-0.3958V) and the positive bias region (0.4658V), respectively.
Recently, transition-metal-based hydroxide materials have attracted significant attention in various electrochemical applications owing to their low cost, high stability, and versatility in composition and morphology. Among these applications, transition-metal-based hydroxides have exhibited significant potential in supercapacitors owing to their multiple redox states that can considerably enhance the supercapacitance performance. In this study, nanostructured Ni-Mn double hydroxide is directly grown on a conductive substrate using an electrodeposition method. Ni-Mn double hydroxide exhibits excellent electrochemical charge-storage properties in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, such as a specific capacitance of 1364 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 mAcm-2 and a capacitance retention of 94% over 3000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 10 mAcm-2. The present work demonstrates a scalable, time-saving, and cost-effective approach for the preparation of Ni-Mn double hydroxide with potential application in high-charge-storage kinetics, which can also be extended for other transition-metal-based double hydroxides.
Agarose hydrogel, a solid electrolyte, was investigated voltammetrically in terms of transport properties and natural convection effects using a ferrocenyl compound as a redox probe. To confirm the diffusion properties of solute on the agarose interface, the diffusion coefficients (D) of ferrocenemethanol in agarose hydrogel were determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) according to the concentration of agarose hydrogel. While the value of D on the agarose interface is smaller than that in the bulk solution, the square root of the scan rate-dependent peak current reveals that the mass transport behavior of the solute on the agarose surface shows negligible convection or migration effects. In order to confirm the reduced natural convection on the gel interface, scan rate-dependent CV was performed in the solution phase and on the agarose surface, respectively. Slow scan voltammetry at the gel interface can determine a conventional and reproducible diffusion-controlled current down to a scan rate of 0.3 mV/s without any complicated equipment.
