  • The problem of welding stresses and fatigue behavior is the main concerns of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortion of structures by welding is exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. That is, expansion of material by high temperature and distortion by cooling during welding process is caused of tensile and compressive residual stresses on welding material, and this residual stresses reduce fracture and fatigue strength of welding structures. The accurate prediction of residual stress and redistribution due to fatigue crack propagation of weld zone is very important to improve the quality of weldment. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the redistribution of residual stresses due to fatigue crack propagation of weld zone.

  • For the precise assessment of the effect of welding residual stresses on structural strength and fatigue crack growth behavior, new FE analysis algorithms for the estimation of residual stress relaxation due to external load and redistribution due to fatigue crack propagation were proposed in this paper. Initial welding residual stress field was obtained by thermal elasto-plastic analysis considering temperature dependent material properties, and the amount of residual stress relaxation and redistribution were assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF(Stress Intensity Factor) range was evaluated by $\frac{1}{4}$-point displacement extrapolation method, and the effect of welding residual stresses on crack propagation was considered by introducing the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

  • Local buckling is a major consideration in the design of thin-walled cold-formed steel sections. The main effect of local buckling in plate elements under longitudinal compressive stresses is to cause a redistribution of the stresses in which the greatest portion of the load is carried near the supporting edges of the plate junctions. The redistribution produces increased stresses near the plate junctions and high bending stresses as a result of plate flexure, leading to ultimate loads below the squash load of the section. In singly symmetric cross-sections, the redistribution of longitudinal stress caused by local buckling also produces a shift of the line of action of internal force (shift of effective centroid). The fundamentally different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns lead to inconsistencies in traditional design approaches. The paper describes local buckling and shift of effective centroid of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel columns. Tests of channel columns have been described. The experimental local buckling loads were compared with the theoretical local buckling loads obtained using an elastic finite strip buckling analysis. The shift of the effective centroid was also compared with the shift predicted using the Australian/New Zealand and American specifications for cold-formed steel structures.

  • A general step-by-step simulation for the time-dependent analysis of segmentally-erected prestressed concrete box-girder bridges is presented. A three dimensional finite-element model for the balanced-cantilever construction of segmental bridges, including effects of the load history, material nonlinearity, creep, shrinkage, and aging of concrete and the relaxation of prestressing steel was developed using ABAQUS software. The models included three-dimensional shell elements to model the box-girder walls and Rebar elements representing the prestressing tendons. The step-by-step procedure allows simulating the construction stages, effects of time-dependent deformations of materials and changes in the structural system of the bridges. The structural responses during construction and throughout the service life were traced. A comparison of the developed computer simulation with available experimental results was conducted and good agreement was found. Deflection of the bridge deck, changes in stresses and strains and the redistribution of internal forces were calculated for different examples of bridges, built by the balanced-cantilever method, over thirty-year duration. Significant time-dependent effects on the bridge deflections and redistribution of internal forces and stresses were observed. The ultimate load carrying capacities of the bridges and the behavior before collapse were also determined. It was observed that the ultimate load carrying capacity of such bridges decreases with time as a result of time-dependent effects.

  • Evaluation of fracture toughness of welded structures has a significant influence on the structural design. However the residual stresses is redistributed while the welded structures is cut for preparing specimens. This study investigated an effect of the welding residual stress redistribution on the impact absorption energy of Charpy specimen. SA516Gr70 steel plate by at the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW) was cutting. Specimens for Charpy impact testing were taken from the welded plate. Two material removal mechanisms (wire cutting and water jet) were used to make the specimens. Welding residual stress and redistribution residual stress were measured using the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) method. The amount of redistribution of residual stress depends on the different material removal mechanism. Redistribution of residual stress of reduced the impact absorption energy by 15%.

  • For the assessment of the retardation of fatigue crack propagation behavior due to overload, new FE analysis algorithms considering compressive residual stress redistribution near crack tip was proposed in this paper. The size of plastic zone near crack tip was obtained by elasto-plastic analysis and it was compared with Irwin's equation. The amount of residual stress redistribution was assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis, and the difference of residual stress distributions between constant amplitude load and overload was obtained. In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF range was evaluated by ASTM E647, and the effect of residual stresses on crack propagation was considered using the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

  • In this study, an investigation based on the superposition principle to predict residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation itself initially through residual tensile stress field was performed by finite element method. The tendency in residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation recognized both from the analytical results and experimental result was the residual stress concentration consecutively occurred in the vicinity of crack tip even the situation that the crack propagated to the region initially residual compressive stress existed. The software for the analysis is ABAQUS, which is a general purpose finite element package. The analytical method that attempt to take the plastic deformation at the crack tip due to tensile residual stress into the consideration of residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation was proposed. The plastic zone size at the tip of fatigue crack and redistributed residual stresses were calculated by finite element method on the bases of the concept of Dugdale model. Comparing these analytical results with experimental results, it is verified that the residual stress redistribution caused by crack propagation can be predicted by finite element method with the proposed analytical method.

  • When a layer of cylindrical composite component containing an axisymmetric residual stress state is removed from the inner or outer surface, the dimension of the remaining material changes to balance internal forces. Therefore, in order to machine cylindrical composite components within tolerances, it is important to know dimensional changes caused by residual stress redistribution in the body. In this study, analytical solutions for dimensional changes and the redistribution of residual stresses due to the layer removal from a residually stressed cylindrically orthotropic cylinder were developed. The cylinder was assumed to have axisymmetric radial, tangential and axial residual stresses. The result of this study is useful in cases where the initial residual stress distribution in the component has been measured by a non-destructive technique such as neutron diffraction with no information on the effect of layer removal operation on the dimensional changes.
