  • There has been great effect on development and usage of resources as well as technological development including everyday life pattern to maintain environmental sustainability, Also, It is tend to become negative for people's concern of nature ecosystem toward new technological developments because it is neither environmentally, nor naturally friendly. Therefore, our study is to implement expert education and research system which includes the trends and requests of our society with objectives as follows; First, Training industrial technology and policy maker who can understand and practice ecological ethics. Second, Educating people with expertise which can evaluate and complement the environmental friendliness about new industrial technologies. Third, Educating people who can develop technology which is environmentally friendly. Our new program requires various knowledges and balanced point of view. To this end, students are required to understand field of art and sciences including emerging eco-buddhism subject as well as field of state-of-the art environmental technologies such as recycling technology and clean production technology.

  • To provide successful treatment policy and to apply sources for establishing plan, municipal solid wastes quantity was investigated as physical and chemical characteristics from Sunchon city. Results are like following after checking out characteristics by seasons, type. The average specific weight of municipal solid wastes is $219kg/m^3$ for combustible wastes, $391kg/m^3$ for non-combustible. Food wastes of combustible wastes contained moisture of 38.1% as standard of moisture weight per real weight, 49.6% moisture is contained in non-combustible wastes except food wastes moisture. Moisture, volatile and ash are contented by 16.9%, 68.1% and 15.0% in combustible wastes except food wastes. That means combustible wastes are available a refuse incineration. The low calorific value of only combustible waste is 2,962kca1/kg that is good for refuse incineration.

  • This study investigated the environmental and economical assessment for sewage sludge treatment options including biogasification, incineration, carbonization, drying, and solidification. Additionally it is also investigated the economical feasibility of the current guidelines (Digestion efficiency for organic waste = 45 %, Moisture content of sludge = 95 and 93 %) and it aimed to suggest the scientific informations for a policy-making. For the economical feasibility the 30 plants with anaerobic digestion treatment and the 17 plants without anaerobic digestion treatment were investigated. The result of the comparison of sewage sludge treatment options showed that anaerobic digestion+incineration was the most economically feasible considering incineration and drying. For smaller treatment capacity, solidification was the most economically feasible considering carbonization and solidification and anaerobic digestion+carbonization was the most economically feasible considering carbonization and solidification.

  • As a waste management tool, the prohibition of landfilling of food waste has enforced since 2005. the composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) has changed dramatically. In this study, MSW generated from a small city collected once a year in 2004, 2005 and 2007, to qualify the characteristics of MSW before and after implementation of the tool. The prohibition of landfilling of food waste dramatically reduces food waste in MSW to 5.5 weight %, and on the other hand results to increase papers to 50.6 % and plastics to 22.6 %, The bulk density lowers to 50 %, which newly propose the necessity of volume reduction and incineration of MSW to ensure efficient transport and disposal. As water content of MSW reduces to 15.9 %, lower heat value of MSW after prohibition of landfilling of food waste increase to 3565.6 kcal/kg. Mitigation of bad smell and waste leachate with lower contaminants are recommendable as a kind of positive effects benefited by the tool.

  • As it is not allowed to landfill sludge from 2001 by the act of waste management, new systems of treating sludge are necessary. Life Cycle Assessment, LCA, is a method for evaluating systems in the aspect of environment and also can apply to decision making tools for policy making. The objective of this study is to assess 3 alternatives of landfill: incineration, composting, solidification by applying LCA. This study is done with operation data from incinerator in Kuri, composting facility in Nanjido, solidification facility in Kimpo and electricity and transport data of Korea in 1998 are used. The results of the LCA is that the composting system is most environmental-friendly and the solidification system is least environmental-friendly.

  • Sustainable resource management(SRM) is regarded as the core strategy to achieve Dematerialisation and Decoupling of economic growth from the use of natural resources and environmental degradation. This paper presents status SRM policy and research in worldwide, and analyzes decoupling of economic activity from energy consumption of domestic manufacturing, using decoupling factor. Also This paper suggests methodologies and strategies of SRM in Korea. SRM is established through various analysis and survey as following; forecasting of resource demand, material flow analysis and value chain analysis, resource market structure analysis. Through these analysis, we can obtain hot-spot and solution of environmental burden, recycling market management, recycling technology and best-optimal supply rate of primary and secondary resource. In Korea, resource management system must be linked with national and regional material flow analysis, and it is necessary to make SRM-law of national dimension for effective run of sustainable resource management system.

  • Recently, the waste energy utilization has become the main interest in energy industries, due to high oil prices, the low carbon, green growth policy and the RPS (Renewable Portfolio Standards) of our government. Therefore, energy guzzling companies such as district heating companies, textile industries are replacing energy to RDP/RPF. Especially, a lot of big companies are carrying out survey to commercialize the waste plastics pyrolysis technologies developed in Korea. In this paper, status of the pyrolysis technology of Korea were reviewed overall including basis of technology, waste plastics resources, research & development, and commercialization.

  • Nitrogen and phosphorus in livestock manure are environmental pollutants, but also could be valuable industrial resources. In the present study, we (1) introduced various nitrogen removal technologies such as stripping, thermal method, membrane, and electrodialysis, (2) reviewed relevant studies reported in 2011-2020, in particular, full-scale experiences, and (3) assessed each technologies based on the above survey results. In addition, we provided the information on the appropriate range of the pH, temperature, gas and liquid ratio, and so on in ammonia stripping process, and expected mass balance when it is connected to biogasification process. We hope the content herein can be helpful for making policy and operating full-scale plant in Korea.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the fashion industry's response to climate change and how these discussions unfolded at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Climate change response projects by B Corp-certified fashion companies are examined, focusing on stakeholder efforts and reviewing online media reports. Text data were collected from web documents, interviews, and op-eds relating to COP28 from December 2018 to April 2024 and analyzed using text mining and semantic network analysis to identify critical keywords and contexts. The analysis revealed that the fashion industry is fulfilling its environmental responsibilities through various strategies, prompting changes in consumer behavior by advocating sustainable consumption, including carbon removal, energy transition, and recycling promotion. Stakeholders in online media and those present at COP28 discussed issues relating to climate change in the fashion industry, focusing on environmental protection, energy, greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable material usage, and social responsibility. Key issues at COP28 included policy and regulation, climate change response, energy transition, carbon emissions management, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Additionally, by examining the main collections exhibited at the fashion show during COP28, the study analyzed how messages about climate change were conveyed. Fashion companies communicated the industry's response through exhibitions and fashion shows, suggesting a move toward balancing environmental protection and economic growth through the development of sustainable materials, the expansion of recycling and reuse practices, and the modern reinterpretation of cultural heritage.
