  • Concrete is the most widely used building material all over the world, because of its many technical and economic qualities. This pressure on the concrete resource causes an intensive exploitation of the quarries of aggregates, which results in a exhaustion of these and environmental problems. That is why recycling and valorization of materials are considered as future solutions, to fill the deficit between production and consumption and to protect the environment. This study is part of the valorization process of local materials, which aims to reuse marble waste as fine aggregate (excess loads of marble waste exposed to bad weather conditions) available in the marble quarry of Fil-fila (Skikda, East of Algeria) in the manufacture of self-compacting concretes. It consists of introducing the marble waste as sand into the self-compacting concrete formulation, with variable percentages (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) and to study the development of its properties both in fresh state (air content, density, slump flow, V-funnel, L-box and sieve stability) as well as the hardened one (compressive strength and flexural strength). The results obtained showed us that marble wastes can be used as sand in the manufacture of self compacting concretes.

  • The idea of Sustainable, first mentioned in "Our Future (Bruntdland)" from the United Nations report released in 1987 has been highly affect design disciplines in developed countries in 21st century. It relocated industrial society and structure's attentions to nature and recourse conservation and reuse. Designed and manufactured products eventually disposed and it leads to waste of resources as well as creates environmental issues. Unfortunately, vast majority of designers starts designing without anticipation of this matter and produce more believing this leads to more sales. However shorter life of a product will create bigger increase of resource consumption and waste than, importance of re-usage and recycle will eventually increase. In modern furniture industry metal and plastics are frequently used beside wood that material has been diverse than in past. However, there are lack of plans and regulations of re-usage of those material due to difficulties of separating each different materials and collecting due to it's size. This study would like to look into recycling rate, methods and usage of three major materials (wood, metal, plastic) that is typically used in current furniture industries. Furthermore, see the potential of sustainable furniture by analyzing furniture practices made by each different recycled material from old furniture and what designers should consider to achieve feasibility of sustainable furniture.

  • Cement is the most significant component in concrete. Large scale manufacturing of cement consumes more energy and release harmful products (Carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere that adversely affect the environment and depletes the natural resources. A lot of research is going on in globally concentrating on the recycling and reuse of waste materials from many industries. A major share of research is focused on finding cementitious materials alternatives to ordinary Portland cement. Many industrial waste by-products such as quartz powder, metakaolin, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, and fly ash etc. are under investigations for replacement of cement in concrete to minimize greenhouse gases and improve the sustainable construction. In current research, the effects of a new generation, ultra-fine material i.e., alccofine which is obtained from ground granulated blast furnace slag are studied as partial replacement by 25% and with varying amounts of sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde (i.e., 0.3%, 0.35% and 0.40%) on mechanical, water absorption, thermal and microstructural properties of concrete. The results showed moderate improvement in all concrete properties. Addition of SNF with combination of alccofine showed a significant enhancement in fresh, hardened properties and water absorption test as well as thermal and microstructural properties of concrete.

  • In this paper, a development of composite bridge decks was proposed for design of civil and architectural structures to reuse the empty cans and plastics etc. The experimental specimens were made of rigid foamed urethane taking advantage of corrosionlessness in steel bridge decks, and simplicity in the field construction. 'Therefore, introducing the empty cans into the rigid foamed urethane, this experimentation have been carried out to demonstrate and evaluate the structural behavior by means of loading and vibration tests in composite bridge decks. Consequently, it was possible that had a good effect on the structural behavior by absorbing the strain due to the low elasticity of rigid foamed urethane, and not influence to cans in composite bridges.

  • The effect and control of wood property of reconstituted composite panels for improved board properties by wood-waste materials and development of combination method for heterogeneous materials have been of interest to the wood science researchers. The purpose of this study is to consider the properties in relation to hot pressing conditions and to develope the optimum hot pressing condition with waste wood and waste tire for the manufacturing of composite boards. The study of composite boards for recycling of wood and waste tire is nothing up to the present. Physical and mechanical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, swelling coefficient, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending test were studied. The condition of 3-stage press time for the lowest moisture content of composite board was $4{\rightarrow}3{\rightarrow}3$ minutes. Specific gravity of composite panels was affected mainly by the amount of rubber chip. Because of the low rigidity and high elasticity in rubber chip, it is considered the composite panel was adequate material in the place of compression load, but not bending load. Therefore, it was concluded that a use of rubber-based wood composite panel is proper to the interior materials such as floor a room than exterior materials. From the test results, the most optimum hot pressing conditions were $4{\rightarrow}3{\rightarrow}3$ minutes for 3-stage press time and $45{\rightarrow}20{\rightarrow}5kg/cm^2$ for 3-stage press pressure. The rubber-based wood composite panel was very excellent in elasticity by combination of rubber chip in comparison with existing other wood-based materials. Therefore, it was considered that rubber-based wood composites can be applicable to every interior materials such as floor a room and will be expected to effective reuse and recycle of waste tires and wood-waste materials, and will be contribute to protection of environment pollution in earth.

  • In the past decades, recycling use of demolished concrete was almost limited to the types of recycled coarse aggregate with a size of about 5-40 mm and recycled fine aggregate with a size of about 0-5 mm for concrete structures, and reuse of demolished concrete lumps (DCLs) with a size much larger than that of recycled aggregate, e.g., 50-300 mm, has been limited to roadbed, backfilling materials, or discarded to landfills. Treatment processes of DCLs are much simpler than those of recycled aggregate, leading to less cost and more energy-saving. In the future, the amount of demolished concrete is estimated to be much higher, so reuse of DCLs for concrete structures will become necessary. The objectives of this paper are to document the process of making reinforced concrete beams with DCLs, and to discuss the flexural and shear behaviors of those reinforced DCL beams through an experimental program, which includes three beams filled with DCLs and one conventional beam for investigating the flexural strengths and deformations, and 12 beams filled with DCLs and two conventional beams for investigating the shear strengths and deformations. The authors hope that the proposed concept offers another sustainable solution to the concrete industry.

  • It has been reported that aqueous indirect carbonation process of calcium silicate mineral could be one of the most promising methods for $CO_2$ sequestration. The process consists of two main steps, extraction of Ca from calcium silicate and carbonation of the extracted solution by $CO_2$. Many types of acids such as HCl and $HNO_3$ can be used in the extraction step of the process. In the case of using aqueous acetic acid solution as the extraction solvent, acetic acid can be reproduced at the carbonation step of the extracted solution by $CO_2$ and recycled to extraction step for reuse it. Industrial by-products such as iron and steel slags are potential raw materials of the indirect carbonation process due to their high contents of calcium silicate. In this study, in order to examine the extraction efficiency of domestic electric arc furnace steel slag by aqueous acetic acid solution, extraction experiments of the slag were performed by using the aqueous acetic acid solutions of varying extraction conditions ; acetic acid concentrations, extraction temperatures and times.

  • The $FeCl_3$ solution has been used as an etchant for etching of metal. It is necessary to reuse the etching solution because waste $FeCl_3$ etchant generated after use has provided environmental and economic problems. In this study, HCl was mixed with the $FeCl_2$ solution and then $H_2O_2$ was added into the mixed solution to oxidize the $Fe^{2+}$. During the oxidation process, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was measured and the relationship between ORP and oxidation ratio was investigated. As a result, this study found that the ORP was increased with increasing the concentration of HCl and $H_2O_2$, while the ORP is decreased with oxidation progress. Such a behavior was in good agreement with Nernst's equation. Also, the oxidation efficiency reached about 99% when a sufficient amount of HCl and $H_2O_2$ were added.
