To investigate the compressive behavior of partially encased recycled aggregate concrete (PERAC) stub columns after exposed to elevated temperatures, 22 specimens were tested. The maximum temperature suffered, the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), the endurance time and the spacing between links were considered as the main parameters. It was found that the failure mode of post-heated PERAC columns generally matched that of traditional partially encased composite (PEC) columns, but the flange of specimens appeared premature buckling after undergoing the temperature of 400℃ and above. Additionally, the ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens deteriorated with the elevated temperatures and extended heating time. When 400℃< T ≤ 600℃, the strength reduction range is the largest, about 11% ~ 17%. The higher the replacement ratio of RCA, the lower the ultimate strength of specimens. At the temperature of 600℃, the ultimate strength of specimens with the RCA replacement ratio of 50% and 100% is 0.94 and 0.91 times than that of specimens without RCA, respectively. But the specimen with 50% replacement ratio of RCA showed the best ductility performance. And the bearing capacity and ductility of PERAC stub columns were changed for the better due to the application of links. When the RCA replacement ratio is 100%, the ultimate strength of specimens with the link spacing of 100 mm and 50 mm increased 14% and 25% than that of the specimen without links, respectively. Based on the results above, a formula for calculating the ultimate strength of PERAC stub columns after exposure to high temperatures was proposed.

The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) as a substitute for natural aggregates in new concrete produces both economic and environmental advantages. Most of the RCA applications for pavements have been primarily applied to support layers for roads and airfields. This paper summarizes a work completed at the University of Illinois in partnership with the O'Hare Modernization Program to examine the effect of coarse and fine RCA on the concrete's fresh and hardened properties for airfield rigid pavement applications. Ten different RCA concrete mixtures were prepared with the incorporation of different percentages of RCA fines as well as replacement of cement with high volume percentages of supplementary cementitious materials such as Class C fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag to improve the workability and long-term properties of RCA concrete. All the mixes on this stage included 100% recycled coarse aggregates and the Two-Stage Mixing Approach was used as a mixing procedure. Based on the results obtained in the research, mixes with high percentages of recycled fine and coarse aggregates could be used for construction of airfield concrete pavements in conjunction with supplementary cementitious materials
Aggregate resources in Korea are expected to run out owing to an increase in development demand and construction investment. Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), extracted from waste concrete, have a lower quality than natural aggregates. However, RCA can produce concrete similar in quality to the normal concrete by aggregate pretreatment, use of admixtures, and quality control. RCA are most suitable for use in precast concrete products such as sidewalk blocks and revetment blocks. Herein, the feasibility of producing revetment blocks using recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), similar in quality to normal concrete, was analyzed. The amount of RCA was varied, and moderate high early strength cement and steam curing were used to produce the concrete test blocks. In the block test, the load resistance characteristics of the blocks were evaluated to determine optimal RAC and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar compositions. Thus, the variable that reduced the cement content was determined at the same level as that of natural aggregate concrete by the control of steam curing. In the concrete block test, although this depends on the reinforcement ratio, the RAC block exhibited the same or better performance than a normal concrete block. Therefore, the low quality of RCA in RAC is no longer a problem when concrete mixing and curing are controlled and appropriate reinforcement is used.

Concrete continues to be the most consumed construction material in the world, only next to water. Due to rapid increase in construction activities, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste constitutes a major portion of total solid waste production in the world. It is important to assess the amount of C&D waste being generated and analyse the practices needed to handle this waste from the point of waste utilization, management and disposal addressing the sustainability aspects. The depleting natural resources in the current scenario warrants research to examine viable alternative means, modes and methods for sustainable construction. This study reports processing Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) using a rod mill, for the first time. Parameters such as amount of C&D waste for processing, nature of charge and duration of processing time have been optimized for obtaining good quality RCA. Performance of RCA based concrete and performance enhancement techniques of 50% RCA based concrete are discussed in this paper.
In this study, mixed recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) was produced by mixing RCA from waste concrete in order to evaluate a new method of RCA production. Bond strength between reinforcing bars and RCA concrete was qualitatively evaluated as a part of continuous studies to establish design code of reinforced concrete structural members using recycled aggregate. For practical application, specimens were manufactured with the ready mix RCA concrete. Parameters investigated include: concrete compressive strength (i.e 21, 27 and 40 MPa), replacement levels (i.e 0, 30, 60 and 100%), bar position (i.e vertical and horizontal) and bar location (75 and 225 mm). For the pull-out test, each specimen was in the form of a cube, with each side of 150 mm in length and a deformed bar, 16 mm in diameter, was embedded in the center of each specimen. From the test results, the most of HT type specimen with compressive strength of 21 and 27 MPa showed lower bond strength than the ones provided in CEB-FIP and considered in reinforcement location factor ($\alpha\;=\;1.3$). It was reasoned that bonded area of top bar specimen was reduced at the soffit of reinforcement because of bleed water of fresh concrete. Therefore the reinforcement location factor in current KCI design code should be reviewed and modified.
The present study targets to access the consequence of utilization of coarse aggregates retrieved from waste concrete as a substitution of coarse fraction of natural aggregates and silica nano-particles as partial substitution of cement using principles of factorial design. Furthermore, procedures of design of experiments are employed to examine the effect of use of recycled aggregates and nano-silica. In this investigation, compressive strength found after at 7, 28, 90 and 365 days, split and flexural tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number and are chosen as responses, whereas the percentages of recycled coarse aggregates (RCA%) and nano-silica (NS(%)) are selected as factors. Analysis of Variance has been conducted on the experimental results for the selected responses with consideration the both factors, which indicates that RCA (%) and NS (%) have substantial impact on the various responses. However, the present analysis depicts that interaction between factors has considerable effect on the chosen parameters of concrete. Furthermore, validation experiments are carried to validate these models for compressive and tensile strength for 100% RCA and 1% NS. The results of comparative study indicates that that the error of the estimation determined using the relevant models are found to be small (±5%) in comparison with the analogous experimental results, which authenticates the calculated models.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the strength development of blast furnace slag concrete in response to the use of recycled aggregate as alkali activator. The influence of the amount of recycled aggregate was evaluated depending on different ratios of replacement for each RFA and RCA to NFA and NCA, respectively. The results indicated that as replacement of RFA and RCA increased, their strength exhibited to be increased. This was due to the fact that the latent hydraulic properties of blast furnace slag was activated by the alkali in recycled aggregates. However, in case of 365-days, it showed lower compressive strength than using NA(natural aggregates) which could be explained as the exhaustively use of alkali containing in RA. The specimens using RA showed about 90% of compressive strength comparing with specimens using NA.

Many models have been used to represent the effects of confining stress, bulk stress, and shear stress on the value of the resilient modulus (Mr). This study was conducted to estimate Mr of the recycled materials such as recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) through the repeated load cyclic test. Also, two models were applied to estimation of Mr for comparing between measured Mr values and predicted Mr values. The first model (A-model) can provide a quick and easy estimation of the Mr based on the bulk stress, while the second model (N-model) includes not only the bulk stress but also the shear stress. Statistical analysis indicated that all results using the both of models are significant at a 95 % confidence level. Therefore, the both of models could be used as an effective prediction model of Mr for RCA and RAP. Especially, the Model 2 including the parameters of the bulk stress and the shear stress could give more reliable estimation at the high range of Mr values.

The mechanical properties such as compressive strength and elastic modulus of recycled aggregate concrete containing fly ash are investigated in this study. The experimental parameters were replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) and fly ash. Replacement ratio of RCA was 0, 30, 50, and 70% and replacement ratio of fly ash was 0, 15, 30%. The experimental results were extensively discussed about compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete at ages of 7, 28 and 91 days. Compared with concrete not containing fly ash, the decrease of compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete containing fly ash with the replacement ratio of 30% was significant. Therefore, the test results represented that the fly ash replacement ratio of less than 30% was favorable in terms of mechanical properties of recycled coarse aggregate concrete.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) using low quality recycled aggregate with or without washing before usage. The recycled aggregate concrete evaluated in this study contained various amounts of low quality recycled aggregate, viz. 30%, 60% and 100%. To evaluate the performance of the recycled aggregate concrete, various test methods were employed to assess its compressive strength, absorption, surface resistance, ultrasound velocity, chloride ion resistance, etc. The properties of the RAC with 30% and 60% washed recycled aggregate were similar those of the natural aggregate. However, the properties of the RAC with 100% washed recycled aggregate were slightly lower than those of the other versions. Also, the RAC with the non-washed recycled aggregate exhibited lower performance results. The results showed that the RAC with washed recycled aggregate had similar properties to normal concrete (concrete using natural aggregate). This implies that the recycled aggregate should be washed to improve the RCA.
