  • This paper aims to examin the channel of waste collection, as well as to clarify the relationship between collection types and regional characteristics. According to the analysis results, a kind of used paper and old metal are mainly collected in regions which have a large population size, high population increasing rates, high population composition rates of secondary industry and high degree of self-supporting in public finance. On the other hand, in regions which have a small population size, low population increasing rates or a decrease in population, and high population composition rates of primary industry and rates of agricultural household, there are high collection rates for others recyclable wastes, a kind of scrap iron, used paper, and used bottle. These results show that the collection types of recyclable domestic wastes are different depend on industry developed degree in region.

  • This study was conducted to investigate and analyze the discharge characteristics of recyclable material from S-city, S-district, in order to improve the sorting efficiency in recycling sorting facility. The characteristics of recyclable materials collected were analyzed in three different scopes; source origin, collection and transportation, and sorting steps. The average of recyclable waste generation is $0.121kg/day^*man$. Regional collection period appears to be three times a week, and the density of mixed recyclable wastes showed the average of $202.4kg/m^3$ in the waste collection vehicle. In the analysis into the sorting steps, the average of carrying amount of mixed recycling products is 1,154.6 ton/month, the average of appeared density is $181kg/m^3$, the average amount of separated recycling products is 448.5kg/month, and the density of recycling residue is found out to be $48kg/m^3$. The sorting rate of recyclable material is 38.85% and the percentage of residues is 55.90%. Out of 7,744.8 tons of the total recyclable residues, 4,272.1 tons were found out to be possible recylable materials. As a result of increasing the recycling rate of residues, the encouragement of base-recycling, the automation and retrofit of sorting equipment, and energy recovery from recycling residue were discussed.

  • This study was conducted by the awareness that although interior spaces using the techniques and characteristics of assemblage are excellent means to reveal distinctiveness and identity with preeminent originality which are different from other spaces, there are few domestic studies and literatures on them. The results analyzed by preceding studies and cases on the characteristics of expression of assemblage which appear in the interior spaces of commercial areas can be summarized as follows; First, assemblage expresses identity of spaces with symbols capable of multiple interpretations through the method of integration and repetition of the materials used. Second, it strongly reminds visitors of memories on spaces by producing odd and unfamiliar scenes with such designs as installation art. Third, when it uses ordinary materials, it adds combination, integration, transformation or colors to the materials for extraordinary traits. Fourth, it pursues sustainability through recycling or upcycling by using wastes or natural materials. Fifth, in order to express materials to fit the purposes of spaces, it formulates outcomes with intentional plans. To sum up above analysis results, expressions of assemblage which appear in modern commercial spaces are characterized by expression of symbols with multiple meanings, purse formativeness which fit the purposes and meanings of spaces, play the role of reminding memories on places by producing extraordinary spaces with strangeness and unfamiliarity such as installation art and sometimes show sustainability by using recyclable materials. The results of this study are expected to be utilized as reference materials which suggest directions of approach to interior spaces through assemblage techniques and materials which can be used in various design terms by domestic designers.

  • The integrated solid waste management for Seoul Metropolitan city can be established on the basis of the following hierarchy of priorities: 1. Efforts for source reduction should be propelled by both government and citizens to achieve the effects of resource conservation. The adequate production and consumption which are environmentally amenable and sustainable can be induced by the reasonable imposition of deposit money for waste treatment to one-time use products. To accomplish source reduction effectively, the induction of legal and institutional regulation of producer and consumer participation is requisite. 2. For resource recovery, wastes generated should be recycled as far as practicable. Community residents are responsible to separate discharge, the authorities concerned have responsibility of separate collection, and recycling industry should be assissted through tax reduction and financing. Resource separation facilities can be constructed at Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site for wastes not separately collected due to some unavoidable circumstances. 3. Garbage should be composted. Garbage is uneconomical for incineration, because it has high moisture content and low calorie, thus there is no reason for the incineration of garbage even though garbage is classified into combustibles. Composting facilities can be located at sites which are not densely populated and easily accessible to transportation, for example, Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site. Compost produced can be managed by the authorities for the use of fertilizer to a green tract of suburban land and farms. 4. Nonhazardous combustible wastes not recyclable can be utilized for thermal recovery at the incinerators which are completely equipped with pollution control devices. According to the trend of local autonomy and the equity principle of local autonomous entities, incineration facilities of minimal capacity required can be constructed at each districts of Seoul Metropolitan city which have organized local assembly. In case of Yangcheon district, the economically combustible waste quantity is about 260 tons/day which exceeds 150 tons/day, the incineration capacity of existing facility. But, from now on, waste quantity can be reduced substantially by the intensive efforts of citizens for source reduction and recycling and the institutional support of administrative organizations. Especially, it is indispensable for the government to constitute institutional and technological bases that can recycle paper and plastics form 43% of waste generated. A good time for constructing of incineration facilities for municipal solid waste can be postponed to the time that pollution control technologies of domestic enterprises are fully developed to satisfy the standards of air pollution prevention, because the life expectancy of Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site is about 25 years. Within this period, institutional improvements and technological advancements can be attained, while the air qual. ity of Seoul Metropolitan city can be ameliorated to the level to afford incineration facilities. 5. For final disposal, incombustibles and ash are landfilled sanitarily at Kimpo Metropolitan landfill site.

  • In order to improve the waste management system for the unit of small villages, we visited 14 counties nationwide and investigated the present conditions of the farming and fishing villages on waste management. First, we selected one concentrated residential type village and one separated residential type village. Then we investigated the quantities and the characteristics of the domestic wastes generated from the 2 sample villages that we chose early on. The concentration of 7 heavy metals in open burned residuals was analyzed. The results are as follows: (1) We distributed the 799 questionnaires to public servants (83 Gun, 716 Myon) and 337 questionnaires to residents. In accordance with a result of questionnaire on the Volume-Based Waste Fee System, the rate of participated questionnaire was 70.3% from public servants and 31.8% from residents. (2) From the survey on two chosen villages, the generation of municipal waste was 48.6g/person/day in A Village, 54.3g/person/day in B Village. This amount was smaller than that of national average of 1.05kg because of excluding recyclable wastes and some of incinerated combustible waste. (3) The 14 counties entered the aged society. There were 2 aging societies, 8 aged societies and 4 super-aged societies. And the average ratios of Public financial independence and waste budget of financial independence were 16.1% and 17.9% respectively. These are lower than that of national average of 57.2% and 31.4%. This indicates that these factors seemed to be operated with the hindrance insettling Volume-Based Waste Fee System in the small villages.
