  • This paper proposes a new series-connected diode rectifier which draws sinusoidal input currents. The proposed rectifier system is configured by adding an auxiliary circuit to the conventional 12-pulse series-connected diode rectifier and employing a current injection technique. A low kVA (0.02Po (PU) ) active current source injects a triangular current results in near sinusoidal input current from the utility with less than 1% THD. The resulting system is suitable for high voltage and high power applications. Experimental results is provided from a 220VA rectifier system.

  • A high efficiency interleaved active clamp forward converter with self driven synchronous rectifiers for a modular power processor is presented. To simplify the gate drive circuits, N-P MOSFETs coupled active clamp method is used. An efficiency about 90% for the load range of 50-100% is achieved. The details of design for the power stage and current mode control circuit are provided, and also some experimental results are given.

  • Most of inverters adopt a diode rectifier as an input stage, which has very simple and rugged structure and therefore low cost. In order to properly design the 3-phase diode rectifier with an output smoothing capacitor and input inductors, it is necessary to fully simulate the system due to its nonlinear characteristics. Therefore this paper describes the operating behaviors including the current commutation in detail by using the proposed equivalent circuit, and also proposes the Simulink-based model of the system. The simulation results show the validity of the proposed model in all operating conditions.

  • In the three phase full-wave thyristor rectifier, heat radiation concentrated at a few thyristor(s), while equipment's output is normal. That is very important on the predictive maintenance or checking including replacement of parts(or modules). Therefore, this report explains the method of effective diagnosis and the reason that firing control modules have to be adjusted accuratly on each phase.

  • In audio techniques calculation of digital filters is accelerated considerably by use of wave variables instead of voltages and currents. The suitability of wave variables for digital simulation of power converters was investigated and the results are reported in this paper. The original method is described briefly, modelling of switches and diode rectifiers is presented, examples are given and the features of the method are discussed.

  • This paper proposes an energy storage-assisted, series-connected module-integrated power conversion system that integrates a photovoltaic power conditioner and a charge balancing circuit. In conventional methods, a photovoltaic power conditioner and a cell-balancing circuit are needed for photovoltaic systems with energy storage devices, but they cause a complex configuration and high cost. Moreover, an imbalanced output voltage of the module-integrated converter for PV panels can be a result of partial shading. Partial shading can lead to the fault condition of the boost converter in shaded modules and high voltage stresses on the devices in other modules. To overcome these problems, a bidirectional buck-boost converter with an integrated magnetic device operating for a charge-balancing circuit is proposed. The proposed circuit has multiple secondary rectifiers with inductors sharing a single magnetic core, which works as an inductor for the main bidirectional charger/discharger of the energy storage. The secondary rectifiers operate as a cell-balancing circuit for both energy storage and the series-connected multiple outputs of the module-integrated converter. The operating principle of the cell-balancing power conversion circuit and the power stage design are presented and validated by PSIM simulation for analysis. A hardware prototype with equivalent photovoltaic modules is implemented for verification. The results verify that the modularized photovoltaic power conversion system in the output series with an energy storage successfully works with the proposed low-cost bidirectional buck-boost converter comprising a single magnetic device.

  • AC to DC converter that consists of relatively simple diode rectifier devices has been widely used in the field of the electric propulsion system. Also, since this rectifier includes large harmonics in the input current, a variety of researches have been developed to reduce the harmonics. The proposed method of this paper is to reduce the harmonics included in the input current of rectifiers and propulsion motor by injecting the output current of diode rectifier into the input of them. In addition, the proposed method ensures electrical safety through the respective isolation of the injection current, the source, and the loads using the Wye-Delta insulating transformer applied in current injection device that is installed in the input circuit of rectifiers and propulsion motor. The proposed method is simulated by applying to the electric propulsion ship that is currently operating. We confirm the validity of the proposed method compared with conventional power conversion system.

  • Most of DC 1500V electric railway substations have adopted diode rectifiers to supply stable DC power. However, the diode rectifiers operate in the first quadrant of the voltage-current plane and thus need regenerative inverters which transfer the surplus regenerative power caused by regenerative braking of electric train sets into the grid. In order to select the proper capacity and installation position of regenerative inverter, it needs to investigate the consumed and regenerative energy of the electric traction substations in advance. This paper presents an analysis of regenerative energy in two substations operating in Seoul Seolleung and Kwangju Yangdong substations. DC line voltage and feeder currents are measured for a day to calculate consumed and regenerative power far four feeders. We calculated an amount of regenerative energy consumed in other feeders and estimated the cost reduction in energy consumption due to the reuse of regenerative energy
