  • Recently, cave candidates have been discovered on other planets besides the Earth, such as the Moon and Mars. When we go to other planets, caves could be possible human habitats providing natural protection from cosmic threats. In this study, seven cave candidates have been found on Pavonis Mons and Ascraeus Mons in Tharsis Montes on Mars. The cave candidates were selected using the images of the Context Camera (CTX) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). The Context Camera could provide images with the high resolution of 6 meter per pixel. The diameter of the candidates ranges from 50 to 100m. Cushing et al. (2007) have analyzed the temperature change at daytime and nighttime using the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) for the sites of potential cave candidates. Similarly, we have examined the temperature change at daytime and at nighttime for seven cave candidates using the method of Cushing et al. (2007). Among those, only one candidate showed a distinct temperature change. However, we cannot verify a cave based on the temperature change only and further study is required for the improvement of this method to identify caves more clearly.

  • An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a powered aerial vehicle that does not carry a human operator, uses aerodynamic forces to provide vehicle lift, can fly autonomously or be piloted remotely, can be expendable or recoverable, and can carry a lethal or non-lethal payload. An UAV is very important weapon system and is currently being employed in many military missions (surveillance, reconnaissance, communication relay, targeting, strike, etc.) in the war. To accomplish UAV's missions, guarantee of survivability should be preceded. The main objective of this study is a local path planning to maximize survivability for UAV on the battlefield of dynamic threats (obstacles, surface-to-air missiles, radar etc.). A local path planning is capable of producing a new path in response to environmental changes. This study suggests a $Smart$ $A^*$ (Smart A-star) algorithm for local path planning. The local path planned by $Smart$ $A^*$ algorithm is compared with the results of existing algorithms ($A^*$ $Replanner$, $D^*$) and evaluated performance of $Smart$ $A^*$ algorithm. The result of suggested algorithm gives the better solutions when compared with existing algorithms.

  • Modeling and simulation is important for military training. People can feel perspective when stereoscope images are created using multi-channel visualizations. A submarine oscillates when the submarine is just below the surface of the sea, so that the reconnaissance becomes difficult. Also, the operator should read the information of the target within 6 seconds using the periscope. The operator must have experience. To solve these problems, stereoscopic multi-channel visualization has been tested. The iCAVE system of KAIST provides a large-scale screen, 7 PCs, and 14 projectors to create the stereoscope images. To simulate the motion of a submarine just below the ocean surface, a 4-DOF motion platform is used. The motion data is transmitted to the visual system and the motion platform through the UDP protocol. Variety of weather conditions are created using the Vega Prime software. The stereoscopic multi-channel visualization and the motion platform system created a realistic simulation system.

  • Nowadays, the Surveying field is growing rapidly in terms of technology such as TS(Total Station) surveying, photographic surveying, digital aerial photogrammetry, utilization of GIS(Geographic Information System) using high-resolution satellite imagery, obtaining 3D Coordinate using GPS. But control point surveying, benchmark measuring, and field Surveying are still performed by the engineers in the field. So, 3D yerrestrial laser scanner comes to the fore recently. 3D terrestrial laser scanner can get 3D coordinate about a number of sites of the subject in a short period with high accuracy. This paper compared the accuracy of data from the performance using 3D terrestrial laser scanner with that of TS. It also obtained the geopositioning accuracy result equivalent to the surveying result of TS. With further researches in the future, it is expected to be used not only in LiDAR itself but also in various areas like reconnaissance Surveying and construction by combining with TS or other Surveying equipments.

  • Recently, the applications of unmanned robots are increasing in various fields including surveillance and reconnaissance, planet exploration and disaster relief. To perform their missions with success, the robots should be able to evaluate terrain's characteristics quantitatively and identify traversable regions to progress toward a goal using mounted sensors. Recently, the authors have proposed techniques that extract terrain information and analyze traversability for off-road navigation of an unmanned robot. In this paper, we examine the use of 3D world models(terrain maps) to classify obstacle and safe terrain for increasing the reliability of the proposed techniques. A world model is divided into several patches and each patch is classified as belonging either to an obstacle or a non-obstacle using three types of metrics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on real terrain maps.

  • 3D terrestrial laser scanners record high precision three-dimensional coordinates of numerous points on an object surface in a short period of time, and is applied to a wide variety of fields including geodesy, and civil engineering, archaeology and architecture, and emergency service and defence, etc. However, most of terrestrial laser scanner utilized in homeland, were imported from foreign country, and also was not authorized formally as the surveying instrument. Therefore, standard test facility to calibrate and perform its evaluation in order to utilize it in a variety of fields is required. This study deals with the test facility of foreign countries for terrestrial laser scanner and suggest the establishment scheme of domestic test facility.

  • The structural performance is degraded in case of embedding the array antenna for reconnaissance and surveillance into the wing skin structures. In this paper, the optimal design for the thickness of composite hat-shaped stiffener which is reinforced embedded array antenna on the simplified composite wing box was conducted. To select the basic shape of hat-shaped stiffener, structural analysis was carry out using the commercial finite element analysis program while changing the web slope and flange length of hat-shaped stiffener. The optimal thickness of the composite hat-shaped stiffeners was determined by using commercial optimization program such as VisualDOC and commercial FEA program with considering stresses and buckling constraints.

  • This paper is a literature review on the following subjects: 1) relationships between porphyry molybdenum and copper systems; 2) hydrothermal environments of molybdenite depositions; 3) genetic significance of molybdenite polyforms; and 4) trace element patterns in molybdenite useful as an exploration guide. The geologic similarities between porphyry molybdenum (e. g. Climax) and porphyry copper (e. g. Bingham) systems exist, and similar techniques can be applied for exploring deposits of either type. Several features suggest that tungsten and tin may form porphyry-like systems (i. e. lowgrade, large tonnage). The clustering of porphyry-like systems in geophysically distinctive batholithic provinces is well documented and provides larger targets for reconnaissance exploration. Geochemical studies suggest that uranium should often occur in close proximity to molybdenum ores in igneous as well as sedimentary environments.

  • Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are getting popular not only as a private usage for the aerial photograph but military usage for the surveillance, reconnaissance and supply missions. For an UAV to successfully achieve these kind of missions, geolocation (localization) must be implied to track an interested target or fly by reference. In this research, we adopted multi-sensor fusion (MSF) algorithm to increase the accuracy of the geolocation and verified the algorithm using two multicopter UAVs. One UAV is equipped with an optical camera, and another UAV is equipped with an optical camera and a laser range finder. Throughout the experiment, we have obtained measurements about a fixed ground target and estimated the target position by a series of coordinate transformations and sequential Kalman filter. The result showed that the MSF has better performance in estimating target location than the case of using single sensor. Moreover, the experimental result implied that multi-sensor geolocation algorithm is able to have further improvements in localization accuracy and feasibility of other complicated applications such as moving target tracking and multiple target tracking.
