  • The objective of this study is to review of environmental assessment of heavy metals derived from various metalliferous mines in Korea. As a results of national wide research for heavy metal contaminations in the vicinity of metalleferous mines, the main contaminants are mine waste materials including tailings. From the materials, toxic elements including As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn can be dispersed into downstream through wind and water. Thus, soils around the mines contain elevated levels of those elements, which are over the guide values for environmental regulation of soils in Korea. Arsenic is one of the most important elements contaminated by mining activities, to a less extent, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. In spite of remediation works for some metal mines by the government, there are still lots of abandoned mines which are necessary for reclamation of mining sites. This study also includes that metal concentrations in soils and tailings can be varied upon various decomposition methods including 0.1N HC1 and aqua regia and sequential extraction scheme, with differences in each element, too. This may be due to geochemical characteristics of the elements, such as solubility, mobility and chemical forms in the geochemical environment. Finally, it is suggested that a certain organization should be runned by Korean government for management of abandoned mines.

  • Nakdong River Plain and its adjoining sea arc unusually covered by very thick soft clay sediments which were caned Pusan clays, sometimes reaching 40-70m. Since early 1990s a large number of geotechnical investigations have been carried out for land reclamation works in the area, including Busan city and its neighboring cities. Nevertheless, geotechnical engineers have paid little attention to studying geological characteristics on the clays, except some researches related to mineralogy, geo-chemistry, benthic foraminiferal fauna etc. The purpose of reserach is the knowledge of the correlation between engineering properties and mineralogy of clay sediments. The correlation analysis carry out multiple regression that have independent variables (Engineering properties) and dependent variables (mineralogy, geochemistry). Engineering properties of clay are correlated with the mineral compositions and geochemical characteristics. The result of the analysis is Wn = -0,6Feldspar + 1.1pH + 0.01TDS + 27.5, Ip = 0.36Clay + 1.44Vermiculite + 0.94clay mineral - 22.118, PI. = 0.005TDS - 0.31Feldspar + 22.43, eo = 0.02Vermiculite - 0.01Quartz + TDS + 0.93, ${\nu}$t = 0.009Quartz - 0.06Conductivity + 1.67, E50 = 1.94Vermicuhte - 0.96Kaohnite -0.53silt + 49.64, SR = -0.25Kaolinite + 1.5pH -2.3Conductivity, Cc = 0.03pH + TDS -0.2, LL = 0.5Clay + 1.3Vermiculite + 5.5Conductivity + 0.8Caly mineral -20.48

  • For the past scores of years, our country has driven its land development toward economic growth as its top priority. ut, as a result that almost all developments been promoted excepting environmental values, in fact, they've incurred some bad environmental effects desirable. Especially, as representative examples, we can raise some issues such as damages of the foreshore or coast wet lands by seas reclamation, and coast corrosion by building up of rivers or coast constructions. Recently, many people started to have great interests in businesses of environment preservation or recycling to minimize effects of these environmental matters. However, before beginning public businesses of non-commercial goods relevant to the seas environments, there seemed to be some limitations that can not accomplish under consideration of environmental sides at the same time while performing economic validities and efficiencies with environmental economic analysis, which is already effective in countries advanced in environment, it's a very meaningful course in that citizens' opinions are being influenced in seas environmental policies for their efficient execution. In this research, after modeling coast corrosion preventives with Jeong-am coast of Gangwon Province, and using Contingent Valuation Method being widely used of value measuring methods on Non-commercial goods, we've appreciated environmental economy's validity of construction works and the scale of environmental economic value of beach restoration work.

  • The 'Silt Pond' is 180 hectares in size and contained ultra soft slurry-like soil varying between 3 to 20 meters in thickness. Soil improvement work in the Silt Pond commenced by installing vertical drains in the mid of 1996, following completion of sand spreading up to +4.0m CD. Prior to soil improvement work in the main area of Silt Pond, experimental tests including laboratory tests with a large diameter consolidation cell and pilot tests were carried out to investigate the deformation behavior of an extremely soft soil. Due to its high compressibility, large strain usually occurred in the initial stage of deformation does not comply with Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory. Taking into consideration experimental test results, the soil improvement works were carried out in main area of Silt Pond containing ultra soft soil. This paper presents the case study on improvement of ultra-soft soil.

  • According to the survey data during the Japanese Occupation Period, the length of South Korea's coastline is about 11,542 km, including the coastlines of land and islands. It will be very expensive and time-consuming to revise/renew accurately this coastline data through site survey, it will cost great money and time. Also, various development projects such as reclamation works on public waters, constructions of ports/harbors, etc. are frequently changing the coastal areas and coastlines, causing many renewal projects on coastal maps. For such reason, appropriate alternatives for site survey are necessary. This paper demonstrate the utilization of RTK-GPS survey data, qualitative analysis and 3D topographic analysis for extracting the change in five coastal areas (Songjeong, Haeundae, Kwanganri, Songdo and Dadaepo). The local experimental areas subjected for this research were limited to five coastal areas near Busan.

  • As the interest in environmental problems increased, the guideline of effluent qualities becomes strict and the amount of sludge produced from the wastewater treatment facilities steeply increased. The revised Korean acts prohibit the direct reclamation of the sludge exhausted in sewage treatment works from 2003, and the ocean dump of sludge will be also prohibited from 2012. Therefore, the sludge must be recycled, incinerated or composted. To properly perform the utilization and disposal operations, the establishment of well-defined procedures for the characterization of sludge by physical, chemical and biological method and setting up of guidelines for different treatment and disposal routes has become necessary. However, there have not been such standardized methods for sludge characterization in Korea. This review analyzes the present status of establishment and problems of sludge characterization method of Korea. Finally, it was proposed total 15 items of standardized characterization methods suitable to our country for proper sludge recycling and disposal, which was based on the more systematic standard methods of Germany (DIN 38414) and those of advanced nations.

  • The soil of the reclaimed tidal land, located in Chogi-ri, Is. Kanghwa, Korea was used in this experiment. The experimented soil samples were collected from 18 sites with its time elapsed after the shore-protection works, soil-depth and the vegetation of saline plants, and at each site samplings were conducted monthly from March through October, 1968, for the purposes of examining the changes of microbial populations for the microbes such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, by using the dilution plate method. The numbers of the microbes in these soils generally showed lower levels comparing with those of other soils. The more time elapsed after the reclamation, the higher numbers of the microbes inhibited the soils. Higher populations were there in the surface soils than in the lower part of the area. The surface soils included comparatively better conditions in aeration and contents of organic matter than in the lower part, and this fact was. same as in general soils. However, not so was this in the case of March, April and October due to the higher soil temperatures in the lows. At the experimental sites where the halophytes such as Salicorniu were grown vigourously, the more densly the plants grew, the higher populations of actinomycetes and fungi were, but not in the case of bacterial population. This means, in this soil with dense Salicornia, it is difficult to obtain good-natured soils in short time without a higher population of bacteria. For the rapid utilization of the land soil, in this view of point, the methods increasing the number of bacteria in the soil are needed as well as the cultivation and harvesting Salicorniu which indicated in the privious paper(Hong, et al., 1969a). According to the results of this experiment, the changes of soil-microbial populations in the reclaimed tidal land soil containing high salinity depend deeply upon the interrelations of many environmental factors such as soil-salinity, soil-components and contents, concentration of organic matters, pH, aeration, and air and soil temperatures, as in the general soils.

  • Tuvalu is a small reef islands country in the Pacific Ocean. Its coastal regions are very much dynamic due to the profound effects of tropical cyclones and sea level rise (SLR). However, research works on coastline dynamics of Tuvalu mainly cover its capital, Funafuti. Therefore, this review summarizes the extent of long-term coastal changes in different islets of Funafuti and on overall Tuvalu. In Funafuti, highly accreting areas are Te Afualiku, Fuafatu, Motugie, and Amatuku, and highly eroding areas are Fuagea and Tefala with the fully disappeared islet of Vasafua after 2005. However, in spite of different causes and supposition of scientists on disappearing these lands the accretion is more dominant than erosion which resulted in 7.3% net increase of land areas of Tuvalu over 117 years till 2015. Severe tropical cyclones mainly caused accretion of land areas by forming coral rubble rampart formation and further reworks and erosion to small sandy islands whereas frequent low-energy cyclones mainly caused erosion. Though, till now severe erosion of coastal areas are not evident by global SLR, islets of Funafuti experienced remarkable shoreline increase as formation of 30-40 m wide rubble rampart formation along 19 km in 1971 by tropical cyclone Bebe and net increase of area of 3.45 ha by tropical cyclone Pam in 2015. In spite of such overall accretion of coastal areas several scientists suspect drowning of its areas in future because of high SLR (~5.1±0.7 mm/year) at Funafuti which supposedly will not work as a breakwater anymore. Thus, protection measures should be taken to prevent coastline erosion as well as land reclamation activities should be done following the global examples.

  • In this study, beneficial use of ocean contaminated sediments were investigated by laboratory and environmental tests, and their prototypes were released. Dredged material from Ulsan port is used for making cement treated samples and lightweight foamed samples, and various engineering tests were performed to identify the compressibility and stress-strain behaviors. Environmental tests were also performed for the beneficial uses. The values of Cu are a little higher than the suggested standard possible for reusing dredged material and equal to the suggested standard alarming for reusing dredged material, which shows environmental harmfulness for the reuse of construction material. In addition, particle size distribution, compaction test, Atterberg limit tests, specific gravity test, and unit weight test were performed to investigate the use of landfill cover materials. The shear strengths of cement treated soils were found to be enough for reclamation works.
