  • This paper describes the ecological structure and function of riparian zone, and their historical changes with land-use. The riparian zone consists of valley floor landform and riparian vegetation. The functions discussed are attenuation of sunlight energy, input of leaves and needles, contribution of woody debris to streams, and retention of flowing material out of transport. These primary functions directly or indirectly influence water and sediment qualities of streams, bars and floodplains, and thereby aquatic biota. Temporal changes in a hydrological system and riparian ecosystem were examined with reference to land-use conversin in order to understand the linkages between these two systems in Toikanbetsu River. The influences of channelization and land-use on discharge of suspended sediment and wetland vegetation was also investigated in Kushiro Marsh. These two examples suggested that the ecological functions of riparian zone have been degraded as flood control and reclamation works have expanded in the past twenty years The author proposes river restoration planning by preserving or creating landscape elements based on the concepts of sustaining physical and ecological linkages.

  • Disposal of casting foundry fly ash generally depends on reclamation up to the present. This is the great loss from a standpoint of saving resources and utilizing industrial wastes. Therefore, a study on the reuse of fly ash as a substitute material for construction is necessary in order to utilize industrial wastes, to reduce cost and improve quality in producing concrete products, and to protect environment from pollution. In this study, methods for the reuse of the casting foundry fly ash, industrial wastes products, as an admixture for concrete are discussed. For this purpose, fly ash was extracted from casting foundry and tests of physical and chemical properties are executed. Also, various characteristics of concrete using fly ash as an admixture are experimented. Finally, the reuse methods for casting foundry fly ash are presented.

  • The settling of the dredged soil may vary with mineral composition, grain size distribution, initial water content and salt concentration of suspension of the site. A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the behaviour of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. Settling mode was divided into four types from the observation of interface and settling curves of clay minerals and marine clay samples, and the relationship charts of salt concentration and the initial water content were established to use in the dredging operation with any salt concentration. The critical initial water content which was defined as a threshold of zone settling and the consolidation settling was varied with salt concentration of water and was proportional to the plasticity of soil in sea water.

  • Large amount of dredged sea soil is produced in southeast seashore region in during harbor maintenance. Disposal of dredged sea soil has become difficult due to the environmental regulation. Therefore, disposal of dredged sea soil method is to landfill. But, the capacity of the landfill limit state and if the size of the dredged sea soil is in the range of silt or clay, it cannot be used as reclamation material because ground subsidence occur. In this study, analyzed the pozzolanic activity of dredged sea soil. Analysis of the results showed a pozzolanic activity of dredged sea soil. In addition, incorporation of heat treated dredged sea soil increase both 28 and 56 day compressive strength of mortar specimen.

  • In order to utilize mass of oyster shells for a partial substitute material for reclamation, we investigate the shear characteristics of dredged sluge mixed with oyster shells. the apparent modulus of elasticity of the this mixture are obtained from the triaxial compression tests and is utilized to characterize the apparent modulus of elastic of the oyster shells by carrying out some numerical analysis based upon the homogenization theory. We got the conclusion by a series of experiment, 1) It is verified that modulus of elasticity of dredged clay is improved by mixing with oyster shells. 2) The homogenization method for deducing apparent modulus of elasticity of oyster shells, which can consider micro-structure of mixed soil, is introduced. The elastic modulus is affected from the skeleton structure of oyster shell. The effect of 49kPa is bigger than that of 98kPa.

  • The settling rate of the dredged soil may vary with mineral composition, grain size distribution, initial con contration and salt concentration of suspension of the site. A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the settling rate characteristics of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. The settling rate of soil mixed with various size of particles depended on clay fraction which showed a inherent flux. A model was developed to predict the particle flux of mixed soil from the clay flux and its applicability was verified.

  • This study examined the actual conditions of quarries. aiming to offer preliminary data to help with restoration efforts of quarries after extracting rock material. The results are as follows. As for the current state of business, a classification of all sites surveyed showed the ratio of ceased operations: ongoing operations: quarries under restoration to be 58:5:37. Classified by the permit area, the ratio of the number of quarries with areas less than $20,000m^2$ (2ha) : between $20,000m^2$ (2ha) and $50,000m^2$ (5ha) : $50,000m^2$ (5ha) or more was 15:60:25. The classification by use of the rocks showed the ratio of construction aggregate (such as civil construction material) : building material : craft material to be 60:28:12. The ratio of quarrying methods of bench cut : slope quarry : vertical quarry wall is 40:18:42. It is indicated that 85% of all quarries surveyed are difficult to reclaim while 15% seem to be easier to restore. Among all surveyed, 34 sites were considered to be extremely difficult to restore. 17 of the 34 sites (50%) were quarry walls almost vertical that have been neglected after extraction. 16 of them (47%) were underground quarries that have left quarry walls deep under the ground. For the remaining 1 site, there doesn't seem to be any need for reclamation as it became totally flat after the extraction.

  • In this study, beneficial use of ocean contaminated sediments were investigated by laboratory and environmental tests, and their prototypes were released. Dredged material from Ulsan port is used for making cement treated samples and lightweight foamed samples, and various engineering tests were performed to identify the compressibility and stress-strain behaviors. Environmental tests were also performed for the beneficial uses. The values of Cu are a little higher than the suggested standard possible for reusing dredged material and equal to the suggested standard alarming for reusing dredged material, which shows environmental harmfulness for the reuse of construction material. In addition, particle size distribution, compaction test, Atterberg limit tests, specific gravity test, and unit weight test were performed to investigate the use of landfill cover materials. The shear strengths of cement treated soils were found to be enough for reclamation works.

  • Recently, several construction projects have been built to create residential area, industrial complex and agricultural land on reclaimed on- and offshore regions. Estimating the quantity of filling materials during reclamation is the most curcial factor of the total construction cost of reclamation project. However, the estimation of loss ratio, defined as the ratio of loss amount to overall dumped amount, mostly depends on the empirical methods and formulae based on the material characteristics due to the lack of sufficient literature about the loss ratio according to hydraulic conditions. In this studies the loss ratio of materials considering flow conditions and material characteristics were examined through hydraulic experiments. A series of hydraulic experiments was conducted using five different hydraulic conditions and two types of materials such as sand and anthracite in a horizontal rectangular flume ($13.0m{\times}5.0m{\times}0.10m$), in which a round type revetment was installed. It is found that the loss ratio generally tends to increase with increasing the particle Froude number regardless of the types of materials. Also, when the flow velocity(u) becomes higher than the critical flow velocity ($u_c$), the loss ratios of sand and anthracite are dramtically increased up to 7.4% and 24.4%, respectively. As a future work, more specific mean velocities will be considered to figure out the loss ratio and more accurate estimation of amount of filling materials will be possible to present with confidence.
