Recently, the intensity and frequency of typhoons have been on the increase due to unusual weather phenomena and climate change. In particular, on September 13, 2003, typhoon MAEMI (0314) caused heavy damage in the provinces of Busan and Gyongnam, but also provided an opportunity to perform a variety of studies on storm surge. According to investigation reports on the damage resulting from typhoon MAEMI, the areas where coastal inundation occurred were located in reclaimed land under coastal development. In this study, through an image data analysis of historic and present day typhoons affecting Masan, we found that the inundation damage areas corresponded to reclaimed lands. Therefore, using the area around Busan, including the southeastern coast of Korea where typhoons lead to an increased storm surge risk, we performed a storm surge/inundation simulation, and examined the inundation effect on reclaimed land due to the intensified typhoons predicted for the future by climate change scenarios.

This study was performed to obtain the basic data analyzing salt movement and desalinization effects, and two different desalinization experiments through leaching and rinsing were carried out, using samples of silt loam soil and silty clay loam soil collected in reclaimed tidelands. The relationships between the electrical conductivity of saturation extract and the electrical conductivity at various dilutions, and the correlations between electrical conductivity, total salt concentration, exchangeable sodium percentage and pH during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands, were analyzed by the statistical method. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: 1.The sample soils used in this study were saline-sodic soils in accordance with the USDA classi- fication system of salt affected soils. 2.The electrical conductivity of saturation extract could be estimated conveniently, using the electrical conductivity of extract from various different soil-water suspensions. 3.The total salt concentration could be expressed in the electrical conductivity, but there was a little difference by soil textures. 4.The regression analysis showed that the relationship between the electrical conductivity of saturation extract and the exchangeable sodium percentage during the desalinization of reclaimed lands could be described by a linear regression equation. 5.The value of pH showed a tendency to increase according as the exchangeable sodium percentage decreased during the desalinization of reclaimed tidelands.

The Republic of Korea reclaimed land to increase its food self-sufficiency rate, but the yield was reduced due to abnormal climate. In this study, it was hypothesized that rapid and continuous monitoring technology could help improve yield. Using the vegetation index (VI) analysis, the drought stress index was calculated and the drought stress for corn grown in Hwaong, Saemangeum, and Yeongsan River reclaimed tidal land was predicted according to drying treatment. The vegetation index of corn did not decrease during the last 20 days of irrigation when soil moisture rapidly decreased, but decreased rapidly during the 20 days after irrigation. The reduction rate of the vegetation index according to the drying treatment was in the order of Saemangeum>Yeongsan River>Hwaong reclaimed tidal land, and normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) decreased by approximately 50% in all reclaimed tidal lands, confirming that drought stress occurred due to the decrease in moisture content of the leaves. In addition, structure pigment chlorophyll index (SIPI) and photochemical reflectance index (PRI), which are calculated based on changes in light use efficiency and carotenoids, were reduced; drought stress caused a decrease in light use efficiency and an increase in carotenoid content. Therefore, vegetation index analysis was confirmed to be effective in evaluating and predicting drought stress in corn growing on reclaimed tidal land corn.
It has been ascertained by many researchers that soil conditions under which the rice plants were cultivated have some effects upon the root system of the rice plants. But, much is not known about the root systems of the rice plants cultivated in the reclaimed lands. The goal of the present investigation is to study morphogenetical effects of reclaimed land on the development of root system of the rice plant.

A two year's field experiment was conducted on newly reclaimed saline tidal lands to measure the effects of sand mulching on salinity of the soils and their relationship to crop performance. Hybrid sorghum cv. Pioneer 931 was grown under different mulching treatments using of medium sand and red earth (Fine loamy, Typic Hapludults). Salinity in the root zone was decreased markedly under soil mulching using of medium sand, especially during the dry season, and it caused a great increase in the root growth and R/T ratio. Seasonal values of electrical conductivity at sand mulching were 6.6 in April and 1.6 mmhos in August, but it was still high with a concentration of 12.7 (April) and 3.8 mmhos (August) in untreated check plot. Sand mulching increased plant growth and the rate of dry matter accumulation. However, treatment of red earth additionally over sand mulching produced lower dry matter yield than those of soil mulching using of medium sand only. Under salt stress sorghum plant showed a decrease in the leaf weight ratio (LWR) and it resulted in a low concentration of crude protein of the plant. Sand mulching enhanced leaf weight ratio and rate of protein synthesis.
This study was intended to investigate injury rates of landscape trees planted in the reclaimed seaside areas and to analyse their causes in planting environment. The planting environment such as soil properties, reclaimed depth of soil, soil hardness, salt consistency of soil, and drainage system were surveyed in 8 reclaimed seaside areas in the middle and southern regions of the country. Injury rates of 42 species, 1,233 trees and growth of branches in 6 species. 130 trees were measured and analysed to fond out salt-resistant trees in the reclaimed lands. The results of the survey are as follows; the average injury rate of evergreen trees was 32%. which was much lower than that of deciduous trees as 52%. The lower injured trees in the 8 reclaimed lands were Pinus thunbergii, Pinus parvinora. Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka', Pinus koraiensis, Acer trifdum, Koelreuteria paniculata and Metasequoia glyptostroboides. The higher injured trees were Acer palmatum, Magnolia kobus. Lagerstroemia indica, Diospiros kaki, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Sorbus commixta, Prunus yedoensis, Pinus desinora, Chaenomeles sinensis, Albizzia julibrissin and Zelkowa serrata. At least the mounding of 1.7m depth of soil is needed from the tidal saline soil to the roots of trees to protect trees from salt injury Roots of trees were found to have infiltrated to 0.77m under the soil of which solidity was over 4.5kg/㎥. And 22 of total 25 soils were acid from pH 3.72 to pH 5.85. Injury rate of trees was much higher when they were detached from the sea, and planted on the drainage.

Recently, the Korean government announced a new development plan for a large-scale greenhouse complex in reclaimed lands. Wind environments of reclaimed land are entirely different from those of inland. Many standard books for ventilation design didn't include qualitative standard for natural ventilation. In this study, natural ventilation rates were analyzed to suggest standard for ventilation design of venlo type greenhouse built on reclaimed land. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation models were designed according to the number of spans, wind conditions and vent openings. The wind profile at a reclaimed land was designed using ESDU (Engineering Sciences Data Unit) code. Using the designed CFD simulation model, ventilation rates were computed using mass flow rate and tracer gas decay method. Additionally computed natural ventilation rates were evaluated by comparing with ventilation requirements. As a result of this study, ventilation rates were decreased with increasing of the number of spans. Ventilation rates were linearly increased with increasing of wind speed. When the wind speed was $1.0\;m{\cdot}s^{-1}$, only side vent was open and wind direction was $45^{\circ}$, homogeneity of ventilation rate at 0~1 m height is the worst. Finally, chart for computing natural ventilation rate was suggested. The chart was expected to be used for establishing standard of ventilation design.
In general, fractal analysis which is based on self-similarity as a basic theory has been mainly used to define the characteristics of complex mathematical figures, however, considering its basic theory, it can be also used to analyze the surface ununiformity of unknown materials. In this study, the soil samples were collected from the reclaimed (remodelled) agricultural fields which mean that the external soil is artificially piled up (mainly up to 1m) on the lands, Naju, Jellanam-do and Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and the conventional agricultural fields, Anseong, Gyeonggi-do and Hwasoon, Jellanam-do, and compared using fractal dimension analysis on the basis of the results of chemical properties. The score of fractal dimension ($D_0$) for organic matter was lower in Hwasoon (1.46) and Naju (1.58) than Anseong (1.86) and Gumi (1.96), and this trend showed similarly in soil pH. On the basis of the results of chemical properties, fine textured-soils (Hwasoon and Naju) and conventional agricultural fields were chemically uniform compared to coarse textured-soils (Anseong and Gumi) and the reclaimed. Therefore, it is required to develop technical methods for integrated soil management to the reclaimed lands.
From 1984 to 1989 reclaimed coastal lands in Choongnam Province of the western coast of Korea were studied for soil texture at three sites(Daeho, Hyundai A and Hyundai B) and for desalination one site(Hyundai B). The soil textures of varied sites in Hyundai A were horizontally similar and composed of 39-40% clay, 40-49% silt and 8-14% sand. But those in Da돼 and Hyundai B differed horizontally in the same area and vertically at the same site. Soil texures of Da돼 were composed of 15-17% clay, 30-45% silt and 40-55% sand and those of Hyundai B were composed of 22-45% clay, 26-49% silt and 17-31% sand. The measured electrical conductivity(EC), which represents whole salt content of the reclaimed soil, decreased year by year. The vertical distribution of the EC changed temporally and spatially in the upper zone above a 50 cm depth but not in The lower zone below a 50 cm depth. The EC valus of the soil were inversely proportional to the magnitued of annual precipitation, evaporation and the numbers of rainy days with r equalling -0.97. But the annual decrease of the EC was directly proportional to climatic factors with r=0.7. Salt in the reclaimed land was leached out by the percolative action of surplus rain water, or moved up by evaporation and carried away by running rain water. The running out of the salt on the soil surface was most efficiently carried out over 10 mm precipitation per day.

It is becoming more important to utilize reclaimed lands in South Korea, due to the increasing competition for its usage among different sectors. However, the high groundwater level and poor permeability are exposing them to deterioration by salinization. Salinization is difficult to predict because the pattern changes according to various characteristics of soil and groundwater. In this study, the capillary rising time was studied by the water content profile in the soil. The prediction equation of soil salinity was developed based on simulation result of the CHEMFLO model. to enable prediction considering various soil water content and groundwater level. The two terms constituting the equation showed the coefficients of determination of 0.9816 and 0.9824, respectively. Using the prediction equation of the study, the surface salinity can be easily predicted from the initial surface salinity and the salinity of the groundwater. In the future, more precise predictions will be possible with the results of studies on the hydraulic characteristics of various reclaimed soils, changes in water content profile by seasonal and climate events.
