  • Fire accidents often happen in large buildings because large buildings are equipped with heavy electrical wiring and piping. When fire is to be occurred in those buildings, it is very dangerous to People and building structures. Therefore, multi-point wireless temperature sensors for large buildings are necessary in order to detect fire in the early time and thus to minimize the loss. A wireless device was composed of the transmitter and receiver. The specification of this device was as follows: 915MHz of transmitted frequency, 4 channels, 9600bps of the transmitted speed, and 10mW of the transmitted power. We confirmed through experiment that the temperature was well sensed and fire location was determined by the 4 channel sensors of the developed sensor system.

  • This paper presents the design and implementation of a multi-mode mobile broadcasting Emergency Warning System (EWS) transmission and reception system which enables the propagation of disaster information using the encoding and transmission, reception and decoding methods specified in diverse mobile broadcasting standards. The implemented system supports global mobile broadcasting standards such as Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB), Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H), Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T), and the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) digital radio standard. The system consists of two key part: an encoding/transmission part and a reception/decoding part. The multi-mode mobile broadcasting EWS encoding and transmission system generates EWS data according to each broadcasting specification. The generated EWS data is then transmitted through a channel interface which meets the commercial broadcasting equipment specification. The receiver system receives and decodes the EWS data on a single hardware platform and can display the results on screen. Verification and conformity testing has been carried out on the implemented system by transmitting emergency data for each mode in real-time and displaying the received information in text on the receiver display.

  • In this study, the capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer(cMUT) was developed based on the previous research results. The cross sectional image of the developed cMUT was characterized. To measure the membrane displacement of the cMUT, the Michelson phase modulation fiber interferometer was constructed. The measured membrane displacement was in good agreement with the result of the finite element analysis. To estimate the ultrasonic wave generated by the cMUT, an ultrasonic system including a pulser, receiver and charge amplifier was used. The cMUT developed in this study shows a good performance and hence will be widely used in the non-contact ultrasonic applications.

  • A output strength is limited according to the frequency used in order to protect other wireless stations from interference caused by radio waves emitted from the low power wireless installations. For receivers, unwanted spurious emission is regulated, and regulations in Korea define that additional spurious emission for receivers in the low power wireless installations under 1GHz should be -54dBm, but no regulations have been established yet for low power wireless installations over 1GHz. It is presently required to set domestic standards for devices over 1GHz on account of the expansion of the communication market and its service.

  • HD padding area is essential redundancy in HD broadcasting. It is possible to use this padding area for the purpose of improving DTV broadcasting services. For utilization of this area, The bit of a service data was converted to black and white $8{\times}8$ block image. Converted block images are compressed with active video and are delivered to a receiver as only DC coefficients in a video stream. video quality is not effected by the proposed method, and service data was perfectly recovered in receiver without errors by using block average and threshold. The proposed utilization of HD essential padding area can possibly overcome the limited transmission stream rate with the bandwidth of HD broadcasting. If service data in transport or video stram were transferred using this padding area, it is possible to improve video quality with expanded video stream rate. Additionally, because the proposed methods are based on well-established standards, it is also useful for world-wide HD broadcasting systems such as ATSC, DVB, and IPTV.

  • The equalizer is the central part of the receiver and its performance significantly affects the overall performance of the system in the mobile communication. A proposed equalizer is composed of the channel estimator, MLSE based on the Viterbi algorithm and GMSK decoder. The approximation of GMSK with QPSK has great impact on the equalizer design, because it allows us to use the existing simple and efficient algorithms for designing optimal QPSK equalizer. In order to estimate efficiently channel, we use a sliding window algorithm based on energy calculation and cross-correlator. And also a tuning scheme is presented in order to improve the equalizer performance. Simulation results indicate that a proposed equalizer meets the GSM standards easily in terms of performance.

  • In this paper, NMEA based Parser programming for Smart-phone was designed at a GPS receiver. The design scheme for Map API and sensor web services was designed according to the Google Map API standards that the position values of NMEA sentences were changed due to XML files. As a result of interfaces between GPS NMEA sentences of Smart-phone and Google Map API, it is possible that real time visual positioning sensor web services about the Google Map mapping from a GPS receiver could be worked on web sever.

  • CDMA has been used widely in communication standards like IS-95, WCDMA, and Korea-Japan Satellite-DMB. Since CDMA has a multiple access interference (MAI) problem, a CDMA receiver requires an interference cancellation scheme like prefilter, a kind of adaptive filter. This paper proposed a memory-based prefilter architecture to reduce the area of a prefilter. An adaptive filter is usually implemented with registers for area reduction, but memory-based architecture leads to a less area for a prefilter due to its functional characteristics. Experimental results show that memory-based architecture reduces the area by around 10% in common prefilters.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a system which is used to encode data using multiple carriers instead of the traditional single carrier system. This method improves the spectral efficiency (optimum use of bandwidth). It also lessens the effect of fading and intersymbol interference (ISI). In 1995, digital audio broadcast (DAB) adopted OFDM as the first standard using OFDM. Later in 1997, it was adopted for digital video broadcast (DVB). Currently, it has been adopted for WiMAX and LTE standards. In this project, a Verilog design is employed to implement an OFDM transmitter (DAC block) and receiver (FFT and ADC block). Generally, OFDM uses FFT and IFFT for modulation and demodulation. In this paper, 16-point FFT decimation-in-frequency (DIF) with the radix-2 algorithm and direct summation method have been analyzed. ADC and DAC in OFDM are used for conversion of the signal from analog to digital or vice-versa has also been analyzed. All the designs are simulated using Verilog on ModelSim simulator. The result generated from the FFT block after Verilog simulation has also been verified with MATLAB.

  • Many studies are undertaken into nuclear power plants (NPPs) in preparation for accidents exceeding design standards. In this paper, we analyze the applicability of various wireless communication technologies as accident countermeasures in different NPP environments. In particular, a commercial wireless communication module (WCM) is investigated by measuring leakage current and packet error rate (PER), which vary depending on the intensity of incident radiation on the module, by testing at a Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation facility. The experimental results show that the WCMs continued to operate after total doses of 940 and 1097 Gy, with PERs of 3.6% and 0.8%, when exposed to irradiation dose rates of 185 and 486 Gy/h, respectively. In short, the lower irradiation dose rate decreased the performance of WCMs more than the higher dose rate. In experiments comparing the two communication protocols of request/response and one-way, the WCMs survived up to 997 and 1177 Gy, with PERs of 2% and 0%, respectively. Since the request/response protocol uses both the transmitter and the receiver, while the one-way protocol uses only the transmitter, then the electronic system on the side of the receiver is more vulnerable to radiation effects. From our experiments, the tested module is expected to be used for design-based accidents (DBAs) of "Category A" type, and has confirmed the possibility of using wireless communication systems in NPPs.
