Consumers earn a number of points for every purchase and then they can exchange a specified number of points for a desired reward in a typical loyalty program. The immediate payoff of their effort given as points is not the real reward they actually care about. It is merely an instrument (or medium) which has no value in itself. In a real world, consumers frequently choose the option with a bigger medium even though the economic value of the option is not changed by the medium. We call it 'medium effect.' In this study we explored if the size of medium affects consumers' preferences. For this we controlled the reward options with three types of medium (small, medium, big) and measured the magnitude of preference difference among the three types of reward options. In addition, we manipulated comparability of reward options with wine and gas discount coupon. We confirmed that choosing one of two wines was easier than that of the two gas coupons. 123 respondents were allocated into three experimental groups. In three experimental grounds, the ratios of the focused reward option's medium to the compared reward option's medium were different. For example, the focused reward option has 10 million points whereas the compared reward option has 10 million points for 1 million won purchase amount in the first group. Then each respondent was asked to choose one of two loyalty programs (focused program vs. compared program) in two different conditions (comparability between reward options. easiness vs. difficulty). To compare the medium effects among the experiment conditions we used chi-squares tests. The empirical results show consumer preference increases and then decreases as reward mile-ages/points given according to purchase amount increase. Additionally, they let us know that comparability of alter natives affects change of consumer preference by reward mileages/points.

Droplet vaporization at various ambient pressures is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional evaporation model in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to account for the real gas effects in the high pressure condition. Non-ideal thermodynamic and transport properties at near critical and supercritical conditions are considered. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. The droplet lifetime increases with increasing pressure at temperature lower than the critical temperature, however, it decreases with increasing pressure at temperature higher than the critical temperature. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the temperature and the pressure go up.
Recently, the application of variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to the high speed direct injection (HSDI) diesel engine has gained more and more interest in automotive industry. A steady state experimental investigation has been undertaken on a 1.5L HSDI diesel engine to verify the benefits of VGT comparing to the standard engine having a waste gate turbocharger (WGT). Specifically, part load performances (e.g., fuel economy and emission) have been investigated under various vane angles of the VGT. The results show that the real exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate as well as the pumping loss is very important to improve break specific fuel consumption (BSFC). It was previously known that the pumping loss only is a main parameter. In addition, the trade-off relationship between BSFC and NOx according to boost pressure, and the decreasing tendency of NOx with increasing real EGR rate have been verified. 1-D numerical analysis also has been performed, and the numerical results are in good agreement with experimental results.
The equation of the particle collection efficiency proposed by Deutsch has been modified through the various experiments to correct the errors caused by the assumptions made for the equation. In order to get an modified Deutsch equation that can be applied to real conditions, a pilot scale electrostatic precipitator is used. The effects of operational variables on the particle collection efficiency are evaluated. Particle resistivity, gas temperature, moisture contents in gas, gas velocity and particle concentration are used as the operational variables. Two different types of coal fly-ash obtained from the fluidized bed combustor and the pulverized coal combustor are used as test particulate to evaluate the effect of the physiochemical and electrical characteristics of the particle on the particle collection efficiency. The experimental results are fitted with the modified Deutsch equation made by Matts-Ohnfeldt and the extended Deutsch equation made by E. C. Potter to evaluate the effect of the particle characteristics and the operation conditions on the particle collection efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator.

The recent Ire incident in an elementary school of Chonan city causes the media focus on the fire safety of residential container buildings. In this study, real fire tests were conducted in this kind of buildings. Combustion products including $O_2,\; CO_2,\;CO,\;NOx,\;SOx,\;HCI,\;HCN$ were measured, and blood samples of lab rats were analyzed in terms of Co-Hb, Glucose, AST(GOT), ALT(GPT), in order to investigate the hazard-reduction effects of employing gas mask protected with filter during the fire emergency of residential container buildings. According to the test results, whether or not employing the filter showed a sheer difference in the toxicity of the fire-induced gases, and then the importance of wearing a gas mask was evidently demonstrated.
Generally, the flow hunting is observed in almost all of the orifice meters but the intensity of the flow hunting is different at each metering system. In order to investigate the relations between pipe diameter and the flow instability or the flow hunting in a real metering system, a one-dimensional pipeline network model was built and analyzed for the examination of flow characteristics and relations to the flow hunting, changing diameters of the meter and the pipes before and after the meter. Finally, the effects of pressuredifference variation and flow hunting following to the variations of the diameters of the meter and the pipes before and after the meter were investigated and the relations were examined as well.

As is shown in the paper, the Koltunov-Rzhanitsyn singular kernel of heredity (when constructing mathematical models of the dynamics problem of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity) adequately describes real mechanical processes, best approximates experimental data for a long period of time. A mathematical model of the problem of the flutter of viscoelastic plates moving in a gas with a high supersonic velocity is given. Using the Bubnov-Galerkin method, discrete models of the problem of the flatter of viscoelastic plates flowed over by supersonic gas flow are obtained. A numerical method is developed to solve nonlinear integro-differential equations (IDE) for the problem of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity with weakly singular kernels. A general computational algorithm and a system of application programs have been developed, which allow one to investigate the nonlinear dynamic problems of the hereditary theory of viscoelasticity with weakly singular kernels. On the basis of the proposed numerical method and algorithm, nonlinear problems of the flutter of viscoelastic plates flowed over in a gas flow at an arbitrary angle are investigated. In a wide range of changes in various parameters of the plate, the critical velocity of the flutter is determined. It is shown that the singularity parameter α affects not only the oscillations of viscoelastic systems, but the critical velocity of the flutter as well.

This paper shows the positivistic approach for analyzing the effect of ICT on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The real-time navigation was selected for the ICT based service in this research, and the CO2 reduction ratios of the optimized routes in the navigation were compared with the reduction ratios of the shortest routes in existing navigations. The results of experiments showed the driving based on the optimized routes has more reduction effects than the driving on the basis of the shortest routes. Also, new evaluation method for GHG emission was suggested by the quantification and monitoring approaches on the basis of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in this paper. The results of this paper can be used as a preliminary research for the effect of ICT on the reduction of GHG emission. The evaluation method which suggested in this paper will be suggested to CDM as the new standard for the reduction of GHG emission in the transportation field as well.
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of plant extracts on methanogenesis and rumen microbial diversity in in vitro. Plant extracts (Artemisia princeps var. Orientalis; Wormwood, Allium sativum for. Pekinense; Garlic, Allium cepa; Onion, Zingiber officinale; Ginger, Citrus unshiu; Mandarin orange, Lonicera japonica; Honeysuckle) were obtained from the Plant Extract Bank at Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The rumen fluid was collected before morning feeding from a fistulated Holstein cow fed timothy and commercial concentrate (TDN; 73.5%, crude protein; 19%, crude fat; 3%, crude fiber; 12%, crude ash; 10%, Ca; 0.8%, P; 1.2%) in the ratio of 3 to 2. The 30 ml of mixture, comprising McDougall buffer and rumen liquor in the ratio of 4 to 1, was dispensed anaerobically into serum bottles containing 0.3 g of timothy substrate and plant extracts (1% of total volume, respectively) filled with $O_2$-free $N_2$ gas and capped with a rubber stopper. The serum bottles were held in a shaking incubator at $39^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Total gas production in all plant extracts was higher (p<0.05) than that of the control, and total gas production of ginger extract was highest (p<0.05). The methane emission was highest (p<0.05) at control, but lowest (p<0.05) at garlic extract which was reduced to about 20% of methane emission (40.2 vs 32.5 ml/g DM). Other plant extracts also resulted in a decrease in methane emissions (wormwood; 8%, onion; 16%, ginger; 16.7%, mandarin orange; 12%, honeysuckle; 12.2%). Total VFAs concentration and pH were not influenced by the addition of plant extracts. Acetate to propionate ratios from garlic and ginger extracts addition samples were lower (p<0.05, 3.36 and 3.38 vs 3.53) than that of the control. Real-time PCR indicted that the ciliate-associated methanogen population in all added plant extracts decreased more than that of the control, while the fibrolytic bacteria population increased. In particular, the F. succinogens community in added wormwood, garlic, mandarin orange and honeysuckle extracts increased more than that of the others. The addition of onion extract increased R. albus diversity, while other extracts did not influence the R. albus community. The R. flavefaciens population in added wormwood and garlic extracts decreased, while other extracts increased its abundance compared to the control. In conclusion, the results indicated that the plant extracts used in the experiment could be promising feed additives to decrease methane gas emission from ruminant animals while improving ruminal fermentation.
Properties of nanoparticles synthesized during gas phase reaction were studied in terms of particle behaviors using real-time particle characterization method. For this study, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized in the chemical vapor condensation process(CVC) and their in-situ measurement of particle formation and particle size distribution was performed by scanning mobility particle sizer(SMPS). As a result, particle behaviors in the CVC reactor were affected by both of number concentration and thermal coagulation, simultaneously. Particularly, growth and agglomeration between nanoparticles followed two different ways of dominances from coagulations by increase of number concentration and sintering effect by increased temperature.
