  • To predict thermal stress independent of uncertain material properties of early age concrete, such as elastic modulus and creep, thermal stress device is used. In order to verify the application of various degree of constraint in the thermal stress device, a series of experiments were performed on mass concrete followed by numerical simulation. The application of various degrees of constraint can be achieved by using constraint frame material with different thermal expansion coefficient, length, and cross sectional area. Temperature development in the real structure has been simulated using temperature and humidity control chamber. The results from experiments and numerical analysis show that the thermal stresses estimated from simulation agree well with the general stress variations in the real structure even though the properties of concrete are uncertain.

  • Lateral Information Propagation Neural Networks (LIPN) is proposed for on-line interpolation. The proposed neural network technique is the real time computation method through the inter-node diffusion. In the network, a node corresponds to a state in the quantized input space. Each node is composed of a processing unit and fixed weights from its neighbor nodes as well as its input terminal. Information propagates among neighbor nodes laterally and inter-node interpolation is achieved. Through several simulation experiments, real time reconstruction of the nonlinear image information is processed. 1-D LIPN hardware has been implemented with general purpose analog ICs to test the interpolation capability of the proposed neural networks. Experiments with static and dynamic signals have been done upon the LIPN hardware.

  • In December 2002, International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the Resolution MSA.137(76) Standards for the Ship Maneuverability. For applying the standards, we have to estimate and evaluate the Maneuverability of a ship at the design stage in difference of trim and displacement as accurate as possible. In this paper, the effect of loading condition on the ship Maneuverability was investigated through 3 methods : numerical simulation, free running model ship and real ship data.. Firstly, We carried out numerical simulation, free running model ship experiments and real ship experiments at ballast condition, half loaded condition and full loaded condition with difference of trim.. Secondly, by comparing these results of 3 methods, we draw out the trend of ship Maneuverability due to the change of trim and displacement of a ship.

  • In this paper, we introduce the concept and construction of a web-based bidirectional remote laboratory system. In this configuration, students build and test circuits using internet at home, and the circuit components and experimental equipments at the school are interconnected following student's design. This means that it is possible to choose components, build circuits, connect experiment equipments, control the equipment. and receive measurement results at home in real-time. Labview and Java are used to control this system efficiently and to provide user-friendly environments. Computer-based function generator, DMM, and oscilloscope are used and switch module is used to change interconnections. It was found that a system adopting computer-based instruments, which include PXI/CompactPCI modules and PC plug-in board, provide better performance than that adopting stand-alone instruments connected with GPIB. It is believed that, if this system is installed, the real experiments, not the virtual experiments based on simulation, can be done at home effectively, resulting in revolutional change in engineering education.

  • The control performances for active re-reflecting wave control suggested in the previous paper have been verified in cases of regular and irregular waves in a real two dimensional wave basin. For regular waves, the control performances are investigated in terms of reflection coefficients, expected amplitudes of propagating waves and wave absorbing capabilities after cessation of wave generation, compared with those of no-control cases. For irregular waves similar verification procedures were adopted. Though there are certain constraints due to the geometrical non-linearity of wave maker and certain nonlinear characteristics due to the near field and gravity waves these experiments show that the control logic could be useful in realizing re-reflecting wave control in conditions of real wave basin.

  • Transformers are the most famous deep learning models that has achieved great success in natural language processing and also showed good performance on computer vision. In this survey, we categorized transformer-based models for computer vision, particularly object detection tasks and perform comprehensive comparative experiments to understand the characteristics of each model. Next, we evaluated the models subdivided into standard transformer, with key point attention, and adding attention with coordinates by performance comparison in terms of object detection accuracy and real-time performance. For performance comparison, we used two metrics: frame per second (FPS) and mean average precision (mAP). Finally, we confirmed the trends and relationships related to the detection and real-time performance of objects in several transformer models using various experiments.

  • Research on walking assistance exoskeletons that provide optimized torque to individuals has been conducted steadily, and these studies aim to help users feel stable when walking and get help that suits their intentions. Because exoskeleton auxiliary efficiency evaluation is based on metabolic cost savings, experiments on real people are needed to evaluate continuously evolving control algorithms. However, experiments with real people always require risks and high costs. Therefore, in this study, we intend to actively utilize human musculoskeletal simulation. First, to improve the accuracy of musculoskeletal models, we propose a body segment mass distribution algorithm using body composition analysis data that reflects body characteristics. Secondly, the efficiency of most exoskeleton torque control algorithms is evaluated as the reduction rate of Metabolic Cost. In this study, we assume that the torque minimizing the Metabolic Cost is the optimal torque and propose a method for obtaining the torque.

  • Film printing companies have many problems during a printing process. Most of all, even an insect or dirt stick to the transparent film may cause severe errors until the end of printing job, which means big economic damage to the company. To prevent some insect-dots or dirt-dots, we have to Inspect the total area of film. However, it is very difficult to inspect the film in real-time due to the high-speed of printing that usually more than 150 m/min. A hardware based approach, for example DSP-based approach can be the one of solution candidates, but the total cost and the complexity increases the very high-level. In this paper, we suggest a software based approach, using MMX technology, to inspect the film in real-time. By Many real-plant experiments, we can see the suggest approach is applicable for the inspection of food packaging film in real-time.

  • When multiple ZigBee wireless personal area networks (WPANs) are in close proximity to each other, contentions and collisions in transmissions will lead to increased packet delays. However, there is no existing study on how delay performance would be affected in a crowded real-life environment where each person walking down a busy street would be wearing a ZigBee WPAN. This letter studies the use of ZigBee WPANs in such a real-life environment for real-time heart beat monitoring. To be pragmatic, we derived a mobility pattern from the analysis of a real-life video trace. Then, we estimated the delay performance from the video trace by combining data collected from ZigBee experiments. The results show that the 300 ms packet delay requirement will not be met for only 11% of the time. When failure occurs, it will last for an average duration of 1.4 s.

  • This paper discusses the composition of the theory of reinforcement learning, which is applied in real-time learning, and evolutionary strategy, which proves its the superiority in the finding of the optimal solution at the off-line learning method. The individuals are reduced in order to learn the evolutionary strategy in real-time, and new method that guarantee the convergence of evolutionary mutations are proposed. It possible to control the control object varied as time changes. As the state value of the control object is generated, applied evolutionary strategy each sampling time because the learning process of an estimation, selection, mutation in real-time. These algorithms can be applied, the people who do not have knowledge about the technical tuning of dynamic systems could design the controller or problems in which the characteristics of the system dynamics are slightly varied as time changes. In the future, studies are needed on the proof of the theory through experiments and the characteristic considerations of the robustness against the outside disturbances.
