The lab-scale BNR processes fed with Municipal Wastewater Before or After Primary Clarifier (MWBPC or MWAPC) were operated to observe the behavior of particle organic matter in terms of nitrification and denitrification efficiency. As a result of the fractionation of the COD from MWBPC or MWAPC using an aerobic respirometric serum bottle reactor, the total mass of biodegradable organic matter from MWBPC is about 52% greater than the mass from MWAPC. Batch reactors were operated to observe the effect of the Particulate Organic Matter (POM) on substrate utilization for denitrification. Although the consumption of POM for denitrification was observed, the increment of the Specific Denitrification Rate (SDNR) was not great. In terms of the effect of POM on nitrification at different HRTs, activate sludge reactors were operated to determine the optimal HRT when MWBPC and MWAPC were fed relatively. All reactors showed a great organic matter removal efficiency. Reactors fed with MWAPC had obtained the nitrification efficiency above 90% when the HRT of 4 hr, at least, was maintained, while reactors fed with MWBPC had same efficiency when the HRT longer than 5 hr was kept. Three parallel $A^2/O$ systems fed with MWBPC or MWAPC relatively were operated to investigate the effects of POM on BNR processes with varying the HRT of an anoxic reactor. For all systems, the efficiency of organic matter removal and denitrification, respectively, was great and about the same. In case of denitrification efficiency, system with MWAPC had 1.5% lower than system with MWBPC at the same HRT of anoxic reactor of 2 hr, and the increasing the HRT of the anoxic reactor by 1 hr in systems fed with MWBPC resulted in a 3.5% increment. The denitrification rate was similar while the consumption of organic matter in systems fed with MWBPC was higher than system fed with MWBPC. It suggests that POM in MWBPC was not be used significantly as a substrate for denitrification in system with the HRT of 3 hr of an anoxic reactor.

Membrane reactors are systems which combine a chemical reactor with a membrane separation process allowing to carry out simultaneously conversion and product separation. The catalyst can be immobilized on the membrane or simply compartmentalized in a reaction space by the membrane. Membrane reactors are today investigated to produce optically pure isomers and/or resolve racemic mixture of enantiomers. The interest towards these systems is due to the increasing demand of enantiomerically pure compounds to be used in the pharmaceutical, food, and agrochemical industries. In fact, enantiomers can have different biological activities, which often influence the efficacy or toxicity of the compound. On the basis of current literature there are basically two schemes on the use of membrane technology to produce enantiomers. In one case, the membrane itseft is intrinsically enantioselective: the membrane is the chiral system which selectively separates the wanted isomer on the basis of its conformation. In the other, a kinetic resolution using an enantiospecific biocatalyst is combined with a membrane separation process; the membrane separates the product from the substrate on the basis of their relative chemical properties (i.e. solubility). This kind of configuration is widely used to carry out kinetic resolutions of low water soluble substrams in biphasic membrane reactors [Giomo, 1995, 1997; Lopez, 1997]. These are systems where enzyme-loaded membranes promote reactions between two separate phases thanks to the properties of enzymes, such as lipases, to catalyse reactions at the org ic/aqueous interface; the two phases are maintained in contact and separated at the membrane level by operating at appropriate transmembrane pressure. A schematic representation of biphasic membrane reactor is shown in figure 1, while an example of enantiospecific reaction and product separation carried out with these systems is reported in figure 2.

Application of bioretention systems in Korea is highly considered due to its minimal space requirements, appropriateness as small landscape areas and good pollutant removal and peak hydraulic flow reduction efficiency. In this study, the efficiency of two lab-scale bioretention types having different physical properties, media configuration and planted with different shrubs and perennials was investigated in reducing heavy metal pollutants in stormwater runoff. Type A bioretention systems were planted with shrubs whereas type B were planted with perennials. Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (A-CL) and Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila (A-AP) respectively were planted in each type A bioretention reactors while Rhododendron indicum linnaeus (B-RL) and Spiraea japonica (B-SJ), respectively were planted in each type B bioretention reactors. Results revealed that the four lab-scale bioretention reactors significantly reduced the influent total suspended load by about 89 to 94% (p<0.01). Type B-RL and B-SJ reactors reduced soluble Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb by 28 to 45% that were 15 to 35% greater than the soluble metal reduction of type A-CL and A-AP reactors, respectively. Among the pollutants, total Cr attained the greatest discharged fraction of 0.52-0.81. Excluding the effect of soil media, total Pb attained the greatest retention fraction in the bioretention systems amounting to 0.15-0.34. Considering the least discharge fraction of heavy metal in the bioretention system, it was observed that the bioretention systems achieved effectual reduction in terms of total Cu, Zn and Pb. These findings were associated with the poor adsorption capacity of the soil used in each bioretention system. The results of this study may be used for estimating the maintenance requirements of bioretention systems.

Extinction limits and combustion temperatures in heat-recirculating excess enthalpy reactors employing both gas-phase and catalytic reaction have been examined previously, with and emphasis Reynolds number (Re) effects and possible application to microscale combustion devices. However, Re is not the only parameter needed to characterize reactor operation. In particular, the use of a fixed reactor size implies that residence time and Re cannot be adjusted independently. To remedy this situation, in this work geometrically similar reactors of different physical sizes were tested with the aim of independently determining the effects of Re and Da. It is found that the difference between catalytic and non-catalytic combustion limits narrow as scale decreases. Moreover, to assess the importance of wall thermal conductivity, reactors of varying wall thickness were studied. From these results the effect of scale on microscale reactor performance and implications for practical microcombustion devices are discussed.
The past two decades were mainly devoted to model validation and computer code verification against global corium experiments, code application to reactor situations, and investigation of the role of melt properties in steam explosion energetics. Corium data were essentially provided by JRC-Ispra in the FARO and KROTOS facilities and by KAERI in the TROI facility. Verification of code applicability to reactor situations was performed essentially in the frame of the international OECD/SERENA programme. The paper makes a synthesis of the findings made during the above-mentioned period and expresses a personal view of the author with respect to the progress made and expected for the resolution of the steam explosion issue for light water reactors.
This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of effluent recycling on the UASB reactor performances at the various organic loading rates and influent substrate concentrations. The organic removal efficiency of the reactors operated with effluent recycle were above 85%. However, the efficiencies of the reactors operated without the recycle were below 40% even though the effort to increase the efficiencies was made by changing the influent substrate concentrations and the organic loading rates, and introducing the effluent recycle at the final stage of the experiment. It was realized that the certain amount of effluent recycling from the start-up stage in UASB reactors seemed to be necessary to provide the effective contact chances between the substrate and granular sludge for better performances of the UASB process.

The operational characteristics of a metal hydride heat pump system are strongly dependent on the amound of hydrogen gas transferred by hydriding and dehydriding reactions between the reactors under dynamic conditions. A new metal hydride heat pump combined with hydrogen compressor was constructed and the dependency of its operating conditions on such as cycle time, amount of hydrogen to be transferred between two reacting metal hydride reactors, operating temperature, and heat transmission characteristics of the reactors was investigated to find the optimum operating efficiency. These conditions were also evaluated in connection with the cooling output and hydrogen compressor connected to the system in order to enhance the total efficiency.
Experiments on deactivation kinetics of immobilized lipase enzyme from Candida cyl-indracea were performed in stirred bath reactor using rice bran oil as the substrate and temperature as the deactivation parameter. The data were fitted In first order deactivation model. The effect of temperature on deactivation rate was represented by Arrhenius equation. Theoretical equations were developed based on pseudo-steady state approximation and Michaelis -Menten rate expression to predict the time course of conversion due to enzyme deactivation and apparent half-life of the immobilized enzyme activity in PFR and CSTH under constant feed rate polity for no diffusion limitation and diffusion limitation of first order. Stability of enzyme in these continuous reactors was predicted and factors affecting the stability were analyzed.

Recently, thorium is receiving increasing attention as an important fertile material for the expanding nuclear power programs around the world. The superior nuclear and physical properties of thorium-based fuels could lead to very low fuel cycle cost and make thorium reactors economically attractive. In addition, the use of thorium in reactors would permit more efficient utilization of low cost uranium reserves and reduction nuclear wastes. In this work, the nuclear characteristics of a new type thorium fueled reactor (Radkowsky Thorium Reactor) consisting seed-blanket assemblies are addressed and compared with those typical assemblies of a PWR (CE type). Also, an assessment on several advantages of thorium fueled reactors is provided. All these results are based on the HELIOS code calculation.

An alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm, a kind of non-parametric regression method, is proposed to generate empirical correlations automatically. The ACE algorithm yields an optimal relationship between a dependent variable and multiple independent variables without any preprocessing and initial assumption on the functional forms. This algorithm is applied to a collection of 12,879 CHF data points for forced convective boiling hi vertical tubes to develop a new critical heat flux (CHF) correlation. The meat root mean square, and maximum errors of our new correlation are -0.558%, 12.5%, and 122.6%, respectively. Our CHF correlation represents the entire set of CHF data with an overall accuracy equivalent to or better than that of three existing correlations.
