  • Recently, application of non-linear load is gradually increased. Non-linear load produces harmonic components of current during the energy conversion transition. Passive filter is used for reducing of harmonics in the user power systems. This filter, which is composed of capacitor and reactor, frequently get out of order by electrical stress. There are voltage and current increase when capacitor and reactor are applied in the user's filter systems. If increased voltage and current is above stipulated values, they have severely an influences on the life of capacitor and reactor. This paper describes that the voltage and current of capacitor used for filter is within the limits of allowable values, but reactor is beyond the limits and reveals spike voltage. Therefore this phenomenon brings about premature fault of reactor and capacitor.

  • The concept of a fusion-driven transmutation reactor based on LAR (Low Aspect Ratio) tokamak as a neutron source is studied based on ITER physics and technology. The radial build of transmutation reactor components are self-consistently determined by coupling the systems analysis with radiation transport analysis and an optimal configuration of a transmutation reactor for aspect ratio, A in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 is found. The performance of a transmutation reactor is investigated and shows that a transmutation reactor with a neutron source producing fusion power less than 150 MW can destroy the transuranic actinides contained in the spent fuels produced from more than two 1 GWe PWRs with production of the fission power being greater than 2 GW.

  • Dimethyl Ether (DME, $CH_3OCH_3$) is the simplest ether and is considered as one of the leading candidates in the quest for a substitute fur petroleum-based fuels. In this work, we analyzed the one-step synthesis of DME in a shell and tube type fixed bed reactor and carried out a simulation with a one-dimensional, steady state model of a heterogeneous catalyst bed, while taking into consideration the heat and mass transfer between the catalyst pellets and reactants gas and the effectiveness factor of the catalysts, together with the reactor cooling through the reactor tube wall. The reactor simulation was carried out under steady state condition and we compared the simulation results with the experimental data obtained from operations of a pilot-scale reactor and found good agreement between them.

  • Induction motor is the most widely used to obtain the driving force in the industrial site. Induction motor generates a high current at startup. Most of starting currents are often more than five times of rated current. This high starting current can cause problems such as the voltage drop in the system. In order to solve these problems, if the motor capacity is large, generally we use reactor starting method rather than direct on line starting method. When a high startup current passes through reactor, reactor can serve as a nonlinear elements. In this study, we analyzed that the current, torque and power of the induction motor are different from the change of linear and nonlinear components of the reactor magnetic field.

  • The realistic cases causing severe core damage should be analyzed and arranged systematically for preparing an accident management of the specific nuclear power plant. The objective of this paper is to establish basic technical information for reactor safety and reactor building integrity management strategies in CANDU reactor severe accident. For the development of severe accident management strategies, plant specific features and behaviors must be studied by detailed analysis works. This analysis scope will serve to cover overall methods and analyzing results to understand the reactor building integrity status in the most likely severe accident sequences that could occur at CANDU reactor. Also analysis results could help prevent or mitigate severe accidents for the identification of any plant specific vulnerabilities to severe accidents using the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) quantified results.

  • The operating temperature of VHTR components is much higher than that of conventional PWR due to high core outlet temperature of VHTR. Material requirements and technical issues of VHTR reactor components which are mainly dominated by high temperature service condition were discussed. The codification effort for high temperature material and design methodology are explained. The design class for VHTR components are classified as class A or B according to the recent ASME high temperature reactor design code. A separation of thermal boundary and pressure boundary is used for VHTR components as an elevated design solution. Key design characteristics for reactor pressure vessel, control rod, reactor internals, graphite reflector, circulator and intermediate heat exchanger were analysed. Thermo-mechanical analysis of the process heat exchanger, which was manufactured for test, is presented as an analysis example.

  • An efficient packed-bed type biofilm reactor charged with immobilized phototrophs was developed to treat organic wastewater at an extremely high volumetric loading rate. The packed bed reactor (PBR) charged with porous ceramic beads was superior to a fluidized-bed reactor suspended with activated carbon powders in terms of many aspects such as BOD removal efficiency, operational stability, and overall economics. For wastewater with BOD concentration as high as 20, 000mg/l, the BOD removal efficiency was maintained above 90% when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was longer than 1 day. The allowable volumetric BOD loading rate of this reactor (20gBOD/l day) is more than ten-folds higher than that of an ordinary activated sludge method. The behaviour of the reactor was represented well by a Monod type kinetic equation with a maximum specific BOD loading rate(P) of 22.2gBOD/l day and a half saturation constant(K$_{s}$) of 1, 750 mgBOD/l.

  • To investigate the behavior of reaction products with the reactor heights by the change of upflow velocity, a typical real height USAB reactor was built and experiment was conducted. The flow in the reactor by the upflow velocity was flug flow at low upflow velocity but the flow was completely mixed flow at high upflow velocity. Therefore, the concentration of pH, alkalinity and volatile acid was not so different with reactor heights at high upflow velocity. And comparing with low upflow velocity, the distribution of microorganisms with reactor heights did not show big different at high upflow velocity. The removal efficiency of organic compounds depended on the distribution of microorganisms and it was low at high upflow velocity. It is concluded that the operation of reactor with proper upflow velocity to improve contact with organic compounds and microorganisms is recommended.

  • A mathematical model is developed to represent the batch reactor for free radical polymerization of PMMA The model is validated by comparing the simulation result with the experimental data. A computational scheme is proposed to determine the trajectory of the reactor temperature that will produce polymer product having the desired molecular weight distribution. For this instantaneous number average chain length and polydispersity are introduced to calculate the reactor temperature. The former is assumed to be a second order polynomial of the sum of the living and dead polymer concentrations. Various reactor temperature, trajectories are observed depending on the reactor conditions and prescribed molecular weight distributions. Fuzzy and PID control algorithms are applied to trace the reactor temperature trajectory. While the PID control gives rise to an overshoot when the trajectory changes its direction, the fuzzy controller yields a more satisfactory performance because it secures information on the trajectory pattern.
