  • Measurement of network traffic have shown that the self-similarity is a ubiquitous phenomenon spanning across diverse network environments. In previous work, we have explored the feasibility of exploiting the long-range correlation structure in a self-similar traffic for the congestion control. we show that a multiple time scale TCP endows the underlying feedback control with proactivity by bridging the uncertainty gap associated with reactive controls which is exacerbated by the high delay-bandwidth product in broadband wide area networks. Third, we investigate the influence of the three traffic control dimensions-tracking ability, connection duration, and fairness-on performance.

  • Highly crystalline 5H-polytypic form of sp3-bonded boron nitride (BN) was grown by pulsed-laser-vaporization of BN, where synchronous reactive-plasma packets assisted the crystal growth in the vapor phase. The structure of the product crystallites (˙5 micrometers) was confirmed by using transmission electron diffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy. This material proved to have a sharp and dominant band at 225 nm by cathode luminescence at room temperatures and corresponding monochromatic images revealed that they uniformly emitted the ultraviolet light. Considering that cubic BN has already been doped as p- and n- type semiconductors, this material may be applied to the light-emitting devices working at almost the deepest limit of the UV region that is functional without vacuum.

  • Photochemical reduction of 1,2-bispyrazylethylene,a stilbene like heterocompound, was studied in hydrogen donating solvents and reduction product, 1, 2-bispyrazylethane, was identified. Salt and solvent effects on the quantum yields of the reduction, sensitization and quenching studies showed that the reactive state for the photochemical reduction of the compound is $(n,{\pi}^*)^1$ state rather than $({\pi},{\pi}^*)^1$ state.

  • Measurement of network traffic have shown that the self-similarity is a ubiquitous phenomenon spanning across diverse network environments. In previous work, we have explored the feasibility of exploiting the long-range correlation structure in a self-similar traffic for the congestion control. We have advanced the framework of the multiple time scale congestion control and showed its effectiveness at enhancing performance for the rate-based feedback control. Our contribution is threefold. First, we define a modular extension of the TCP-a function called with a simple interface-that applies to various flavours of the TCP-e.g., Tahoe, Reno, Vegas and show that it significantly improves performance. Second, we show that a multiple time scale TCP endows the underlying feedback control with proactivity by bridging the uncertainty gap associated with reactive controls which is exacerbated by the high delay-bandwidth product in broadband wide area networks. Third, we investigate the influence of the three traffic control dimensions-tracking ability, connection duration, and fairness-on performance.

  • It is well known that excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to oxidative stress, loss of cell function, and ultimately apoptosis or necrosis. To search for natural antioxidants able to modulate cellular oxidative stress, we investigated the protective effect of ethanol extracts of 17 medicinal plants selected from the preliminary antioxidant screening on tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH)-induced oxidative stress in human keratinocytes. The result showed that extracts of the four plants, Distylium racemosum, Astilbe chinensis, Cercis chinensis and Sapium japonicum, exhibited significant cytoprotective activity (over 50% protection) against t-BuOOH-induced cellular injury.

  • UV photolysis of the titled polysilane (Me3Si)3SiMe (I) in the presence of a trapping agent of 2-propenol has been performed to investigate the interaction of short-lived silicon species formed from the photolysis of I with 2-propenol. Product studies show that the Me(Me3Si)Si: (II) and (Me3Si)3Si${\cdot}$(III) are primarily formed as the major reactive species which saturate their valencies via O-H insertion and H-abstraction, respectively. Some products are unstable toward further secondary reaction such as photodissociation and intermolecular reaction. The PM3 semiempirical calculations are performed to deduce the energetics of the photoinduced chemical reactions of I with the substrate.

  • 1,1-Dichloro-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopenta- 2,4-diene was synthesized through the reaction of $SiCl_4$ with 1,4-dilithiotetraphenylbutadiene in 50% yield. From the reaction of this silole with metal, an air sensitive red-brownish solid was obtained. Treatment of this reaction product with $CH_3I\; and\; Me_3SiCl$ gave 1,1-dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopenta- 2,4-diene and 1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopenta-2,4-diene, respectively. From these results, the formation of reactive 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopenta-2,4-dienyl dianion was confirmed.

  • Oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs) has been implicated in a variety of human diseases including cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and neurodegenerative disorders. Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$), a representative ROI which is produced during the cellular redox process, can cause cell death via apoptosis and/or necrosis depending on its concentrations. l5-Deoxy-$D^{12, 14}$ prostaglandin $J_2$ (15d-$PGJ_2$), a dehydration product of prostaglandin $D_2$, has been reportd to possess a number of biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidative properties. • Over production of methylglyoxal (MGO) a highly reactive dicarbonyl compound, has been associated in progressive diabetes with vascular complication. Therefore, we investigated whether hot water extract of Loliolus beka meat (LBM-HWE) presents a preserve effect against MGO-induced cellular damage in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The LBM-HWE extract showed to inhibit MGO-induced cytotoxicity. Additionally, the LBM-HWE reduced mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and reduced MGO-induced advanced glycation end product (AGEs) formation. Furthermore, LBM-HWE induced glyoxalase-1 mRNA expression and reduced MGO-induced carbonyl protein formation in HUVECs. The results implicate that LBM-HWE has protective ability against MGO-induced HUVECs toxicity by preventing AGEs formation. In conclusion, LBM-HWE could be used as a potential treatment material for the prevention of vascular complications of diabetes.
