Wireless signal transmission is influenced by environmental effects. These effects have also been challenging for Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) in real-time communication. More specifically, in an urban environment, with high mobility among vehicles, a vehicle's status from the transmitter can instantly trigger from line of sight to non-line of sight, which may cause loss of real-time communication. In order to overcome this, a deterministic signal propagation model is required, which has less complexity and more feasibility of implementation. Hence, we propose a realistic path loss model which adopts ray tracing technique for VANET in a grid urban environment with less computational complexity. To evaluate the model, it is applied to a vehicular simulation scenario. The results obtained are compared with different path loss models in the same scenario based on path loss value and application layer performance analysis. The proposed path loss model provides higher loss value in dB compared to other models. Nevertheless, the performance of vehicle-vehicle communication, which is evaluated by the packet delivery ratio with different vehicle transmitter density verifies improvement in real-time vehicle-vehicle communication. In conclusion, we present a realistic path loss model that improves vehicle-vehicle wireless real-time communication in the grid urban environment.

In this paper, we predict a maximum electric field strength of WCDMA base station using a pilot channel in a code domain. In order to verify the feasibility of our method, we compare our predicted value on a self-designed test base station with a general electric field strength measurement value at a full-traffic load condition and with a calculated value by a ray-tracing technique. Predicted results show above 90 % agreement with the general measurement and calculation values. We also show that our prediction method can be applied to electric field measurement on a real operating base station. Therefore, it is concluded that our prediction method be an effective method to measure a maximum electric field strength in a base station inspection test.
A new horizontal neutron reflectometer has been designed and now under construction at the HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, in Daejon, Korea. We performed simulations of neutron ray-tracing to evaluate the performance of all of the optical components of the instrument with a Monte Carlo technique using McStas. The feasible wavelength of the incident neutron beam is $2.5{\AA}$. It produces a q-range up to $0.126{\AA}^{-1}$ with a supermirror as a deflector. Our studies showed improvement of the performance of the guide tube and monochromators. Although the performance is limited in q-range, it promises to be the first reflectometer in Korea for the study of free surfaces, which is currently in demand.

Microwave(M/W) bands, though having great demand in wireless services, have been used mostly for long distance communications. As a result, the studies on their mobile radio models have been made less than on VHF/UHF. However, as the mobile communication services with M/W bands have been increasing, the development of a more accurate prediction model of the mobile radio environments has been demanded. The development of a reliable radio prediction model in the mobile radio environments requires the measurement and analysis of the characteristics of the radio waves according to reflection, diffraction and scattering of radio signals in various mobile radio environments. The proposed 8 GHz band radio prediction models have 2 different categories: (1) LOS model and (2) non-LOS model. The LOS model predicts signal strength using the analytic result with measured pathless exponents for the waves direct and reflected by ground and buildings, and the non-LOS model suggests a prediction model of received power by calculating the signal variations after diffraction.

The net effect of the emitter orientation, Mie scatters, and pillow lenses on the outcoupling efficiency (OCE) of a bottom-emitting OLED having an internal photonic crystal layer was investigated by a combined optical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) and the ray-tracing technique. The simulation showed that when the emitter orientation was horizontal with respect to the OLED surface, the OCE could be increased by 54% when a photonic crystal layer was employed, while it could be improved by 86% under optimized conditions of Mie scatters and pillow lenses applied to the glass substrate. The peculiar intensity distribution of the OLED, caused by the periodic lattice structure of the photonic crystal layer, could be ameliorated by inserting Mie scatters into the glass substrate. This study suggests that conventional outcoupling structures combined with control of the emitter orientation could improve the OCE substantially.
In the remote sensing researches, the reflected bright source such as snow, cloud have effects on the image quality of wanted signal. Even though those signal from bright source are adjusted in corresponding pixel level with atmospheric correction algorithm or radiometric correction, those can be problem to the nearby signal as one of the stray light source. Especially, in the step and stare observational method which makes one mosaic image with several snap shots, one of target area can affect next to the other snap shot each other. Presented in this paper focused on the stray light analysis from unwanted reflected bright source for geostationary ocean color sensor. The stray light effect for total 16 slot images each other were performed according to 8 band filters. For the realistic simulation, we constructed system modeling with integrated ray tracing technique which realizes the same space time in the remote sensing observation among the Sun, the Earth, and the satellite. Computed stray light effect in the results of paper demonstrates the distinguishable radiance value at the specific time and space.
The optical performance of LLF(Lenticular Lens Film)-based backlight was studied by using optical simulation as functions of the aspect ratio and the refractive index of lenticular lenses. In order to perform reliable simulation, the BSDF(bi-directional scattering distribution function) of the scattering dots on the bottom surface of the light guide plate was obtained as a superposition of the Lambertian and the elliptic Gaussian distribution components by comparing the experimental results and the simulation for the luminance distribution on the light guide. Based on this approach, an appropriate BSDF of the scattering dots of the light guide was constructed. The resultant values of the optimized aspect ratio and the refractive were found to be 1.25 and 1.65, respectively. In spite of the hybrid aspects of LLF incorporating both diffusing and collimating functions, the optical performance, in particular the on-axis luminance of LLF-based backlight was inferior by about 20% compared to that of conventional backlights adopting one prism film. However, the combination of two lenticular lens films resulted in comparable luminance gain as well as smooth decrease in the luminance with the viewing angle without exhibiting any side lobes.

In this paper, we propose diffraction-based sound control method to improve sound immersion in a virtual environment. The proposed technique can express the wave and flow of sound in a physical environment and a pattern similar to diffraction in real-time. Our approach determines whether there is an obstacle from the location of the sound source and then calculates the position of the new sound reflected and diffracted by the obstacle. Based on ray tracing, it determines whether or not it collides with an obstacle, and predicts the sound level of the agent behind the obstacle by using the vector reflected and refraction by the collision. In this process, the sound attenuation according to the distance/material is modeled by attenuating the size of the sound according to the number of reflected/refracted rays. As a result, the diffraction pattern expressed in the physics-based approach was expressed in real time, and it shows that the diffraction pattern also changes as the position of the obstacle is changed, thereby showing the result of naturally spreading the size of the sound. The proposed method restores the diffusion and diffraction characteristics of sound expressed in real life almost similarly.

There has been a growing interest in thick composite materials especially for primary structures. Fiber waviness is one of the manufacturing defects frequently encountered in thick composite structures and affects the mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength significantly. Therefore, nondestructive evaluation technique that can detect fiber waviness of thick composite is very important for the integrity of structures. In this study, efforts were made to understand ultrasonic wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness by adopting the ray and plane wave theories. Both theoretical and experimental investigations were conducted to understand the wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness. The experiments were conducted on specially fabricated thick composite specimens with various degrees of uniform fiber waviness using the conventional through-transmission method to verify the predicted results. The experimental results showed good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
There have been always some difficulties in target setting and conditioning of acoustic performances of the Korean traditional music hall due mainly to the lack of the information on the sound radiation characteristics of Korean musical sources. In this study, the radiation characteristics of four typical Korean traditional musical sources were investigated in precision and their usage was demonstrated: The selected musical sources were Gayageum (string), Daegeum (woodwind), Jango (drum), and Pansori Chang (vocal performance). Each sound source was located at the center of a semi-anechoic chamber and the directivity was determined by the measured sound pressure levels in every 10° angular position, for both vertical and horizontal directions. The directivity pattern of Gayageum varies from a uniform to a complex pattern having many side lobes with the increase of frequency. The main radiation of Daegeum is toward the upward direction. The directivity pattern of Jango is clearly a side-oriented one and the left direction intensity is sharper than its right side at low frequencies. For the Chang, the directivity pattern change from a uniform pattern to a frontally directed one as the frequency goes high. Measured directional and spectral characteristics of traditional Korean music sources were implemented into the computation of architectural acoustic measures for the Busan National Korean Traditional Music Hall which is under construction. Parameters such as RT, SPL, C80, IE, STI were calculated at two receiver positions by using a ray tracing technique. Significant differences in the acoustic measures at receiver positions were observed between the results in using the omni-directional source and the directional one. It is thought that the suggested source data and design method can be used as a basic reference in the future acoustic design of performance halls for the Korean traditional music.
