  • The Cu55Ti45 system was effectively mechanically-alloyed using a pulverizer. Noncrystallinities of the powders were characterized by TEM, X-ray and DSC. The amorphous powders were consolidated without losing their noncrystallinities. The consolidating conditions keeping a non-crystalline were obtained by building a TTT diagram of the amorphous powders. The microhardness of the crystallite and bulk amorphous alloys are also compared.

  • Abell 2537 has been regarded as one of relaxed galaxy clusters because the X-ray emission is regular and symmetric, while there is also evidence to the contrary that the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) is offset from the velocity center. To investigate the dynamical state of A2537 we obtain the redshift information of cluster galaxy candidates using Hectospec mounted on the MMT 6.5 m and compile those in the literature. The velocity distribution of member galaxies appears bimodal, with the main peak including the BCG and a secondary peak at velocity difference ~2000 km s-1. Based on the three-dimensional analysis and statistical tests we conclude that A2537 has at least two substructures and is not fully relaxed from a merger near the line-of-sight. We discuss more about the dynamical state of A2537 based on the color-magnitude diagram and X-ray scaling relation.

  • To provide further information for reutilization of the waste wood obtained after cultivating oak mushroom in Kangwon-do, the crystal structures of the waste wood were investigated and compared to those of normal woods by a series of x-ray diffraction analysis. The results obtained are as follows: 1. An x-ray diffraction diagram of cultivated wood for 5 years was same as that of typical cellulose with some orientation of cellulose crystallites, but that of cultivated wood for 8 years a random. 2. Crystallinity indices in normal and cultivated woods for 5 years ranged from 57% to 60%. In the cultivated wood for 8 years, however, the value showed about 40%. 3. Crystallite widths of cultivated woods for 5 years and for 8 years were 3 nm and 2.5 nm, respectively. 4. Intensity ratios of equatorial and meridional layers did not show any significant differences. From the above results, it is clear that the waste wood obtained after cultivating oak mush room for 5 years showed basically same crystal structures with normal wood. Therefore, we think that the waste wood may be used available for cellulosic material instead of normal wood.

  • In X-ray stress measurements for uni-directionally deformed surfaces such as grinding, a strongly curved $sin^2{\Psi} diagram, so called $\Psi-splitter, has been observed recently. It has been known that this is caused by the residual shear stress induced in the deformed layer by external forces. In this case it is necessary to consider this enough for ceramics and composite materials with tri-axial stress analysis. However, sufficient studies have not been done about the tri-axial stress analysis of the macro stress and micro. stress on each phase of the composite materials. The result of obtaining is as follows. 1. $\Psi-splitter does not appear in the vertical direction though $\Psi-splitter appears in grinding direction in WC-Co cemented carbides. The reversal of $\Psi-splitter to each phase does not appear. 2. $\Psi-splitter caused in WC-Co cemented carbides has a close relation in dislocation which accumulates in WC phase and phase transformation caused in Co phase. 3. The residual stress on the surface of grinding of each phase is in the state of the compression stress.

  • Ricci et al. (2017, Nature, 549, 488) discovered a lack of high accretion rate, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the hard X-ray selected Swift/BAT local AGN survey. This was interpreted as radiative pressure driven AGN feedback clearing its immediate vicinity composed of dusty gas (having an effectively low Eddington limit in the order of 0.01-0.1), and governing the level of nuclear obscuration. As we find Eddington-limited accretion and high extinction values among obscured, luminous AGN (quasars) however, it may be that the local X-ray AGN and the distant quasars undergo different feedback mechanisms in clearing their surroundings. In this study, we simply compare the obscuring column density and Eddington ratio values for quasars selected by various methods, including X-ray obscured, optically blue, infrared red/luminous, and submillimeter bright AGN. We find obscured quasars lying on the column density-Eddington ratio diagram previously unoccupied by Ricci et al., suggesting that radiative pressure is insufficient to clear its dusty structure at high luminosity, or that the dust in obscured quasars are more extended than the low luminosity counterparts to become fully transparent. We discuss alternative feedback scenarios that may be more relevant for obscured quasars.

  • In an attempt to further clarify the effect of X·irradiation on the activity of surfactant in rabbits, X-ray in dose of 900r was irradiated to the lung tissues of rabbits in vitro. Tension-area diagram of the lung extract was recorded automatically by a modified Langmuir-Wilhelmy balance with a synchronized recording system designed in this department. The surface tension of the lung extract was measured at 1,3,5,24 and 48 hours post-irradiation, and the results were compared with the non·irradiated normal group. The result$ thus obtained are summarized as follows: I The maximal surface tension, minimal surface tension, width of the tension·area diagram at the surface area of 40% in the lung extract and stability index of the normal rabbit long extract were 40.73 dynes/cm, 8.96 dynes/cm, 20.71 dynes/cm and 1.28, respectively. II. When 900r of X-ray was irradiated to the lung in vitro, 1) The maximal and minimal surface tensions did not differ noticeably from the normal at 1,3, and 5 post-irradiation hours, but the minimal surface tension increased significantly at 24 and 48 hours Post-irradiation. 2) The width of the tension area at the surface area of 40% showed a tendency of decrease throughout the experiment. 3) The stability index showed no significant change at 1,3 and 5 post-irradiation hours, but at 24 and 48 hours post-irradiation a significant decrease was observed comparing with the control. III. Activity of surfactant was significantly depressed by X·irradiation in vitro especially at 24 and 48 hours post-irradiation.

  • Carbide precipitation and dissolution behavior at various temperatures during heat treatment has been studied in STD11 cold working die steel through confocal scanning laser microscopy; dilatometry; and X-ray diffraction analysis. The equilibrium phase diagram and phase fractions with temperature were calculated using a FactSage program. Confocal laser microscopic observation revealed that ${\alpha}$ to ${\gamma}$ transformation temperature is near $800^{\circ}C$; M7C3 carbides melt at $1245^{\circ}C$; and the melting temperature of STD11 is near $1370^{\circ}C$. XRD results indicated that the M23C6 carbides dissolve in the matrix if austenitized at over $1030^{\circ}C$; while the M7C3 carbides remain up to $1200^{\circ}C$ although their amount decreases. The calculated equilibrium phase diagram showed good agreement with experimental results on carbide dissolution and phase transformation temperatures.

  • The most widely excavated iron artifacts used as weapons or farm tools from central southern regions of Korea were subjects of non-metallic inclusion analysis through metallographic examination, microhardness measurement, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Through metallographic interpretation and study of the analyzed results, the steel manufacturing and iron smelting using heat processing in the iron artifacts excavated from the central southern region of the ancient Korean peninsula was studied, and the analysis of the non-metallic inclusions mixed within the metallic structures was interpreted as the ternary phase diagram of the oxide to infer the type of iron ores for the iron products and the temperature of the furnace used to smelt them. Most of the ancient forged iron artifacts showed $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ with high $SiO_2$ contents and relatively low $Al_2O_3$ contents for iron ore, indicating t hat for $Al_2O_3$ below 5%, it is presumed that magnetic iron ores were reduced to bloom iron (sponge iron) with direct-reduction process for production. The temperature for extraction of wustite for $Al_2O_3$ below 1% was found to be $1,020{\sim}1,050^{\circ}C$. Considering the oxide ternary constitutional diagram of glassy inclusions, the steel-manufacturing temperature was presumed to have been near $1,150{\sim}1,280^{\circ}C$ in most cases, and minimum melting temperature of casting iron part excavated in Daeseong-ri. Gyeonggi was near $1,400^{\circ}C$, and it is thought that hypoeutectic cast iron of about 2.3% carbon was casted and fragility of cast iron was improved by decarburizing in solid state.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the types of teacher and student's concept on ray-tracing and spectrum in middle school. This study suggest key-concepts that is most important to "Light" unit in the seven grades: the ray-tracing and the spectrum. We examined the types of teacher and student's concept. We selected 10 teacher and 328 students who had learned by 10 teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The problems were composed with the question item regarding all ray-tracing or the spectrum. From the analysis, it was found that the types of teacher and student's concept on ray-tracing and spectrum is different. The most of teacher and student didn't understand the basic principle of image formation. In case of context about formation of image by reflection and refraction, because they don't know ray-tracing, they do not try to find the position of the image by drawing two rays. Most of them used one ray comes from the one position of the object and indicated the position of image by memorized position. Also almost there was not a case which uses a ray tracing accurately. In the case of understanding color, they didn't understand the concept of color(or spectrum) and teachers represented to students the color phenomena without explanation of principles. In the result teachers and students would learn color science by rote.
