Fast Intra Mode Selection Algorithm for H.264/AVC Using Constraints of Frequency Characteristics (주파수 특성의 제약 조건들을 이용한 H.264/AVC를 위한 고속 화면 내 모드 선택 방법)

  • H.264/AVC video coding standard enables a considerably higher improvement in coding efficiency compared with previous standards such as MPEG-2, H.263 and MPEG-4. To achieve this, for each macro-block in H.264/AVC, Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) technique is employed to select the best motion vector, reference frame, and macro-block mode. As a result, computational complexity is increased significantly whereas RDO achieve higher improvement. This paper presents fast intra mode selection algorithm based on constraints of frequency characteristics which are derived from intra coding modes of H.264/AVC. First of all, we observe the features of each intra mode through the frequency analysis of image. And then proposed Frequency Error Costs (FECs) are calculated to select the best mode which has minimum cost. Computational complexity is considerably reduced because rate-distortion costs only calculate the candidate modes which are set of best mode and its neighbouring two modes. Experimental results show that proposed algorithm reduces the complexity dramatically maintaining the rate-distortion performance compared with H.264/AVC reference software.

Rate-distortion based image segmentation using recursive merging (반복적 병합을 이용한 율왜곡 기반 영상 분할)

  • In this paper, a rate-distortion based image segmentation algorithm is presented using a recursive merging with region adjacency graph (RAG). In the method, the dissimilarity between a pair of adjacent regions is represented as a Lagrangian cost function considered in rate-distortion sense. Lagrangian multiplier is estimated in each merging step, a pair of adjacent regions whose cost is minimal is searched and then the pair of regions are merged into a new region. The merging step is recursively performed until some termination criterion is reached. The proposed method thus is suitable for region-based coding or segmented-based coding. Experiment results for 256x256 Lena show that segmented-based coding using the proposed method yields PSNR improvement of about 2.5 - 3.5 dB. 0.8 -1.0 dB. 0.3 -0.6 dB over mean-difference-based method. distortion-based method, and JPEG, respectively.

  • Recently, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) is receiving a lot of attention as one of the low complexity video encoding techniques suitable for various applications with computation-limited and/or power-limited environment, and is being actively studied for improving the coding efficiency. This paper proposes a rate-distortion based selective block encoding scheme. First, the motion information is obtained in the process of generating side information at decoder and received through the feedback channel, and then, based on this information, the proposed method performs a selective block encoding based on rate-distortion optimization. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed scheme reaches up to 2.2 dB PSNR gain over the existing scheme. Moreover, it is shown that the complexity can be reduced by encoding parts of region considering rate-distortion cost.

Rate control to reduce bitrate fluctuation on HEVC

  • This paper proposes a frame-level rate control algorithm for low delay video applications to reduce the fluctuations in the bitrate. The proposed algorithm minimizes the bitrate fluctuations in two ways with minimal coding loss. First, the proposed rate control applies R-Q model to all frames including the first frame of every group of pictures (GOP) except for the first one of a sequence. Conventional rate control algorithms do not use any R-Q models for the first frame of each GOP and do not estimate the generated-bit. An unexpected output rate result from the first frame affects the remainder of the pictures in the rate control. Second, a rate-distortion (R-D) cost is calculated regardless of the hierarchical coding structure for low bitrate fluctuations because the hierarchical coding structure controls the output bitrate in rate distortion optimization (RDO) process. The experimental results show that the average variance of per-frame bits with the proposed algorithm can reduce by approximately 33.8% with a delta peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) degradation of 1.4dB for a "low-delay B" coding structure and by approximately 35.7% with a delta-PSNR degradation of 1.3dB for a "low-delay P" coding structure, compared to HM 8.0 rate control.

Fast Inter Mode Decision Algorithm Based on Macroblock Tracking in H.264/AVC Video

  • We propose a fast macroblock (MB) mode prediction and decision algorithm based on temporal correlation for P-slices in the H.264/AVC video standard. There are eight block types for temporal decorrelation, including SKIP mode based on rate-distortion (RD) optimization. This scheme gives rise to exhaustive computations (search) in the coding procedure. To overcome this problem, a thresholding method for fast inter mode decision using a MB tracking scheme to find the most correlated block and RD cost of the correlated block is suggested for early stop of the inter mode determination. We propose a two-step inter mode candidate selection method using statistical analysis. In the first step, a mode is selected based on the mode information of the co-located MB from the previous frame. Then, an adaptive thresholding scheme is applied using the RD cost of the most correlated MB. Secondly, additional candidate modes are considered to determine the best mode of the initial candidate modes that does not satisfy the designed thresholding rule. Comparative analysis shows that a speed-up factor of up to 70.59% is obtained when compared with the full mode search method with a negligible bit increment and a minimal loss of image quality.

  • Several image coding algorithms have been developed for the telecommunication and multimedia systems with high image quality and high compression ratio. In order to achieve low entropy and distortion, the system should pay great cost of computation time and memory. In this paper, the uniform cubic lattice is chosen for Lattice Vector Quantization (LVQ) because of its generic simplicity. As a transform coding, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is applied to the images because of its multiresolution property. The proposed algorithm is basically composed of the biorthogonal DWT and the uniform cubic LVQ. The multiresolution property of the DWT is actively used to optimize the entropy and the distortion on the basis of the distortion-rate function. The vector codebooks are also designed to be optimal at each subimage which is analyzed by the biorthogonal DWT. For compression efficiency, the vector codebook has different dimension depending on the variance of subimage. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed coding mdthod is superior to the others in terms of the computation complexity and the PSNR in the range of entropy below 0.25 bpp.

  • We consider a buffer-constrained adaptive quantization algorithm for image compression. Buffer control algorithm was considered with source coding scheme by some researchers and recently a formal description of the algorithm in terms of rate-distortion has been developed. We propose a buffer control algorithm that incorporates the buffer occupancy into the Lagrange multiplier form in a rate-distortion cost measure. Although the proposed algorithm provides the suboptimal performance as opposed to the optimal Vieterbi algorithm, it can be implemented with very low computaional complexity. In addition stability of this buffer control algorithm has been mentioned briefly using Liapnov stability theory.

  • In this paper, we present a new macroblock-based bit allocation scheme in multiple MPEG-1 video encoders system and a single multiplexer over a single channel. The proposed scheme models the relations between fate(Bits/MB) and distortion(MSE/MB), rate and quantizer parameter(QP), distortion and quantizer parameter, respectively, in the same form. By using these relations, we minimize the Larangian cost function to obtain a bit allocation scheme based on macroblock unit. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can reduce MSE compared to other conventional buffer-based rate control methods, i.e. independent buffer control method and shared common buffer control one. And we confirmed, through computer simulation, that the proposed scheme can be effectively modified to maintain the objective quality of a specific video service at a constant level.

  • Rate-of-return regulation where a regulator compensates the utilities based upon the cost incurred the regulated companies have the incentive to over-report cost level. However, in case of cost-based competition where a regulator knows the cost of each plant involved and induce the competition among them, one can encounter prisoner's dilemma situation in the short run where the regulated firms under-report cost level. For instance, in case of cost-based pool, a generator may have a strategic behavior to keep its registered variable cost higher than the actual level to maintain its operation rate and generation amounts higher. Eventually, however, such behavior decrease the profitability of a generator and discourage new entry jeopardizing required level of capacity reserves. This is a typical Prisoner's Dilemma situation. The power market operating rule should be revised so that generators' registered variable cost reflect actual level of variable cost.

Fast CU Decision Algorithm using the Initial CU Size Estimation and PU modes' RD Cost (초기 CU 크기 예측과 PU 모드 예측 비용을 이용한 고속 CU 결정 알고리즘)

  • High Efficiency Video Coding(HEVC) obtains high compression ratio by applying recursive quad-tree structured coding unit(CU). However, this recursive quad-tree structure brings very high computational complexity to HEVC encoder. In this paper, we present fast CU decision algorithm in recursive quad-tree structure. The proposed algorithm estimates initial CU size before CTU encoding and checks the proposed condition using Coded Block Flag(CBF) and Rate-distortion cost to achieve the fast encoding time saving. And, intra mode estimation is also possible to be skipped using the CBF values acquired during the inter PU mode estimations. Experiment results shows that the proposed algorithm saved about 49.91% and 37.97% of encoding time according to the weighting condition.
