  • Consolidation characteristics of reclamated ground with dredged soil and methods of evaluating them are investigated in this paper. For a dredged and reclamated ground with a very high water content, self-weight consolidation being progressed, its consolidation characteristics are difficult to find since it is almost impossible to have a undisturbed sample. In order to overcome such a problem, methods of laboratory tests with disturbed sample were studied to obtain consolidation parameters required to analyze consolidation settlement in practices, using the conventional infinitesimal consolidation theory, were evaluated by carrying out various laboratory tests with disturbed soils such as oedometer test, constant rate of deformation test, Rowe-cell tests with ring diameters of 60 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm and the centrifuge model tests with 40 g-levels. Constitutive relations of void ratio - effective vertical stress - permeability were evaluated by using the inverse technique implemented with the finite strain consolidation theory and results of centrifuge model tests. Design soil parameters related to consolidation such as compression index, swelling index, coefficient of volume change and vertical and horizontal consolidation coefficients were proposed properly by analyzing the various test results comprehensively.

  • This study aimed to estimate the axial stress and torque on a shaft in a disc cutter. The corresponding inner temperature and the surface temperature of a cutter ring were also measured by using strain gauges and thermocouples during the linear cutting tests. The maximum values of the axial stress and torque were recorded to 11.3 MPa, $171kN{\cdot}m$ respectively. They have higher correlations with normal force rather than rolling force. The results of temperature measured by thermocouples during a linear cutting test showed that the rate of increase in temperature was below $0.2^{\circ}C$. When the cutter spacing is set to be 70 mm, the inner temperature and surface temperature of a disc cutter were $0.1^{\circ}C/m$, $0.15{\sim}0.17^{\circ}C/m$ respectively. Similarly, when the cutter spacing is 90 mm, the temperature values were $0.09^{\circ}C/m$, $0.13{\sim}0.23^{\circ}C/m$ respectively.

  • ${\beta}$-Glucosidase from Aspergillus usamii KCTC 6954 was used to convert ginsenoside Rb1 to compound K, which has a high bio-functional activity. The enzymatic activities during culturing for 15 days were determined using ${\rho}$-nitrophenyl-${\beta}$-glucopyranoside. The growth rate of the strain and the enzymatic activity were maximized after 6 days (IU; $175.93{\mu}M\;ml^{-1}\;min^{-1}$). The activities were maximized at $60^{\circ}C$ in pH 6.0. During culturing, Rb1 was converted to Rd after 9 d and then finally converted to compound K at 15 d. In the enzymatic reaction, Rb1 was converted to the ginsenoside Rd within 1 h of reaction time and compound K could be detected after 8 h. As a result, this study demonstrates that $Rb1{\rightarrow}Rd{\rightarrow}F2{\rightarrow}$compound K is the main metabolic pathway catalyzed by ${\beta}$-glucosidase and that ${\beta}$-glucosidase is a feasible option for the development of specific bioconversion processes to obtain minor ginsenosides such as Rd and compound K.

  • In order to characterize the microscopic fracture behaviour of the weldment din stress corrosion cracking(SCC) phenomena, SCC and acoustic emission(AE) tests were carried out simultaneously and the correlation between mechanical paramenters obtained from SCC and AE tests was investigated. In the case of base metal, much more AE events were produced at -0.5V than at -0.8V because of the dissolution mechanism before the maximum load. Regardless of the applied voltages to the specimens, however, AE events decreased after the maximum load. In the case of weldment, lots of AE events with larger amplitude $range(40{\sim}100dB)$ were produced because of the singularities of weld HAZ in comparision to the base metal and post-weld heat-treated(PWHT) specimens. Numerous and larger cracks for the weldment were observed on the fractured surfaces by SEM examination. From these results, it was concluded that SCC for the weldment appeared most severely in synthetic seawater. Weld HAZ was softened by PWHT which also contributed to the reduced susceptibility to corrosive environment in comparison to the weldment.

  • This study is to evaluate the characteristics of SCC at the welded region of high strength steel using acoustic emission(AE) method. Specimens were loaded by a slow strain rate method in synthetic seawater and the damage process was monitored simultaneously by AE method. Corrosive environment was controlled using the potentiostat, in which -0.8V and -1.1V were applied to the specimens. In the case of one-pass weldment subjected to -0.8V, much more AE counts were detected compared with the PWHT specimen. It was verified through the cumulative counts that coalescence of micro cracks and cracks for the one pass weldment with -0.8V were mostly detected. In case of the one pass weldment subjected to -1.1V, time to failure became shorter and AE counts were produced considerably as compared with that of the two pass weldment. It was shown that AE counts and range of AE amplitude have close relations with the number and size as well as width of the cracks which were formed during the SCC.

  • In general, polymer concrete has more excellent mechanical properties and durability than Portland cement concrete, but very sensitive to heat and has large deformations. In this study, the long-term creep behaviors was predicted by the short-term creep test, and then the characteristic of creep of recycled-PET polymer concrete was defined by material and experimental variables. The error in the predicted long-term creep values is less than 5 percent for all polymer concrete systems. The filler carry out an important role to restrict the creep strains of recycled PET Polymer concrete. The creep strain and specific on using the $CaCO_3$ were less than using fly-ash. The creep increases with an increase in the applied stress, but not proportional the rate of stress increase ratio. The creep behavior of polymer concrete using recycled polyester resin is not a linear viscoelastic behavior.

  • When both fructose and galactose were added to a production medium as carbon sources, the productivity of PAFS (Psedomonas Antifungal Substance) biosynthesized by Pseudomonas aeruginosa was observed to be reduced significantly due to the well-known phenomenon of catabolite repression. In order to overcome this phenomenon by use of fermentation bioprocess, fed-batch cultivation method was examined. In addition, a high producer mutant strain, AP-20 obtained by a rational screening method was tested for its productivity of PAFS in both batch and fed-batch fermentation processes. Notably fed-batch operation showed approximately 4 fold higher PAFS productivity than traditional batch operation process. It was appeared that galactose was utilized principally for the cell growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa whereas large portion of fructose was used for the biosynthesis of PAFS. Furthermore it was observed that composition and feeding rate of production media should be optimized even in the fed-batch fermentation bioprocess. As an example, very slow feeding of carbon sources gave rather negative effect on the production of PAFS due to significant limitation of carbon and energy sources available for the producer microorganism.

  • A series of centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the behavior of piled bridge abutments subjected to lateral soil movements induced by approach embankments. The effect of clay layer depth and the rate of embankment construction on piled bridge abutments are the main focus of this study. Tests were performed for two loading types: (1) incremental loading applied in six lifts to the final embankment height; (2) instant loading corresponding to the final embankment height applied in one lift quickly. A variety of instrumentations such as LVDTs, strain gauges, earth pressure transducers, and pore pressure transducers are installed in designed positions in order to clarify the soil-pile interaction and the short- and long-term behavior for piled bridge abutments adjacent to surcharge loads. Based on the results of a series of centrifuge model tests, the distribution of lateral flow induced by staged embankment construction has trapezoidal distribution. The maximum lateral soil pressure is about 0.75$\gamma$H at surcharge loading stage, and about 0.35 $\gamma$H at over 80% consolidated stage.

  • Course correction munition are a weapson system for precision attacks and are assembled by applying a ballistic control system to existing projectiles. The roll control system is a subsystem of the ballistic control system and is placed between the guidance and control units inside of the projectile, which undergoes a 5000g lateral acceleration. Thus, it is very important to design the system to endure this load. Many developed countries evaluate the performance and safety of course correction munitions' parts using live-fire gun launch tests or a soft recovery system. However, these methods are expensive and slow. Thus, in this study, we develop impact analysis model of the roll control system using CAE. We apply the code to simulate impact phenomenon and use Johnson-Cook material model for modeling the high strain rate effect on the materials. We also design bearings in detail to analyze their behavior and verify the reliability of CAE model through gas-gun impact tests of the roll control system.
