Rheological Properties of Gelatinized Millet Starch Dispersions (국내산 조전분 호화액의 유동특성)

  • Rheological properties of gelatinized millet starch dispersions were evaluated. Gelatinized nonwaxy and waxy millet starch dispersion were typical pseudoplastic fluids. At constant shear rate, gelatinized waxy millet starch dispersion showed higher shear stress than nonwaxy millet starch dispersion. Flow behaviours of gelatinized nonwaxy and waxy millet starch dispersion were well fitted to Herschel-Bulkley equation and flow behaviour index (n) and consistency index (K) were strongly concentration dependent. There was a linear relationship between concentration of gelatinized starch dispersion and square root of yield stress. The concentrations of gelatinized nonwaxy and waxy millet starch dispersion where yield stresses become zero were estimated as 2.19 and 1.69%, respectively. Pseudoplastic constant (m) approaches to a constant value in each type of millet starch when the concentration of gelatinized starch dispersion was increased. As the measuring temperatures increase, n value was increased, whereas, K value was decreased. The activation energies of gelatinized nonwaxy and waxy millet starch dispersion were 2.89 and 3.18kcal/mol, respectively.

Leaf Growth and Forage Yield in Three Cultivars of Orchardgrass ( Dactylis glomerata L. ) over Cutting Stages II. Relationship between forage yield and growth indices (오차드그라스 ( Dactylis glomerata L. ) 품종들의 예취에 따른 엽생장과 수량형성 II. 오차드그라스 품종들의 생장지수들과 건물수량과의 관계)

  • The response of forage yield was studied with various growth indices to develop yield model and to determine optimum cutting time in three cultivars of orchardgrass 1. Number of tiller per plant was the highest at 3rd cutting stage. But, it was decreased rapidly at 4th cutting stage. Leaf Area Index (LAI) was the highest at 3rd cutting stage. LA1 was increased slowly during 15 days to 20 days after cutting and thereafter increased rapidly. 2. In dry matter yield over cutting stages, 1st cutting and 3rd cutting stages were higher yield than others. Change of dry matter yield was similar to that of LA1 in all cutting stages. 3. Leaf Elongation Rate (LER) and Specific Leaf Weight (SLW) were reached to maximum at 20 to 25 days and 25 to 30 days after cutting, respectively, 4. Dry matter yield was highly correlated with LA1 (r=0.905)and with CGR (r=0.962) over three cultivars. Also, LA1 was significantly with LER. The best-fit yield model was obtained in multiple regression equation which included both dependent variables of LA1 and CGR. 5. Optimum cutting times which were determined by the relationships between D.M. yield and LAI, and between D.M. yield and CGR, were ranged from 32 days t o 36 days depend on each cutting stages.

  • While economic crises are happening internationally due to the global financial crisis and the long-term recession of the domestic economy, South Korea is also experiencing an aging society with the retirement of the baby-boomers and a low birth-rate. The rapid retirement of baby-boomers, which is one of the essential parts of the Korean economy, is ongoing. Consequently, the number of seniors showing interest in entrepreneurship, as a way to avoid the economic threat, is increasing. Therefore, this study examined the correlation between two factors and its success, which can be stated as the influence of decision making in entrepreneurship and the influence of promotion policies to entrepreneurship. A survey was taken from 393 people, who received academic and managerial assistance from the Senior-Founded Support Center of Small Business Market Corporation and Adults Incubators of Seoul-Business Agency. and 'Hypothesis 1-1' and 'Hypothesis 2-2' were selected, because a positive effect was derived at each verification process. As a result, under the decision making types of entrepreneurship, only a reasonable type showed a positive effect at both the financial outcome and non-financial outcome of success, and the intuitive type was affected positively by the non-financial outcome. In addition, under the entrepreneur supporting business, among financial support, managerial support and educational support only managerial support had a positive effect.

Price Response Function With and Without Choice Set Information in Denim Jeans Market (고려상품군의 유.무에 따른 가격반응함수의 비교연구)

  • The primary purpose of this study is to suggest a new methodology for calibration of a continuous price response function and to compare the differences in the price response function with and without choice set information. Through the new methodology, the two-staged conjoint analysis, the continuous price response function far jeans market was calibrated. Three steps were required to complete the two-staged conjoint analysis. Step one provided respondents with both a written and a visual description of two different randomly selected styles and colors of denim jeans. In step two respondents were asked to choose the combination of attributes they intended to purchase. Based upon the literature review, these four attributes included: brand, style, price, and color. Respondents were required to assess their purchase intentions for 32 combinations by marking Yes if she/he would purchase a given combination and No if she/he would not purchase a given combination. This allowed for identification of each respondents choice set. Instructions in step three required respondents to rate each combination marked Yes on a scale of 1-100, with one as least likely to be purchased and 100 as most likely to be purchased. This value served as the dependent variable for estimating the parameters in the model. Furthermore, the empirical study shows that there is a difference in price response function with and without choice set information. Therefore, when one calibrates a price response function far a given brand, we can recommend to include choice set information in his/her research.

Protective Effects on Gastric Lesion of Ursolic acid (Ursolic acid의 위 손상에 대한 방어 효과)

  • This study is an experiment for gastric protective effects of ursolic acid. In order to identify the effects of ursolic acid on gastrointestinal disorder, acute and chronic gastritis were also observed using HCl ethanol and indomethacin-induced gastric lesion models, respectively. As for gastric acid, it was also identified through proton pump ($H^+/K^+-ATPase$) inhibiting activity. In regards to protective factor for gastric damage, prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) was quantitatively analyzed. Antibacterial activity experiment was done on Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori), which is known to be the causing factor of chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. By making use of AGS cell, it was confirmed that ursolic acid was involved in apoptosis of gastric cancer cell through 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindol (DAPI) staining and flow cytometry analysis. As a result, ursolic acid reduced gastric lesions caused by HCl ethanol and indomethacin. Ursolic acid inhibited acid secretion by inhibiting proton pump ($H^+/K^+-ATPase$), which is the gastric acid secreting enzyme involved at the final phase of gastric acid secretion. And ursolic acid was identified with gastric mucosa protection effects by increasing the concentration of $PGE_2$, a protective factor of gastric mucosa preservation. The antibacterial activity on H. pylori, which is aggressive factor in gastrointestinal disorder, ursolic acid showed inhibitory effects on H. pylori colonization. In the DAPI nuclear staining, unlike the control group, shape of the nucleus has deformed, and has been observed either shrinked cell or chromatin condensation phenomenon. In the Flow cytometry assay, confirmed the growth rate of apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner.

Effects of Sediment and Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on the Feeding Behavior of Omnivores Gold Fish Carassius auratus (잡식어 붕어의 섭식활동에 퇴적물 및 독성 남조 Microcystis aeruginosa의 영향)

  • Effects of sediment and toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on feeding behaviors of an omnivorous fish, gold fish (Carassius auratus) were examined in laboratory and in situ mesocosm. Laboratory feeding experiments were performed in small aquaria (7 L) with cyanobacterial blooms (mainly M. aeruginosa) under the condition of sediments and no-sediments, and toxic (NIES-298) and non-toxic M. aeruginosa (NIES-101). In situ feeding experiments were conducted at the shore of eutrophic lake (Lake Ilgam, Seoul) in the mid-July, 2005. Results showed that fish introduction decreased the concentration of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) at higher rate in no sediment-containing aquaria. In contrast, there was a drastic increase of Chl-a in the sedimentcontaining aquaria. Fish effectively removed the M. aeruginosa cells without algal toxin (microcystin). Fish also selectively removed the large size Chl-a (>$50{\mu}m$), although all kinds of nutrients were increased after fish introduction, especially ammonia. Our results indicate that the strategic introduction of domestic omnivores Carassius auratus, to control cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic lake will negatively play in the water quality improvement via a sediment disturbance and a density-dependent digestion.

Esterification Reaction of Soybean Oil by Heterogeneous Catalysts (불균일상 촉매를 이용한 대두유의 에스테르화 반응)

  • Using heterogeneous catalyst, esterification reaction of soybean oil (SBO) with methanol was investigated. Distributions of components in mixtures of soybean oil and methanol were measured at temperatures ranging from 40 to $65^{\circ}C$. Glycerine contents of reaction mixtures were measured for the different kinds of catalysts, such as NaOH, CaO, Ca(OH)$_2$, MgO, Mg(OH)$_2$, and Ba(OH)$_2$. Based on the measured glycerine concentrations, conversions of the reaction mixtures were calculated. The effects of dose of catalyst, cosolvent and reaction temperature on final conversion were examined. Solubility of methanol in soybean oil was substantially greater than that of soybean oil in methanol. When the esterification reaction of soybean oil was catalyzed by heterogeneous catalyst, final conversion was strongly dependent on the alkalinity of the heterogeneous catalyst, and increased with the alkalinity of the catalyst material. Hydroxides from the alkali metals were more effective than oxides, which actually had no catalytic effects. When Ca(OH)$_2$ was used for the esterification catalyst, maximum value of final conversion was measured at dose of 4%. The final conversion and reaction rate increased with reaction temperature, and showed substantial increment at reaction temperature of 5$0^{\circ}C$. When cosolvent, CHCl$_3$, was added into the reaction mixture of soybean oil which catalyzed by Ba(OH)$_2$, maximum value of final conversion was appeared at dose of 3%.

Physiological Activities of Hot Water Extracts from Ecklonia cava Kjellman (감태 열수 추출물의 생리활성)

  • The biological activity of hot water extract from Ecklonia cava Kjellman (ECE) was investigated to assess antioxidative, anti-skin aging, and nitrite scavenging abilities, as well as alcohol metabolizing activities. Antioxidant activity of ECE was measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-like activity of ECE increased in a remarkably dose-dependent manner, and were about 91.4% and 75% at 1 mg/ml, respectively. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity was indicated to be about 70% at 1 mg/ml of ECE. Nitrite scavenging ability of ECE showed to be 93.6% at 1 mg/ml and pH 1.2. The influence of ECE on alcohol metabolism was demonstrated through the generating activity of reduced-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). The facilitating rate of ADH and ALDH activity by ECE was 167.2% and 334% at 10 mg/ml, respectively. In addition, tyrosinase and elastase inhibitory activities of ECE were 58% and 72% at 10 mg/ml, respectively. These results indicated that ECE has valuable biological attributes owing to its antioxidant, nitrite scavenging, alcohol metabolizing, and elastase and tyrosinase inhibitory activities.

The Skin-Whitening Effects of Padina Gymnospora and Its Active Compound, Fucosterol (아롱부챗말과 그의 활성성분인 fucosterol의 미백 효과)

  • Padina gymnospora is a brown algae of the class Phaeophyceae. It has been established that P. gymnospora ameliorates amyloid-β-induced neuropathology and has an anticoagulation effect, but this study was designed to estimate its skin-whitening effect and identify its active component. The ingredients of P. gymnospora were extracted with ethanol and its activity was compared with arbutin. First, the P. gymnospora extract was observed to inhibit tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner, tyrosinase being the rate-limiting enzyme of melanin synthesis. Notably, where 200 μM of arbutin inhibited tyrosinase activity by 58.1%, P. gymnospora extract (0.5%) achieved 76.7%. The P. gymnospora extract also significantly reduced α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-induced TRP-1 and TRP-2 mRNA expression. In addition, it significantly inhibited melanin synthesis in B16F10 melanoma cells. We identified the 0.66% fucosterol content that inhibited melanin synthesis as comparable to that of arbutin. Additionally, we tested the potential cytotoxicity of P. gymnospora by MTT and LDH release assay and found that the extract significantly reduced LDH release in CCD-986sk cells. These results indicate that P. gymnospora extract could be a potential active ingredient of cosmetics with a skin-whitening effect.

Rheological Properties of Pear Juice Concentrates (배주스 농축액의 리올로지 특성)

  • To improve the utilization of pear in its processing, the cloudy and clear juice concentrates were prepared and their rheological properties were investigated in the range of temperatures($5{\sim}60^{\circ}C$) and concentrations($15{\sim}60^{\circ}Brix$). Pear juice concentrates showed flow behavior close to Newtonian fluids. Their flow behavior was also explained by applying Power law model and Herschel-Bulkley model. Flow behavior index did not have good correlation with concentration, but decreased with the increase of temperature, showing pseudoplastic properties. Consistency index increased with the increase of concentration and with the decrease of temperature. The effect of temperature and concentration on the apparent viscosity at 1500 1/s shear rate was examined by applying Arrhenius equation. The activation energy for flow of the cloudy and clear pear juice concentrates increased from $1.5140{\times}10^4\;to\;3.4141{\times}10^4\;J/kg{\cdot}mol$, and from $1.4762{\times}10^4\;to\;3.4963{\times}10^4\;J/kg{\cdot}mol$ with the increase of concentration, respectively. The influence of temperature on the apparent viscosity was more pronounced at higher concentration. And the concentration-dependent constant A decreased from $0.0789\;to\;0.0484^{\circ}Brix^{-1}$, and from $0.0786\;to\;0.0476^{\circ}Brix^1$ with the increase of temperature, respectively.
