  • The goal of this study is to understand the influence of temperature on phosphorus release rate from soil into water. As the temperature increases, $PO_4$-P reaches equilibrium more quickly and the equilibrium concentration increases, and thus the $PO_4$-P concentration increases, and pH decreases. The $PO_4$-P concentration affects pH. $PO_4$-P released from turbidity is not adsorbed onto the turbidity. $PO_4$-P was independent on the turbidity and yet $PO_4$-P was steadily increasing. However, $PO_4$-P was dependent upon the turbidity concentration as the turbidity releases $PO_4$-P. The total phosphorous (T-P) and turbidity were directly linked because T-P changed with the turbidity. T-P includes the $PO_4$-P content of water and the phosphorus content of the turbidity. As the temperature decreases, density of water increases, and the precipitation of turbidity decreases, resulting in an increases in T-P concentration. As the temperature increases, the T-P concentration decreases, but the PO4-P release rate from turbidity increases. At the same time, even at different temperatures, the T-P concentrations of the samples were about the same. When the lake gets deepened, the water temperature decreases, hence, the phosphorus release rate from soil into water was decreased. This mechanism is of great interest because phosphorus is released from soil sediment into the lake water.

  • The effects of adenosine on the mechanical contractions and electrical activities were investigated in guinea-pig stomach. Spontaneous contractions of the antral region were recorded with force transducer, and the phasic contractions of fundic region were induced by electrical field stimulation. Electrical responses of smocth muscle cells were recored using glass capillary microelectrodes filled with 3M-KCl. Field stimulation was applied transmurally by using a pair of platinum wire (0.5 mm in diameter) placed on both sides of tissue. All experiments were performed in tris-buffered Tyrode solution which was aerated with 100% $O_2$ and kept at $35^{\circ}C$. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Adenosine suppressed the spontaneous contractions of antrum in a dose-dependent manner. 2) The inhibitory effect on antral spontaneous contractions was not influenced by the administration of guanethidine $(5{\times}10^{-6}\;M)$ and atropine $10^{-6}\;M$, or in the presence of dipyridamole $10^{-7}\;M$. 3) The phasic contractions of fundus induced by electrical field stimulation, which disappeared rapidly by the addition of tetrodotoxin $(3{\times}10^{-7}\;M)$, were potentiated by adenosine in the presence of guanethidine. 4) Adenosine decreased the amplitude and the maximum rate of rise of slow waves, and the increased amplitude and rate of rise evoked in the high calcium solution or in the presence of TEA were decreased by adenosine. 5) The non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic inhibitory junction potential (IJP) was inhibited by adenosine in the antral region, while the excitatory junction potential (EJP) in the fundic region was potentiated. From the above results, the following conclusions could be made. 1) Adenosine suppresses the spontaneous contractions of antrum strip by the decrease in amplitude and rate of rise of slow waves. 2) The release of neurotransmitter(s) from non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic nerve terminals is inhibited by adenosine.

  • Two polyethylene tubes were inserted into the esophagus of anesthetized rabbit in order to record the fluctuation of the intraluminal pressure through the orifices located near the tips of the tubes. The orifice of the first tube was 10 cm apart from the incisor of the rabbit and the orifice of the second tube was 5 cm below that of the first one. The tubes were filled with saline solution running at various rates ranging from 1.5 ml/min. to 4.2 ml/min. The tubes were connected to the pressure transducers and the electrical signals were recorded by the physiograph. When the peristaltic wave approached to the orifice a rise in the pressure was recorded, returning to the base line when the portion of the orifice was quiescent. The frequency of the peristaltic motion and the velocity of the wave were studied in connection with the flow rate of saline solution through the tubes and in the case of massive acute hemorrhage. The results obtained were as follows: 1. There was reflux of fluid induced during the procedure of the experiment. This outwrad flow through the pharynx seemed to elicite swallowing reflexes. Accordingly, the frequency of peristalsis of the esophagus was largely dependent on the flow rate of the fluid through the inserted tubes. By the flow rate of 1.5 ml/min., 2.5 ml/min., or 4.2 ml/min., the frequencies of the peristalsis were revealed to be $8.6{\pm}3.6/10min.,\;14.5{\pm}4.8/10min.\;or\;21.1{\pm}6.3/10min.,$ respectively. The velocity of peristalsis also coincided with the enhanced motility of the esophagus, showing $6.6{\pm}1.5\;cm/sec.,\;8.9{\pm}3.9\;cm/sec.,\;or\;12.4{\pm}4.6\;cm/sec.,$ respectively. 2. By acute hemorrhage, amounting to 2% of the body weight, the frequency of the peristalsis increased to twofold of the control and the propagation velocity also increased by 52 percent. 3. Retransfusion of the shed blood resulted in divergent responses. In some cases there were noticable ameliorations of the effects brought by acute hemorrhage, and in the others there were still increasing tendenies of the motility after the transfusion. 4. Some speculation was made about the possibility of a kind of relationship between the irreversibility of the hemorrhagic shock and the absence of responses by transfusion. 5. The peristalsis persisted even after complete disconnection at the midportion of the esophagus, reaffirming the view of a central regulation of the spatiotemporally coordinated motility, peristalsis.

  • In the research field of speech recognition, pinpointing the endpoints of speech utterance even with the presence of background noise is of great importance. These noise present during recording introduce disturbances which complicates matters since what we just want is to get the stationary parameters corresponding to each speech section. One major cause of error in automatic recognition of isolated words is the inaccurate detection of the beginning and end boundaries of the test and reference templates, thus the necessity to find an effective method in removing the unnecessary regions of a speech signal. The conventional methods for speech endpoint detection are based on two linear time-domain measurements: the short-time energy, and short-time zero-crossing rate. They perform well for clean speech but their precision is not guaranteed if there is noise present, since the high energy and zero-crossing rate of the noise is mistaken as a part of the speech uttered. This paper proposes a novel approach in finding an apparent threshold between noise and speech based on Lyapunov Exponents (LEs). This proposed method adopts the nonlinear features to analyze the chaos characteristics of the speech signal instead of depending on the unreliable factor-energy. The excellent performance of this approach compared with the conventional methods lies in the fact that it detects the endpoints as a nonlinearity of speech signal, which we believe is an important characteristic and has been neglected by the conventional methods. The proposed method extracts the features based only on the time-domain waveform of the speech signal illustrating its low complexity. Simulations done showed the effective performance of the Proposed method in a noisy environment with an average recognition rate of up 92.85% for unspecified person.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate cumulative survival rate (CSR) of Implantium implants followed for 5 years and association between risk factors and the CSR. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of two hundred forty-nine Implantium Implants System (Dentium, Seoul, Korea) placed in ninety-five patients from 2004 to 2009 were investigated with several identified risk factors (sex, systemic disease, smoking, alchohol, reason of tooth loss, length, arch (maxilla or mandible), replace tooth type (incisor, canine, premolar or molar) Kennedy classification, prosthodontic type, prosthodontic design, opposite dentition, abutment type, occlusal material, occlusal unit, splint to tooth, cantilever, other surgery). Clinical examination (mobility, percussion, screw loosening, discomfort, etc.) and radiographic examination data were collected from patient records including all problems during follow-up period according to protocols described earlier. Life table analysis was undertaken to examine the CSR. Cox regression method was conducted to assess the association between potential risk factors and overall CSR. RESULTS. Five of 249 implants were failed. Four of these were lost before loading. The 5-year implant cumulative survival rate was 97.37%. Cox regression analysis demonstrated a significant predictive association between overall CSR and systemic disease, smoking, reason of tooth loss, arch, Kennedy classification and prosthodontic design (P<.05). The screw related complication was rare. Two abutment screw fractures were found. Another complications of prosthetic components were porcelain fracture, resin facing fracture and denture fracture (n=19). CONCLUSION. The 5-year CSR of Implantium implants was 97.37 %. Implant survival may be dependent upon systemic disease, smoking reason of tooth loss, arch, Kennedy classification and prosthodontic design (P<.05). The presence of systemic diseases and combination of other surgical procedures may be associated with increased implant failure.

  • The distributional effects of radioactive materials on external gamma exposure have been analyzed. An approximate method for estimating external gamma dose given from an arbitrary distribution of radioactive material has been developed. The minimum gamma exposure given from a point source is shown at 0.07 MeV if the source to receptor distance is shorter than 10 m. But if the receptor to point source distance is longer than 20 m, gamma exposure rate increases monotonously according to the average gamma energy. For the analysis of the effects of volume source, we estimated the gamma dose given from different size of hemisphere in which radioactive materials are distributed uniformly. When the radius of hemisphere is longer than 40 m, external gamma dose rate increases monotonously. The gamma dose rate given from the radioactive materials deposited on the ground shows the minimum value at 0.07 MeV in any case. The analysis shows that external gamma exposure is strongly dependent on the distribution of radioactive materials in the environment and gamma energy.

  • Temperature-fecundity of the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, was studied at constant temperatures ranging from 15 to $32.5^{\circ}C$ under $60-70\%$ RH and a photoperiod of 16 : 8 (L : D) A life table parameters were constructed using the results. The longevity of A. gossypii gradually increased with decreasing temperature below $27.5^{\circ}C$. Also fecundity increased with decreasing temperature and the highest fecundity was 61.8 nymphs per female at $17.5^{\circ}C$. However. daily fecundity increased with increasing temperatures up to $22.5^{\circ}C$ showing 5.9 nymphs per day and thereafter decreased. Longevity and fecundity of the adult in the greenhouse with an average temperature of $21^{\circ}C$ and $65.6\%$ RH, were 20.0 days and 59.6, respectively, which were longer and higher than those in the growth chamber with similar conditions. net reproductive rate (Ro) was 54.9 at $17.5^{\circ}C$ while intrinsic rate of increase ($r_m$) and finite rate of increase ($\lambda$) were the highest 0.5 and 1.6 at $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. doubling time (DT) and mean generation time (T) were the shortest 1.4 and 6.8 at $30^{\circ}C$ indicating that optimal temperature for the development is $30^{\circ}C$.

  • A model of substrate removal by rotating discs has been developed for a better understanding of the process, and the performance of the system has been evaluated under steady and unsteady state. The model was constructed based upon mass transfer of the substrate from the bulk solution to the biofilm and a simultaneous removal of the substrate by the biomass. The model is composed of a few sets of differential equations representing mass balance within the elements of a liquid film and a biofilm, and in the bulk solution. Substrate removal efficiency of the process is largely dependent on a diffusion coefficient of the substrate within the biofilm and a maximum rate of substrate removal of the biomass. The efficiency is affected to a greater extent when the substrate concentration is low and the maximum substrate removal rate is high. The efficiency increases proportionally with increasing film depth when the biofilm is shallow, however, the rate of increase gradually decreases with an increase of the film depth. As the film reaches a limiting depth, the efficiency remains constant. Unlike the steady state, the effluent quality is affected by the tank volume under dynamic state. Increasing tank volume decreases peak concentration of the effluent under peak loading. Additional tank volume provides a buffer capacitya.gainst a peak loading and the holding tank behaves like an equalization tank.

  • The Hawaiian beet webworm (Spoladea recurvalis) is one of the serious insect pests found on red beet (Beta vulgaris var. conditiva) in Korea. The study was conducted to investigate the development period of S. recurvalis at various constant temperatures, 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5 and $35.0^{\circ}C$, with $65{\pm}5%$ RH and a photoperiod of 16L:8D. The developmental period from egg to pre-adult was 51.0 days at $17.5^{\circ}C$ and 14.6 days at $35.0^{\circ}C$. The developmental period of S. recurvalis was decreased with increasing temperature. The relationship between the developmental rate and temperature was fitted well by linear regression analysis ($R^2{\geq}0.87$). The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperature of the total immature stage were $10.4^{\circ}C$ and 384.7 degree days, respectively. The nonlinear relationship between the temperature and developmental rate was well described by the Lactin model. The relationship between the cumulative frequency and normalized distributions of the developmental period for each life stage were fitted to the Weibull function with $R^2=0.63{\sim}0.87$.

  • Metolachlor may pose a threat to surface and ground water qualities due to its high solubility in water, Zerovalent iron (ZVI) releases $e^-$ which can degrade the organochlorinated compounds. The objective of this research was to evaluate the kinetics of metolachlor degradation as affected by ZVI sources [Peerless unannealed (PU) and Peerless annealed (PA)] and ZVI levels (1 and 5%) under batch conditions at different metolachlor concentrations (200 and 1000 mg/l) and temperatures (15, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$). The effectiveness of ZVI on metolachlor degradation was assessed by characterizing the dechlorinated metolachlor byproduct molecules. Metolachlor degradation by ZVI followed the first-ordered kinetics with a higher rate constant at higher level of ZVI treatment. At 5% (w/v) of PU and PA treatment, the half-lives of metolachlor degradation were 9.93 and 6.51 h and all of the initial metolachlor were degraded in 72 and 48 h, respectively. Rate constants (k) of metolachlor degradation were higher at the lower initial metolachlor concentration. The metolachlor degradation by ZVI was temperature dependent showing that the rate constant (k) at 15, 25, and $35^{\circ}C$ were 0.0805, 0.1017, and 0.3116 /h, respectively. The ZVI-mediated metolachlor degradation yielded two byproduct molecules identified as dechlorinated metolachlor $(C_{13}H_{18}NO)$ and dechlorinated-dealkylated metolachlor $(C_{12}H_{17}NO)$. The PA ZVI was more effective than PU ZVI in metolachlor degradation.
