Species, doses and routes extrapolation can be sucessfully carried out by using a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) approach. And PBPK approach to assess risk of hazardous chemicals is reasonable whatever the exposure scenarios are happened. Both partitioning coefficients of chemical between tissue and blood and enzymatic metabolic rate constants are key parameters to build up the PBPK model. In this study, we tried to estimate in vitro metabolic rate constants using a special apparatus instead to measure the in vivo constants which are used to PBPK simulation since the in vitro tests are less expensive and more convenient than in vivo tests. For the purpose, we designed and tested the new system to measure continuously the headspace concentration of VOC. The newly designed system is composed with a diffusion chamber which generates gaseous substrate, a reaction vessel with a recirculating pump to establish a closed system, an autbmatic sampler from a gas phase, a gas chromatography to analyze the headspace. In addition, a cold water condenser is attached between the reaction vessel and pump to reduce the content of gaseous moisture which interferes with chemical analysis. To validate the newly developed methodology, in vitro metabolic rate constants of trichloroethylene (TCE) as a prototype VOC were estimated by simulating observed results with an ACSL program. The simulated results are consistent to those estimated by the other research groups. This finding suggests that our newly designed closed system may be a useful apparatus to estimate in vitro metabolic rate constants for VOC.
To investigate physicochemical and cooking properties of parboiled rice, choochung paddy processed to parboiled rice by three methods (PL, PT, PA) milled and examined hydration, cooking qualities and firming rate of cooked parboiled rice. The results were obtained as follows. The longer the steaming time during parboiling the larger EMC of soaked parboiled rice. Water uptake rate constants (k) of all the parboiled rice during soaking except for PT rice were generally increased than those of raw rice. The longer the steaming time during parboiling the greater volume increase rate constants ( $k_{v}$) of parboiled rice samples. The glelatinization temperature of parboiled rice flour by DSC was more increased than that of raw rice flour. Gelatinized entalpy was decreased and gelatinization content (%SG: degree of starch gelatinization) was increased by parboiling process. In cooking tests, parboiled rices were harder than raw rice and softness (reciprocal of hardness) was greater PT30, PA, PL30 in turns the cooking time of the parboiled rice took longer 3-10 min than that of raw rice, PL30 took longer time than anyother rices. Cooking water of parboiled rices could be observed lighter turbidities than that of raw rice. Firming rate constants of cooked rice during storage 24 hours were generally decreased by parboiling-processing. The time constants, reciprocal of firming constants of cooked PL30 rice were 2 times slower than those of cooked raw rice.e.
Solvolyses of p-methoxyphenyl chloroformate in water, D2O, CH3OD, 50% D2O-CH3OD, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, ethanol and methanol are investigated at 25.0 ℃. Product selectivities are reported at 25 ℃ for a wide range of ethanol-water and methanol-water solvent compositions. The Grunwald-Winstein plots of first-order rate constants for p-methoxyphenyl chloroformate with YCl (based on 1-adamantyl chloride) show marked dispersions into three separate curves for the three aqueous mixtures with a small m value and a rate maximum for aqueous alcohol solvents. Third-order rate constants, kww, kaw, kwa and kaa were calculated from the observed kww and kaa values together with kaw and kwa calculated from the intercept and slope of the plot of 1/S vs. [alcohol]/[water]. The calculated rate constants, kcalc and mol % of ester agree satisfactorily with those of the observed rate constants, kobs and mol % of ester, supporting the stoichiometric solvation effect analysis. The kinetic solvent isotope effects determined in water and methanol are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the general base catalyzed carbonyl addition-elimination.

Chemical-kinetic parameters of the equilibrium constants to evaluate the reverse rate coefficients in the shock layer of a blunt body and the expanding flows are derived for the temperature range from 300 K to 20,000 K. The expanded equilibrium constants for the chemical reactions of the dissociation, ionization, associative ionization, and neutral and charge exchange reactions of the atmospheric species and carbon materials are proposed in the present work. In evaluating the equilibrium constants, the inter-nuclear potential energies of the molecular species are calculated by the analytical potential function of the Hulburt-Hirschfelder model, and the parameters of the analytical model are determined from the semi-classically calculated RKR potentials. The electronic states and energies of the atoms are calculated by the electronic energy grouping model, and the rovibrational states and energies of each electronic states of the molecules are evaluated by the WKB method. The expanded equilibrium constants for 31 types of the reactions are provided for the best curve-fit functions, and the recombination reaction rate coefficients evaluated from the present equilibrium constants are compared with existing measured values.
This study was conducted to determine the decomposition rate constants of organic matter and to evaluate the process of regeneration of inorganic nutrients in coastal and open seawater. The mixture solution of glucose and glutamic acid, and night soil were used as the test organic matter. Oxygen uptake of test solution was observed every day for 5 days for evaluation of decomposition rate constants, and nutrient contents were analyzed every day for 40 days. The decomposition rate constants have been determined by Thomas slope method and compared with the values of each waters. The values of rate constants for open seawater and coastal water containing the mixture of glucose and glutamic acid were 0.23/day and 0.21/day, and those containing night soil 0.23/day and 0.20/day, respectively. The difference of decomposition rate constants between test materials was not found and the valus for each seawater was equal to each other. The nitrification process took place after 22 days for open seawater when night soil was added to the waters.
The present study was performed to investigate biodegradation rate of dichlorvos and methidathion. In the biodegradation test of two pesticides by the modified river die-away method from June 17 to August 22, 1998, the biodegradation rate constants and half-life were determined in Nakdong(A) and Kumho River(B). Biodegradation rate of dichlorvos was 4.51% in A sampling point, 6.88% in B sampling point after 7 days. Biodegradation rate constants and half-life of dichlorvos were 0.0066 and 105 days in A sampling point, 0.0102 and 67.9 days in B sampling point, respectively. Biodegradation rate of methidathion was 23% in A sampling point, 36% in B sampling point after 7 days. Biodegradation rate constants and half-life of methidathion were 0.0377 and 18.4 days in A sampling point, 0.0641 and 10.8 days in B sampling point, respectively. Biodegradation rate of methidathion was faster than that of dichlorvos. This suggested that the difference in biodegradation of pesticides was due to difference in the water quality and standard plate counts in the Nackdong and Kumho Rivers. The result of correlation analysis between biodegradation rate constants of the pesticides and water quality(DO, BOD, SS, ABS, NH$_3$-N, and NO$_3$-N) showed significant correlation with BOD, SS and NH$_3$-N at the 5% significant level. A significant linear equation was obtained from regression analysis at the 5% significant level, whereas, dependent variables were BOD, SS and NH$_3$-N, and the biodegradation rate constant was independent variable. It is suggested that dichlorvos will be mainly degraded by hydrolysis, and for methidathion was both hydrolysis and biodegradation. A significant QSAR equation was obtained from regression analysis at the 10% significant level, whereas, dependent variable is biodegradation rate constants of BPMC, chlorothalonil, dichlorvos and methidathion, vapor pressures, partition coefficients and water solubilities of the pesticides are independent variables. Also, a significant linear equation was obtained from regression analysis at the 1% significant level, whereas, dependent variable is biodegradation rate constants of BPMC, chlorothalonil, dichlorvos and methidathion, hydrolysis rate constants of the pesticides are independent variables. It is suggested that the pesticides will be degraded by main degradation factor when the pesticides was affected both hydrolysis and biodegradation.
This study investigates the gasification of coal char by $CO_2$ under high pressures in a drop tube furnace(DTF). The rate constants are derived for the shrinking core model using the conventional method based on the set reactor conditions. The computational fluid dynamic(CFD) simulations adopting the rate constants revealed that the carbon conversion was much slower than the experimental results, especially under high temperature and high partial pressure of reactants. Three reasons were identified for the discrepancy: i) shorter reaction time because of the entry region for heating, ii) lower particle temperature by the endothermic reaction, and iii) lower partial pressure of $CO_2$ by its consumption. Therefore, the rate constants were corrected based on the actual reaction conditions of the char. The CFD results updated using the corrected rate constants well matched with the measured values. Such correction of reaction conditions in a DTF is essential in deriving rate constants for any char conversion models by $H_2O$ and $O_2$ as well as $CO_2$.

Decay kinetics of Ga(5s), Ga(5p) and Ga(4d) atoms in Ar were studied by laser induced fluorescence technique. Theground state gallium atoms in the gas phase were generated by pulsed dc discharge of trimethyl gallium and argon mixtures. Both pulsed discharge and YAG-DYE laser system were controlled by a dual channel pulse generator and the delay time between the end of discharge and laser pulses was set 3.0-6.0 ms. The Ga(5s) and Ga(4d) atoms were generated by single photon excitation from the ground state Ga atoms and radiative lifetimes as well as the total quenching rate constants in Ar were obtained from the pressure dependence of the fluorescence decay rates. The Ga(5p) atoms were populated by a two-photon excitation method and the cascade fluorescence from Ga(5s) atoms were analyzed to extract quenching rate constant of Ga(5p) atoms by Ar in addition to radiative lifetimes of Ga(5p) state. The magnitudes of the quenching rate constants by Ar for the low-lying excited states of Ga atoms are 1.6-3$ {\times}10^{-11}cm^3$ molecul$e^{-1}s^{-1}$, which are much larger than those for alkali, alkaline earth and Group 12 metals. Based on the measured rate constants, kinetic simulations were done to assign state-to-state rate constants.
The reactions of triplet oxygen atom with halomethanes as a potential fire extinguisher were studied by a discharge flow-chemiluminescence imaging method. The experiments were carried out under second order conditions. The bimolecular atom-molecule reaction rate constants were determined in terms of the initial rate method. The initial concentration of oxygen atom was also determined under second order rate law instead of the pseudo-first order conditions with $[O(^3P)]_0{\ll}[sample]_0$. The second order conditions were more reliable than pseudo-first order conditions for the determinations of rate constants. The rate constants of the reactions $CF_3I\;+\;O(^3P)$, $CH_3PI\;+\'O(^3P)$, and $CHBrCl_2\;+\;O(^3P)$ were determined to be $5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-12}$ , $1.1\;×\;0^{-11}$ , and $1.9\;{\times}\;10^{-14}cm^3molecule^{-1}s^{-1}$, respectively.
