  • Chronic silica nephropathy has been associated with tubulointerstitial disease, immune-mediated multisystem disease, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease. On the other hand, acute intentional exposure is extremely rare. The authors' experienced a 44-year-old man who took rapid cement hardener (sodium silicate) in a suicide attempt whilst in a drunken state. He visited the emergency department approximately 1 hour after ingestion. Information on the material was obtained after 3 L gastric lavage. The patient complained of a sore throat, epigastric pain, and swollen to blood tinged vomitus. Proton pump inhibitors, hemostats, steroid, and fluids were administered. Nine hours after ingestion, he was administered 200 mL hematochezia. Immediately after, a gas-troenterologist performed an endoscopic procedure that revealed diffuse hyperemic mucosa with a color change and variable sized ulceration in the esophagus, whole stomach, and duodenal $2^{nd}$ portion. Approximately 35 hours later, persistent oligouria and progressive worsening of the renal function parameters (BUN/Cr from 12.2/1.2 to 67.5/6.6 mg/dL) occurred requiring hemodialysis. The patient underwent 8 sessions of hemodialysis for 1 month and the BUN/Cr level increased to 143.2/11.2 mg/dL and decreased to 7.6/1.5 mg/dL. He was discharged safely from the hospital. Follow up endoscopy revealed a severe esophageal stricture and he underwent endoscopic bougie dilatation. Acute cement hardener (sodium silicate) intoxication can cause renal failure and strong caustic mucosal injury. Therefore, it is important to consider early hemodialysis and treatment to prevent gastrointestinal injury and remote esophageal stricture.

  • The clinckers were obtained when a raw mixture consisted of limestone, slags and gypsum was burned at 134$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, and 128$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes adding $CaF_2$ as a flux. The principal compounds of these clinkers were $C_3S_2$, $\beta-C_2S$, $C_1A_3{\bar{S}}$. To investigate hydration behavior, cements were made and hydrated at constant humidity cabinet (W/C=0.5 20$\pm 1^{\circ}C$). X-ray diffractometer, SEM, and conduction calorimeter were employed to examine the hydration behavior. The hydrates were mainly C-S-H, ettringite, $Ca(OH)_2$. By the hydration of $C_3S$ and $C_4A_3\bar{S}$, the needle-like ettringite filling the inner vacant spaces of the hardened body might contribute to the rapid-hardening and high-strength phenomena. Furthermore, the hardened body became stronger due to the hydration of $C_2S$ at later period. The addition of granulated blastfurnace slags have a potential to be a blended cement.

  • Generally, it is known that urethane injection is excellent in long-term durability and environment friendly for ground improvement. However, urethane grouting has short rise time thus the penetration distance from the injection point is so short. Therefore, urethane injection cannot be used for the site where requires ground improvement in deep location from the injection point. Other injection materials such as cement cannot be alternatives when rapid hardening is required. From this study, we improve disadvantage urethane injection by developing TAS method. From the field tests, it is ascertained that TAS increases injection distance over 10m, which is further than that of original urethane grouting. In addition, TAS has relatively short Rise-time compared to cement grouting thus instantaneous improvement can be mobilized right after the injection. Short Rise-time and long penetration distance provide excellent applicability for tunnel construction.

  • The aggregate, which does not satisfy the standard of KS F 2573, was selected for this investigation. The 28day compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete without pozzolan material was 21.7MPa, which was less than the strength of concrete made with crushed stone. However, the compressive strength at 28 days was improved by mixing early rapid hardening cement to the cement at the weight ratio of 2.5%. Furthermore, the compressive strength at 91 days and 180 days increased significantly by adding fly ash, slag powder, and diatom powder. The tensile strength of recycled aggregate concrete with pozzolan material also increased about 40% compared to the general concrete. Futhermore, the shrinkage and creep of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and slag powder was a little decreased that of recycled aggregate concrete with fly ash and diatom powder. Relationship between compressive strength and creep coefficient was shown to the linear relation like as ${\sigma}_c=-30CF+404$.

  • The objective of this study is to modify the mixture proportions of concrete that were developed for section enlargement strengthening elements using a specially designed binder composed of 5% ultra-rapid hardening cement, 10% polymer, and 85% ordinary portland cement in order to assign the self-compaction property to such concrete. The self-compaction abilities of concrete were estimated by the performance criteria specified in JSCE and EFNARC provions. Test results showed that the increase in the unit binder content at the consistent water-to-bider ratio led to increase in viscosity of fresh concrete but did not exhibit the decrease in the fluidity due to a greater viscosity. The mixture proportioning of self-compaction section enlargement concrete could be considered at the following conditions: unit binder contents of $430kg/m^3{\sim}470kg/m^3$ and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratios of 40%~46% at the water-to-binder ratio of 38%.

  • Very-early strength latex-modified concrete (VES-LMC) was developed for the purpose of fast-track overlay of a concrete bridge deck under heavy traffic, concentrated on the workability, durability, and strength gain so that it can be opened to the traffic only three hours after its placement. The mixture of VES-LMC might accompany very high heat of hydration at early-age because of its inherent rapid hardening property and could have susceptibility to autogenous shrinkage because of its relatively low water-cement ratio. This study evaluated the effect of the latex-cement ratio(L/C) both of the constant and variable slumps on the autogenous shrinkage of VES-LMC by carrying out simple temperature rise test and early-age shrinkage experiment. Test results are as follows: The latex contributes on the enhancement of the concrete durability but has little effect on its hydration and the accompanied heat of hydration in VES-LMC. Autogenous shrinkage increased with the increase in latex-cement ratio at variable slumps and its pattern followed regularly a logarithmic increase. However, the influence of water-cement ratio and latex-cement ratios for the test specimens at constant slump on early-age autogenous shrinkage property was found to be minor due to the simultaneous effect of the two experimental variables.

  • This study investigates the impact of water immersion and high temperature on the shear strength of cemented sand through direct shear tests. Standard Jumunjin sand was used and cemented with binders, such as ultra-rapid hardening cement and an epoxy aqueous solution. The binder was mixed at concentrations of 4%, 8%, or 12%. Subsequently, cylindrical cemented specimens with a diameter of 64 mm and height of 25 mm were produced using compaction. The curing period was three days, and the specimens were cured under dry air, immersion, and heating conditions. The heating condition involved subjecting the immersed specimens to a microwave oven three times for three minutes to achieve an internal temperature of approximately 90℃. Regardless of the binder type, the cohesion of the cemented sand increased with higher binder content, whereas the internal friction angle exhibited a slight increase or decrease. Compared with ultra-rapid hardening cemented sand, epoxy-cemented sand displayed an average cohesion that was five times higher and an internal friction angle that was 10° higher. Overall, irrespective of binder type, the shear strength decreased during water immersion and increased during heating. Notably, the epoxy-cemented sand exhibited a three-fold increase in cohesion and a more than 20° increase in the internal friction angle during heating.

  • The development of the oil refining industry has resulted in an annual 120 million tons of sulphur, which is a by-product of the desulphurization process. To exploit this abundance, the applications of sulphur must be expanded. as excellent durability of reuse of leftover sulphur which has high potential for utilization in construction materials, the study is actively in progress. Meanwhile, there has been active research on semi-rigid pavements that draw on the strengths and overcome the weaknesses of asphalt and concrete pavements. Acrylate is used to prevent cracking but involves a high cost, thus, an alternative material is required. As such, this study presents methods on the reuse of leftover sulphur and examines the engineering performance of grout containing sulfur polymer emulsion (SPE) for use in semi-rigid pavements. Our analysis shows that grout in which 30% of acrylate is replaced with SPE has superior properties in terms of time of flow and strength compared to regular grout. However, performance declined when more than 50% of acrylate was replaced by SPE, indicating that the optimum replacement level is 30%. Through SEM analysis, we found that grout with utra harding cement in this study at three hours had similar hydration properties to that of Type 1 Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) at seven days, and maintained the properties regardless of grout containing SPE. OPC and grout with a replacement level of 30% displayed similar levels of chloride invasion resistance, whereas grout without SPE was far less resistant. Within the scope of this paper, the optimum replacement level of acrylate with SPE was found to be 30% in consideration of various properties such as time of flow, strength, and chloride invasion resistance.

  • In this study, in order to develop organic-inorganic hybrid packaging materials(PM) of bike paths using blast furnace slag(BS) as industrial by-products, fundamental properties of organic-inorganic hybrid packaging materials were performed. Test result, the increase of Acryl emulsion polymer(AEP)/binder(B) ratios tends to delay the setting time, to increase the table flow, to decrease the strength by material segregation and to increase the length change. The optimal mix proportion of AEP decides on 40%(AEP/B) due to workability and high strength. The increase of BS replacement ratios also tends to delay the setting time, to separate AEP from B and to decrease the strength by material segregation. When BS replacement ratios were lower than 40%, they are satisfied with goal properties.

  • Grouting materials are used for the unification of superstructural and substructural body like bridge seat (shoe) or machinery pedestal and e.t.c by filling their intercalary voids. Accordingly, grouting materials have been developed and used mainly with products of high strength because those materials are constructed specially in a part receiving large or impact load. In this situation, the structural body constructed by grouting materials with high stiffness-centered (caused by high strength) products is apt to cause brittle failure when receiving over a limit stress and to cause cracks according to cumulative fatigue by continuous and cyclic load. In addition, grouting materials are apt to cause cracks by using too much rapid hardening agents that give rise to high heat of hydration to maintain high strength at early age. In this study, to overcome these problems, cement type grouting materials including powder of waste tire and resin as elastic materials which aim to be more stable construction and to be improvement of mother-body's unification are developed and endowed with properties of high toughness and high durability add to existing properties of high flowability, non-shrinkage and high strength. Besides, this study contribute to of for green construction materials for being possible recycling industrial waste like waste tire and flyash. On the whole, seven type mixing conditions are tested and investigated to choose the best mixing condition.
