In recent years, the emergence of nanotechnology and nanomaterial has created hopes to improve various properties of concrete. Nano silica as one of these materials has been introduced as a cement replacement material for concrete mixture in construction applications. It can modify the properties of concrete, due to high pozzolanic reactions and also making a denser microstructure. On the other hand, it is well recognized that the use of mineral admixtures such as silica fume affects the mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials. In addition, the superior performance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and self-consolidating mortars (SCM) over conventional concrete is generally related to their ingredients. This study investigates the effect of nano silica and silica fume on the compressive strength and chloride permeability of self-consolidating mortars. Tests include compressive strength, rapid chloride permeability test, water permeability, capillary water absorption, and surface electrical resistance, which carried out on twenty mortar mixtures containing zero to 6 percent of nano silica and silica fume. Results show that SCMs incorporating nano silica had higher compressive strength at various ages. In addition, results show that nano silica has enhanced the durability SCMs and reduced the chloride permeability.

In the world total boron reserve rating, Turkey is taken place on the first rank, meeting the demand of refined mineral and main boron chemicals. Development of the new boron products and production technologies, spreading the using area of the boron are the study topics which must be finically discussed. In this study, with the help of colemanite taken in ratio as (0%, 7.5%, 12.5%, and 17.5%) by being mixed by the cement, surfaces of the pumice aggregates have been covered. Permeability of the samples has been investigated by producing lightweight concrete with 400 dose with the help of aggregates covered with colemanite. For this, the experiments of water absorption, capillary water absorption, depth of penetration of water under pressure and rapid chloride permeability have been performed. In addition, analyses of the thin section of covered and uncovered pumice aggregates and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) have been investigated. When the control samples produced with the covered aggregates and concretes produced with colemanite covered aggregates are compared each other, it has been determined that special lightweight concretes whose values of capillary water absorption experiment, depth of penetration of water under pressure experiment and rapid chloride permeability are low can be produced.
Tests have been carried out on four concrete containing different levels of silica fume to measure their permeability coefficient using water and oxygen, chloride ion. The total cementitious content was 351kg/㎥, and the water/cementitious materials ratio was 0.55. The results show that a dramatic reduction in permeability of concrete containing silica fume occurs due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. Porosity estimates from mercury-intrusion porosimetry are used to develop an explanations for the water and air permeability reduction. And, results of the rapid permeability test showed that the resistance of concrete to the penetration of chloride ions increases significantly as a contents of silica-fume is increased. The current intensity passing through the concrete containing silica fume is presented from 664C to 2166C.
The rapid development of the construction industry in the world causes a rapid increase in the consumption of aggregate resources, which leads to the depletion of existing aggregate reserves. The use of recycled aggregate in the production of concrete and mortar may be a good solution to reduce the use of natural raw materials and to reduce demolition waste in the environment. In this study investigating the use of recycled aggregate in mortar production, mortar mixtures were produced by substituting 0%, 25%, 50% and 100% fine recycled aggregate (FRA) instead of natural aggregate. The effect of 20% and 40% fly ash (FA) substitutes on cement mortar performance was also investigated. Compressive and flexural strength, drying shrinkage, abrasion resistance, water absorption and capillary water absorption were investigated on the produced mortars. The increase in the use of FRA reduced the compressive and flexural strengths of mortars. While the capillarity coefficients, water absorption, rapid chloride permeability and drying shrinkage of the mortars increased with the increase in the use of FRA, the effect of the use of fly ash on the rate of increase remained lower. The increased use of FRA has improved abrasion resistance as well.
Structure surfaces damaged due to many causes are repaired by several special mortars. But wide studies about the permeability of these mortars were rarely conducted. In this study compressive strength test, flexural strength test and bond strength test of these mortars were conducted. And chloride ion penetration test was also conducted to explore the permeability charcteristics of selected repair mortars. This test was carried out following the standard ASTM C1202-91. Colouriemtric penetration depth can be drawn from these test results using a relationship equation between colourimetric penetration depth and charge passed which C. Andrade suggested. Diffusion coefficient can be calculated by CTH rapid method. To the end, the present study can provide a firm base for the application of repair mortars to concrete structures.
Due to seawater's physical and chemical deterioration effects on concrete structures, it is crucial to investigate the durability of these structures in marine environments. In some conditions, concrete structures are exposed to seawater from the first days of construction or because of the lack of potable water, part of the concrete curing stage is done with seawater. In this research, the effects of exposure to seawater after 7 days of curing in standard conditions were evaluated. To improve the durability of concrete, fly ash has been used as a substitute for a part of the cement in the mixing design. For this purpose, 5, 15, and 30% of the mixing design cement were replaced with type F fly ash, and the samples were examined after curing in seawater. The resistance of concrete against chloride ion penetration based on the rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT), water permeability based on the depth of water penetration under pressure, and water absorption test was done. The changes in the compressive strength of concrete in different curing conditions were also investigated. The results show that the curing in seawater has slightly reduced concrete resistance to chloride ion permeation. In the long-term, samples containing FA cured in seawater had up to 10% less resistance to chloride ion penetration. The amount of reduction in chloride ion penetration resistance was more for samples without FA. Whiles, for both curing conditions in the long-term up to 15%, FA improved the chloride ion penetration resistance up to 40%. Curing in seawater slightly increased the penetration depth of water under pressure in samples containing FA, while this increase was up to 12% for samples without FA. In the long-term the compressive strength of samples cured in seawater is not much different from the compressive strength of samples cured in plain water, while at the age of 28 days, due to seawater salts' accelerating effects the difference is more noticeable.

Corrosion in RCC structures is one of the most important factors that affects the structure's durability and subsequently causes reduction of serviceability. The most severe cause of this corrosion is chloride attack. Hence, to prevent this to happen proper understanding of the chloride penetration into concrete structures is necessary. In this study, first the mechanism of this chloride attack is understood and various parameters affecting the process are identified. Then an FEM modelling is carried out for the chloride diffusion process. The effects of fly ash and slag on the diffusion coefficient and chloride penetration depth in various mixes of concretes are also analyzed through integrating Virtual RCPT Lab and FEM.
This study focused on the investigation of strength development and permeability of LMC(Latex Modified Concrete) and RSLMC(Rapid-Setting Cement Latex Modified Concrete) as the latex content, cement types and w/c ratio changed. The compressive strength of latex modified concrete decreased slightly and the flexural strength increased quitely at 15% of latex content. This may be due to the flexibility of latex filled in voids and interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, respectively. The permeability test results showed that the permeability of LMC was considerably lower than that of conventional concrete. Results of chloride permeability test, for RSLMC indicated very low at an early age caused by the early formation of needle-shape ettringites and latex film.
