  • This paper presents a variable block size motion estimation (ME) algorithm and hardware architectures dedicated to H.264/AVC. Proposed ME architecture can achieve real-time processing for 720$\times$480@30Hz with search range of [-64, +63] in the horizontal and [-32, +31] in the vertical direction at integer-pel accuracy and upto 7 reference frames at the operating frequency of 54MHz.

  • A new EMI estimation technique concerned with a PDP system is presented. A physical circuit model is developed which can fairly well describe the AC-PDP system. Then EMIs are determined by exploiting Hertzian dipole antenna model. The simulation results are experimentally verified with the test panel. The AC PDP system was measured in the frequency range of 30MHz ~ 300MHz in a semi-anechoic chamber, according to CISPR 13 code. Thereby, it is shown that the proposed technique can be usefully employed for EMI reduction.

Character Segmentation in Chinese Handwritten Text Based on Gap and Character Construction Estimation

  • Character segmentation is a preprocessing step in many offline handwriting recognition systems. In this paper, Chinese characters are categorized into seven different structures. In each structure, the character size with the range of variations is estimated considering typical handwritten samples. The component removal and merge criteria are presented to remove punctuation symbols or to merge small components which are part of a character. Finally, the criteria for segmenting the adjacent characters concerning each other or overlapped are proposed.

  • As the search range increases, most fast ME algorithms can not keep the performance comparable to the full search BMA. In this paper, we propose a new fast motion estimation method which locates the small search area for a block of the current frame. This method is based on interframe correlation of motion vectors as well as intraframe correlation. Especially, the proposed algorithm outperforms other fast methods when the motion is very fast or complex. It drastically reduces computational complexity while maintaining good performance compared with the conventional FS-BMA.

  • In this paper we introduce some adaptive M-estimators using selector statistics to estimate the center of symmetric and continuous underlying distributions. This selector statistics is based on the idea of Hogg(1983) and Hogg et. al. (1988) who used averages of some order statistics to discriminate underlying distributions. In this paper, we use the functions of sample quantiles as selector statistics and determine the suitable quantile points based on maximizing the distance index to discriminate distributions under consideration. In Monte Carlo study, this robust estimation method works pretty good in wide range of underlying distributions.

  • In this study, the algorithm which can estimate displacements from the acceleration data is developed. For proving the validity of this study, the calculated displacements are compared with the measured displacements through the forced vibration tests in the laboratory. So the sampling frequency and filtering range for the estimation of the displacements are proposed. Finally, these results are applied to estimate displacements from the acceleration data obtained from the real bridge.

  • The paper deals with the control of the synchronous reluctance machine without position senser. A method for the computation of the transformation angle out of terminal voltages and currents is presented. The injection of test signals allows operation at zero speed. Fundamental for this control scheme is the angle estimation method over the whole operating range including field-weakening is discussed in detail. The implementation of the angle estimation method in a rotor-oriented control scheme and practical results are demonstrated.

  • A practical real-time LOS rate estimator is proposed to handle the time-varying measurement noise statistics. To calculate the optimal Kalman gain, the algebraic transformation method is taken into account. By using the algebraic transformation, the differential algebraic Riccati equation(DARE) regarding estimation error covariance is replaced by the simple algebraic Riccati equation(ARE). The proposed LOS estimation filter gain is only a function of relative range. Consequently, the proposed method is computationally very efficient and suitable for embedded environment.

  • In this paper, we present a method for estimating of position and velocity of a moving target by using the range and the bearing measurements from multiple sensors of aiming unit. In many cases, conventional low cost gyro sensor and a portable laser range finder(LRF) degrade the accuracy of estimation. To enhance these problems, we propose two methods. The first is background image tracking and the other is principal component analysis (PCA). The background tracking is used to assist the low cost gyro censor. And the PCA is used to cope with the problems of a portable LRF. In this paper, we prove that our method is robust with respect to low-frequency, biased and noisy inputs. We also present a comparison between our method and the extended Kalman filter(EKF).
