Electrical Insulation Properties of Nanocomposites with SiO2 and MgO Filler

  • In this paper, we attempt to improve the electrical characteristics of epoxy resin at high temperature (above $80^{\circ}C$) by adding magnesium oxide (MgO), which has high thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the dispersion of specimens with added MgO reveals that they are evenly dispersed without concentration. The dielectric breakdown characteristics of $SiO_2$ and MgO nanocomposites are tested by measurements at different temperatures to investigate the filler's effect on the dielectric breakdown characteristics. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added $SiO_2$ decreases slowly below $80^{\circ}C$ (low temperature) but decreases rapidly above $80^{\circ}C$ (high temperature). However, the gradient of the dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO is slow at both low and high temperatures. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with 0.4 wt% $SiO_2$ is the best among the specimens with added $SiO_2$, and that of specimens with 3.0 wt% and 5.0 wt% MgO is the best among those with added MgO. Moreover, the dielectric strength of specimens with 3.0 wt% MgO at high temperatures is approximately 53.3% higher than that of specimens with added $SiO_2$ at $100^{\circ}C$, and that of specimens with 5.0 wt% of MgO is approximately 59.34% higher under the same conditions. The dielectric strength of MgO is believed to be superior to that of $SiO_2$ owing to enhanced thermal radiation because the thermal conductivity rate of MgO (approximately 42 $W/m{\cdot}K$) is approximately 32 times higher than that of $SiO_2$ (approximately 1.3 $W/m{\cdot}K$). We also confirmed that the allowable breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO at $100^{\circ}C$ is within the error range when the breakdown probability of all specimens is 40%. A breakdown probability of up to 40% represents a stable dielectric strength in machinery and apparatus design.

Performance of Underwater Communication in Low Salinity Layer at the Western Sea of Jeju (제주도 서부 해역의 저염수층을 고려한 수중통신 성능)

  • The sound speed of seawater can be calculated by the empirical formula as a function of temperature, salinity and pressure. It is little affected by salinity because the average salinity is 34 psu and varies within a few psu seasonally and spatially in the ocean. Recently, low-salinity water of 24 psu flows into the western sea area of Jeju Island due to the flood of the Yangtze River in China during summer, affecting sound speed profile. In this paper, it was analyzed how environmental changes affected to the underwater communication - the sound speed of low-salinity water was calculated, and the communication channel was estimated by the simulated acoustic rays while the transmitting and receiving depth and the range were varied with and without the low-salinity layer. And The BER (Bit error rate) was calculated by BPSK(Binary phase shift key) modulation and the effects of the low-salinity water on the BER was investigated. The sound speed profile was changed to have positive slope by the low-salinity layer at the sub-surface up to 20 m of depth, forming acoustic wave propagation channel at the sub-surface resulting in the decrease of most of the BER Consequently, this paper suggests that it is important to consider changes of the ocean environment for correctly analyzing the underwater communication and the detection capability.

Novel Intensity-Based Fiber Optic Vibration Sensor Using Mass-Spring Structure (질량-스프링 구조를 이용한 새로운 광세기 기반 광섬유 진동센서)

  • In this paper, a novel intensity-based fiber optic vibration sensor using a mass-spring structure, which consists of four serpentine flexure springs and a rectangular aperture within a proof mass, is proposed and its feasibility test is given by the simulation and experiment. An optical collimator is used to broaden the beam which is modulated by the displacement of the rectangular aperture within the proof mass. The proposed fiber optic vibration sensor has been analyzed and designed in terms of the optical and mechanical parts. A mechanical structure has been designed using theoretical analysis, mathematical modeling, and 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation. The relative aperture displacement according to the base vibration is given using FEM simulation, while the output beam power according to the relative displacement is measured by experiment. The simulated sensor sensitivity of $15.731{\mu}W/G$ and detection range of ${\pm}6.087G$ are given. By using reference signal, the output signal with 0.75% relative error shows a good stability. The proposed vibration sensor structure has the advantages of a simple structure, low cost, and multi-point sensing characteristic. It also has the potential to be made by MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) technology.

Impact of GPS-RO Data Assimilation in 3DVAR System on the Typhoon Event (태풍 수치모의에서 GPS-RO 인공위성을 사용한 관측 자료동화 효과)

  • In order to simulate a typhoon precisely, the satellite observation data has been assimilated using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting model) three-Dimensional Variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. The observation data used in 3DVAR was GPS Radio Occultation (GPS-RO) data which is loaded on Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. The refractivity of Earth is deduced by temperature, pressure, and water vapor. GPS-RO data can be obtained with this refractivity when the satellite passes the limb position with respect to its original orbit. In this paper, two typhoon cases were simulated to examine the characteristics of data assimilation. One had been occurred in the Western Pacific from 16 to 25 October, 2015, and the other had affected Korean Peninsula from 22 to 29 August, 2012. In the simulation results, the typhoon track between background (BGR) and assimilation (3DV) run were significantly different when the track appeared to be rapidly change. The surface wind speed showed large difference for the long forecasting time because the GPS-RO data contained much information in the upper level, and it took a time to impact on the surface wind. Along with the modified typhoon track, the differences in the horizontal distribution of accumulated rain rate was remarkable with the range of -600~500 mm. During 7 days, we estimated the characteristics between daily assimilated simulation (3DV) and initial time assimilation (3DV_7). Because 3DV_7 demonstrated the accurate track of typhoon and its meteorological variables, the differences in two experiments have found to be insignificant. Using observed rain rate data at 79 surface observatories, the statistical analysis has been carried on for the evaluation of quantitative improvement. Although all experiments showed underestimated rain amount because of low model resolution (27 km), the reduced Mean Bias and Root-Mean-Square Error were found to be 2.92 mm and 4.53 mm, respectively.

  • The passive emitter location method using TDOA and FDOA measurements has higher accuracy comparing to the single TDOA or FDOA based method. Moreover, it is able to estimate the velocity vector of a moving platform. Recently, several non-iterative methods were suggested using the nuisance parameter but the common reference sensor is needed for each pair of sensors. They show also relatively low performance in the case of a long range between the sensor groups and the emitter. To solve this, we derive the estimation method of the position and velocity of a moving platform based on the Gauss-Newton method. In addition, to analyze the estimation performance of the position and velocity, respectively, we decompose the CRLB matrix into each subspace. Simulation results show the estimation performance of the derived method and the CEP planes according to the given geometry of the sensors.

A Study on the Rollover Behavior of SUV and Collision Velocity Prediction using PC-Crash Program (PC-Crash를 이용한 SUV의 전복사고 거동 및 충돌속도 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Along with the recent increase in traffic volume of vehicles, accidents involving rollover of vehicles have been rapidly increased, resulting in an increase casualties. And to prevent this, various technologies such as vehicle crash test equipment and analysis program development have been advanced. In this study, the applied vehicle model is FORD EXPLORER model, and PC-Crash program for vehicle collision analysis is used to predict the rollover accident behavior of SUV and the collision velocity. Compared with the actual rollover behavior of SUV through the FMVSS No 208 regulations, the analysis results showed similar results, the characteristics of the collision velocity and roll angle showed a tendency that the error rate slightly increased after 1000 msec. Then, as a result of considering using the database of NHTSA, it is shown that the rollover accident occur most frequently in the range of the collision velocity of 15~77 km/h and the collision angle of $22{\sim}74^{\circ}$. And it is possible to estimate the vehicle speed and collision time when the vehicle roof is broken by reconstructing the vehicle starting position, the roof failure position and the stop position by applying the actual accident case.

Subpixel Shift Estimation in Noisy Image Using Iterative Phase Correlation of A Selected Local Region (잡음 영상에서 국부 영역의 반복적인 위상 상관도를 이용한 부화소 이동량 추정방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a subpixel shift estimation method using phase correlation with a local region for the registration of noisy images. Phase correlation is commonly used to estimate the subpixel shift between images, which is derived from analyzing shifted and downsampled images. However, when the images are affected by additive white Gaussian noise and aliasing artifacts, the estimation error is increased. Thus, instead of using the whole image, the proposed method uses a specific local region that is less affect by noises. In addition, to improve the estimation accuracy, iterative phase correlation is applied between selected local regions rather than using a fitting function. the restricted range is determined by analyzing the maximum peak and the two adjacent values of the inverse Fourier transform of the normalized cross power spectrum. In the experiments, the proposed method shows higher accuracy in registering noisy images than the other methods. Thus, the edge-sharpness and clearness in the super-resolved image is also improved.

  • When the eldery with limited mobility and disabled use a wheelchairs to move, it can cause decreased exercise ability like decline muscular strength in upper limb and lower extremities. The disabled people suffers with spinal cord injuries or post stroke hemiplegia are easily exposed to secondary problems due to limited mobility. In this paper, We designed intelligent wheelchair robot system for upper limb and lower extremities exercise/rehabilitation considering the characteristics of these severely disabled person. The system consists of an electric wheelchair, biometrics module for Identification characteristics of users, upper limb and lower extremities rehabilitation. In this paper, describes the design and configurations and of developed robot. Also, In order to verify the system function, conduct performance evaluation targeting non-disabled about risk context analysis with biomedical signal change and upper limb and lower extremities rehabilitation over wheelchair robot move. Consequently, it indicate sufficient tracking performance for rehabilitation as at about 86.7% average accuracy for risk context analysis and upper limb angle of 2.5 and lower extremities angle of 2.3 degrees maximum error range of joint angle.

A Development of Dielectric Measurement System for Detecting Physical Parameters of Ground in Subsurface Dam (지하댐 지반 물성치 측정을 위한 유전율 측정 시스템 개발)

  • The authors designed a new technique to measure dielectric constant of a soil media by Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) system and its measurement sensor probe with different length such as 7m, 10cm and 15cm for estimating the variations of dielectric constant. Measurement of dielectric constant of soil material is possible to measure an interference wave generated by between incidence wave and reflection wave which are detected to electro-magnetic wave through the directional coupler at the high frequency range,0.1 to 1.7GHz, by FDR system. The obtained experimental results verified that the technique is very promising for non-destructive and continuous soil volumetric water content measurement monitoring in a laboratory. The relationship between the soil volumetric water content and the dielectric constant of soil media (standard sand) was expressed by a single regression ewe independent of soil texture at a small experimental error. Also the derived regression curve coincided well with that obtained by Topp curve.

Usefulness Evaluation on the Treatment Plan of Tomotherapy and VMAT in Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer (전립선암의 방사선치료에서 토모테라피와 VMAT의 치료계획에 따른 유용성 평가)

  • In this study, to evaluate the usefulness of the treatment plan of tomotherapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in the radiotherapy for prostate cancer, the absorbed dose, dose volume histogram (DVH), treatment efficiency, and the results of dose verification accuracy using MapCHECK2 were compared and analyzed. Of the prostate cancer patients who underwent tomotherapy treatment in the Radiologic Oncology of H University Hospital between July 2014 and December 2014, 12 patients were randomly selected. As a result of analyzing the absorbed dose and DVH, both radiologic treatment plans showed slight differences in the treatment of the cancer tissues and the bladder, but the difference was in the error range of -5% to +3%, and did not exceed the side effect guideline or the tolerance dose limit. VMAT showed higher treatment efficiency than tomotherapy with a 2.5 times shorter treatment time and a 10.3 times less monitor unit (MU). Both showed 95% or higher dose accuracy satisfying the standard. VMAT showed 2.3% higher efficiency than tomotherapy. In both tomotherapy and VMAT, appropriate doses were absorbed for cancer tissues, and did not exceed the tolerance dose for normal tissues showing no significant difference in dose distribution. However, considering the shorter treatment time, lower total MU, and better treatment efficiency and dose verification accuracy, VMAT may be more useful than tomotherapy in cancer treatments.
