  • The transient incompressible flow behind the widely-spaced co-axial jet is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). This numerical approach is based on the Lagrangian approach for the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, utilizing vortex elements to account for the convection and diffusion processes. The effects of the mass flow rate of an annular air jet and a central fuel jet on the co-axial jet flow dynamics is investigated. To validate the present procedure, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data the present procedure, the numerical results are compared with the available experimental data in terms of the centerline and off-centerline profiles of the mean axial velocity. Discrepancies between the RVM results and the measurements are discussed in detail.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple Double random phase encryption (DRPE)-based orthogonal encoding technique for color image encryption. In the proposed orthogonal encoding technique, a color image is decomposed into red, green, and blue components before encryption, and the three components are independently encrypted with DRPE using the same key in order to decrease the complexity of encryption and decryption. Then, the encrypted data are encoded with a Hadamard matrix that has the orthogonal property. The purpose of the proposed orthogonal encoding technique is to improve the security of DRPE using the same key at the cost of a little complexity. The proposed orthogonal encoder consists of simple linear operations, so that it is easy to implement. We also provide the simulation results in order to show the effects of the proposed orthogonal encoding technique.

  • In order to investigate the stochastic behavior of Mindlin plate under imperfection in the material and geometrical parameters, a stochastic finite element formulation is proposed. The effects of inter-correlations between random parameters on the response variability are also observed. The contribution from the random Poisson ratio is taken into account adopting a stochastic decomposition scheme. which expands the constitutive matrix into an infinite series of sub-matrices. In order to demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed scheme, a square plate with simple and fixed support is taken as an example, and the results are compared with those given in previous research in the literature as well as with the results of Monte Carlo analysis.

  • This paper discusses the issues regarding an abnormal V-shaped error confronting algebraic-based deconvolution process. Deconvolution was applied to an analysis of the effects of the Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) and Random Dopant Fluctuation (RDF) on the overall SRAM margin variations. This paper proposes a technique to suppress the problematic phenomena in the algebraic-based RDF/RTN deconvolution process. The proposed technique can reduce its relative errors by $10^{10}$ to $10^{16}$ fold, which is a sufficient reduction for avoiding the abnormal ringing errors in the RTN deconvolution process. The proposed algebraic-based analyses allowed the following: (1) detection of the truncating point of the TD-MV distributions by the screening test, and (2) predicting the MV-shift-amount by the assisted circuit schemes needed to avoid the out of specs after shipment.

  • In clinical studies, different types of outcomes (e.g. repeated measures data and time-to-event data) for the same subject tend to be observed, and these data can be correlated. For example, a response variable of interest can be measured repeatedly over time on the same subject and at the same time, an event time representing a terminating event is also obtained. Joint modelling using a shared random effect is useful for analyzing these data. Inferences based on marginal likelihood may involve the evaluation of analytically intractable integrations over the random-effect distributions. In this paper we propose a joint HGLM approach for analyzing such outcomes using the HGLM (hierarchical generalized linear model) method based on h-likelihood (i.e. hierarchical likelihood), which avoids these integration itself. The proposed method has been demonstrated using various numerical studies.

  • In this paper, a new space vector RPPWM (Random Position PWM) is proposed. In the proposed RPPWM, each of three phase pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. Based on the space vector modulation technique, the duty ratio of the pulses is calculated. Along with the randomization of the PWM pulses, we can obtain the effects of spread spectra of voltage, current as in the case of randomly changed switching frequency. To verify the validity of the proposed RPPWM, simulation study was tried using Matlab/simulink. The main model described in Simulink block diagrams includes the space vector modulation block, pulse position randomization block, inverter block, 3 phase induction motor block, and so on. By the simulation study, the harmonics of the output voltage, and the current of inverter are predicted in different PWM methods- SVPWM, LLPWM, proposed RPPWM.

  • Ships and ocean structures are subjected to random loads caused by irregular waves. The irregularity of amplitude from random loading affects on fatigue crack growth and fatigue life. However the effects of irregularity of loading on fatigue including random loading have not been explained exactly. Therefore in this paper crack growth tests on DENT specimens under constant-amplitude loading including a single tensile overload are conducted to investigate the effect of overload on crack growth rate. The size of plastic zone and crack growth rate before and after a single tensile overloading are measured using ESPI system. Crack growth retardation model that is characterized by crack growth length and the size of plastic zone was proposed and compared with test result. From the research, the validity of proposed model is examined on crack growth retardation, and consequently fatigue life.

  • An efficient method for generating floor response spectra with the structure-equipment interaction effects is proposed. Floor response spectra are computed from a prescribed ground response spectrum by a random vibration approach. Transfer function of equipment response for earthquake excitation is constructed directly from the modal properties of the individual structures. The method also can account for the nonproportional damping characteristics of the combined system.

  • Twin studies are one of the most widely used methods for quantifying the influence of genetic and environmental factors on some traits such as a life span or a disease. In this paper we propose a genetic mixed linear model for twin survival time data, which allows us to separate the genetic component from the environmental component. Inferences are based upon the hierarchical likelihood (h-likelihood), which provides a statistically efficient and simple unified framework for various random-effect models. We also propose a simple and fast computation method for analyzing a large data set on twin survival study. The new method is illustrated to the survival data in Swedish Twin Registry. A simulation study is carried out to evaluate the performance.

  • Mixed-effect Poisson regression models are widely used for analysis of correlated count data such as those found in longitudinal studies. In this paper, we consider kernel extensions with semiparametric fixed effects and parametric random effects. The estimation is through the penalized likelihood method based on kernel trick and our focus is on the efficient computation and the effective hyperparameter selection. For the selection of hyperparameters, cross-validation techniques are employed. Examples illustrating usage and features of the proposed method are provided.
