In the paper, algorithms for disturbance observers are newly presented in the time-domain. Attention is paid to observing a ramp disturbance by introducing an integral term to the output equation of a constant disturbance observer. In order to reduce the sensitivity to the measurement noise, the disturbance observer is combined with the state observer. It will be shown that the estimation dynamics can be arbitrarily chosen by assigning the eigenvalues of a characteristic equation. Also, we provide the analysis of observer behaviors subject to non-ramp-style disturbances. Finally, we propose the generalized disturbance observer that accurately estimates disturbances of higher order in time series expansion.
Ramp metering is one of the most efficient and widely used control methods for an intelligent transportation management system on a freeway. Its objective is to control and upgrade freeway traffic by regulating the number of vehicles entering the freeway entrance ramp, in such a way that not only the alleviation of the congestion but also the smoothing of the traffic flow around the desired density level can be achieved for the maintenance of the maximum mainline throughput. When the cycle of the signal detection is larger than that of the system process, the density tracking problem needs to be considered in the form of the discrete-time system. Therefore, a discrete-time sliding mode control method is proposed for the ramp metering problem in the presence of both input constraint in the on-ramp and exogenous disturbance in the off-ramp considering the random behavior of the driver. Simulations were performed using a validated second-order macroscopic traffic flow model in Matlab environment and the simulation results indicate that proposed control method can achieve better performance than previously well-known ALINEA strategy in the sense that mainstream flow throughput is maximized and congestion is alleviated even in the presence of input constraint and exogenous disturbance.
The work presented here deals with controller design by graphical method based on proportional control ramp response. The design aims at the improvement of transient response, disturbance rejection capability, steady-state error reduction with stability preservation. The first step is to generate tracking-error curve with proportional control only and decide the added error signal shape on the error curve. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is confirmed through the simulation and experiment.
Disturbance Accommodating Attitude control logic for 3-axis stabilized spacecraft is designed and compared with PIID control logic. PID controller provide the zero steady error for constant disturbances. PIID controller detect and cancel disturbances upto the ramp input. PID control logic is designed as the main control logic. We designed the disturbance observer to detect the effect of disturbance using the sinusoidal function. The detected disturbance are compensated by the additional control logic. The comparison simulation is conducted between PIID and PIID with DAC. The simulation results show that PIID with DAC shows the better attitude pointing accuracy.
In this paper, a novel traffic flow control method based-on ramp metering and speed regulation using an adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) method along with a deadzoned parameter adaptation law is proposed at a stochastic macroscopic level traffic environment, where the influence of the density and speed disturbances is accounted for in the traffic dynamic equations. The goal of this paper is to design a local traffic flow controller using both ramp metering and speed regulation based on ASMC, in order to achieve the desired density and speed for the maintenance of the maximum mainline throughput against disturbances in practice. The proposed method is advantageous in that it can improve the traffic flow performance compared to the traditional methods using only ramp metering, even in the presence of ramp storage limitation and disturbances. Moreover, a prior knowledge of disturbance magnitude is not required in the process of designing the controller unlike the conventional sliding mode controller. A stability analysis is presented to show that the traffic system under the proposed traffic flow control method is guaranteed to be uniformly bounded and its ultimate bound can be adjusted to be sufficiently small in terms of deadzone. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated under different traffic situations (i.e., different initial traffic status), in the sense that the proposed control method is capable of stabilizing traffic flow better than the previously well-known Asservissement Lineaire d'Entree Autoroutiere (ALINEA) strategy and also feedback linearization control (FLC) method.
A load/unload mechanism is applied to most small form factor hard disk drives. Loading velocity is ones of the most important factors to ensure the reliability of the load/unload operations. Especially, the lower the flying height of the head becomes, the more important the accuracy of the loading velocity control becomes. Because there is no sensor during the load/unload operations, BEMF voltage is used to sense the head velocity. To measure BEMF voltage, a simple circuit is added to the load/unload HDD control system. Overall acceptable results are obtained by using the simple PI controller but the errors from the target velocity occur when the head moves along the ramp and then reaches the disk. Feedforward profile and disturbance observer are used to remove those errors effectively.

As semiconductor processes require several nanometers precision, the importance of motor control is increasing in semiconductor equipment. Due to unpredictable uncertainties such as friction and mechanical vibrations achieving precise position control in semiconductor processes is challenging. The internal model principle-based controller is a control technique that ensures robust steady-state performance by incorporating a model of the reference and disturbance. The disturbance observer-based controller is a prominent robust control technique implemented to cope with various nonlinearities and uncertainties. Provided that the two controllers can be designed to exhibit equivalent performance under certain conditions, this paper demonstrates through experiments that they yield identical results for the case of a BLDC position control problem. The experimental results also indicate that they can offer enhanced robustness compared with the conventional PID controller in the presence of a time-varying disturbance.
This paper is concerned with the design of a robust tracking controller using a state observer on a robotic manipulator under the disturbance. The controller is designed to follow a step or ramp reference input without steady state error in the presence of a disturbance and a system parameter variation. In most cases, since all the state vectors are not measured, unmeasurable state vectors must be estimated or reconstructed. A reduced order observer is proposed to estimate unmeasurable state vectors of the non-linear system. Some problems are caused by the Coulomb friction, the disturbance, and the spring effect of a link between the drive motor and the manipulator arm. The state variables, directly measured and estimated by the reduced order observer, are fed back to the controller. When the robot system exhibits the 'limit cycle, the feedback gains initially obtained by optimal control theory are changed. As a result, the limit cycle is eliminated by the new controller gains,
In this paper, simulation results of a robust digital tracking controller on a robotic manipulator are presented. The objective is to follow a ramp reference input with zero steady state error in the presence of a disturbance and system parameter variations. Some of the difficulties are caused by the Coulomb frictions, the disturbance due to the gravitational pull, the spring effect of a link between the drive motor and the manipulator arm. Another difficulty is that, because of the non-differentiable Coulomb friction, the digital control system cannot be represented as a discrete system. It is thus necessary to design the controller based on a discrete-continuous hybrid model. The controller is based on feeding back the state variables and augmenting the system by addition discrete integrators. The feedback gain parameters are obtained by applying the quadratic optimal control theory and then choosing the new weighting matrices to eliminate the limit cycle by using the describing function method for hybrid system.

When the program voltage is applied to a word line, a part of the boosted channel charge in inhibited bit lines is lost due to the coupling between the string select line (SSL) and the adjacent word line. This phenomenon causes the program disturbance in the cells connected to the inhibited bit lines. This program disturbance becomes more serious, as the word line pitch is decreased. To reduce the word line coupling, the rising edge of the word-line voltage waveform was changed from a pulse step into a ramp waveform with a controlled slope. The word-line ramping circuit was composed of a timer, a decoder, a 8 b D/A converter, a comparator, and a high voltage switch pump (HVSP). The ramping voltage was generated by using a stepping waveform. The rising time and the stepping number of the word-line voltage for programming were set to $\mutextrm{m}-$ and 8, respectively,. The ramping circuit was used in a 512Mb NAND flash memory fabricated with a $0.15-\mutextrm{m}$ CMOS technology, reducing the SSL coupling voltage from 1.4V into a value below 0.4V.
