  • In order to establish an appropriate spray schedule to reduce the infection, 11 kinds of chemicals were tested for their properties on the inhibition of spore germination at the surface of apple fruits and the duration of the inhibitory effect after spray of each chemical was examined from late June to early September with basically 10 day intervals. Actual control efficacy of each chemical by the 8 successive spray and the patterns of waterborne spore dispersals during that periods were also examined. Combining those results with the meteorological observation data, actual control efficacy of each chemical in the given periods could be estimated. It was revealed that folpet, Brodeaux mixture, mancozeb, oxine copper and imminoctadine-triacetate could be used at any time during the possible infection periods. Captan and dithianon could also be used except the rainy season due to the short duration of inhibitory efficacy against spore germination under heavy rain. However, the usefulness of propineb, benomyl and chlorothalonil against the apple white rot could not be demonstrated in this experiment. Thiram, even though has not been used for apple white rot, can also be used before or after the rainy season to control not only white rot but also alternaria blotch.

  • This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of non-point pollutants discharge in a small Rural watershed. For this purpose, the typical rural area in Gongju city was selected as a research site. Water quality and water quantity data in the stream and the precipitation of the watershed were analyzed periodically from May 1 to August 31 in 2005. Also, pollutant loads were estimated using these data. As a result, the mean concentrations of BOD, TN and TP in the stream were 3.16, 3.20, 0.236 mg/L rainy season and 0.93, 2.75, 0.058 mg/L in normal survey season respectively. The estimation of non-point pollutants discharge loads were shown that BOD was 5,154.2kg, T-N was 9,164.7kg, T-P was 308.4kg, and SS was 117,163.2kg from July to August. That means above of 90% of non-point pollutants discharge was occurred in rainy season.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of freshwater discharge on benthic community in Nakdong estuaries. The sediment was dominated by sand except few channels where heterogenetic sediment composition was observed. Sediment composition was rarely affected by freshwater discharge during the rainy season; however, organic content in the sediment slightly increased after the rainy season. Macrobenthic species composition differed spatially. For instance, species composition decreased after the rainy season near the barrage. Benthic community analysis revealed three groups, in which the first group was found between barrage and sand bars located at the mouth of estuary, the second group was observed outside the sand bars, and the last group was found in the channel. Opportunistic benthic species indicative of organic pollution, such as Sinocorophium sinensis, Magelona japonica, and Heteromastus filiformis, dominated areas close to the barrage. Organic pollution by freshwater discharge appears to be responsible for the emergence of opportunistic benthic species, and this influenced areas from the mouth of bay to sand bars. Outside the sand bars, freshwater discharge did not seem to have affected species composition.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the water-dispersible clay content of paddy soils over the country in the summer rainy season as affected by cultivated years using heavy agro-machinery and soil properties such as texture and exchangeable sodium percentage. METHODS AND RESULTS: Water-dispersible clay content of 16 soil series of Korean paddy soils over the country were investigated in summer rainy season from July to August, 2006 by Middleton's method. Water-dispersible clay content ranged from non-detected to 4.8%, showing maximum value from the fine textured soils and high clay dispersibility in average from the coarse textured soils. Longer cultivated years using agro-machinery more than 40 hp result in higer water-dispersible clay content for 60% of studied paddy soils with less than 5% of exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP). Exceptionally, soils with relatively big difference of ESP at about 10 percent showed higher water-dispersible clay content with higher ESP. CONCLUSION: Long years of cultivation using agro-machinery with more than 40 hp enhanced water-dispersiblility of clay in approximately 60% of the studied paddy fields except for salt-affected soils.

  • Recently, the utility of UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) for a smart farm using various sensors and ICT (Information & Communications Technology) is expected. In particular, it has proven its effectiveness as an outdoor crop monitoring method through various indices and is being studied in various fields. This study analyzes damage to crops caused by natural disasters and measures the damage area of rice plants. To this end, data is acquired using BG-NIR (Blue Green_Near Infrared Red) and RGB sensors, and image analysis and NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) index performed to review crop damage caused by in the rainy season. Also, point cloud data based on image analysis is generated, and damage is measured by comparing data before and after the typhoon through an inspection map. As a result of the study, the growth and rainy season damage of rice was examined through NDWI index analysis, and the damage area caused by typhoon was measured by analysis of the inspection map.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate water quality and pollutant loads on small agricultural watershed in Jeonbuk province. The EC level of investigated watershed ranged from 0.07 to 0.52 dS/m, BOD level ranged from 0.1 to 5.0 mg/L, and $COD_{Cr}$ level ranged from 0.6 to 17.7 mg/L. As above, contents of water quality indicators covered wide range, but each indicator was alike in mean content every other year. The contents of EC, $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;K^+\;and\;Na^+$ were decreased in rainy season, but the contents of BOD, $COD_{Cr},\;COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P were not greatly different as compared to dry season. And high content of SS showed substantial sediments near the surface flow out and influence on water system in rainy season. The pollutant loads measured in terminal of watershed were $9.6{\sim}757.9$ kg/day for BOD, $51.2{\sim}1418.5$ kg/day for T-N and $0.3{\sim}44.7$ kg/day for T-P. The pollutant loads of BOD, T-N and T-P in rainy season increased several times as compared to dry season. In rainy season, watershed with more than 30% in the proportion of paddy field to land showed relatively low discharge and pollutant loads in comparison to watershed with less than 30%. The discharge of watershed in rainy season increased 5.7times compared with the dry season in watershed with less than 30% in the proportion of paddy field to land, whereas was only 2.3times in watershed with more than 30%. The correlation coefficient($R^2$) of regression between discharge and pollutant loads of T-N were higher than those of BOD and T-P.

  • The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutritional parameters of young bulls supplemented with different ratios of protein: carbohydrate on tropical pastures from 4 until 18 months old. Fifty-five non-castrated beef calves ($138.3{\pm}3.4kg$, 90 to 150 d of age) were used. The calves (young bulls) were subjected to a 430-d experimental period encompassing 4 seasons. The treatments were as follows: control, only mineral mixture; HPHC, high protein and high carbohydrate supplement; HPLC, high protein and low carbohydrate supplement; LPHC, low protein and high carbohydrate supplement; and LPLC, low protein and low carbohydrate supplement. The amount of supplement was adjusted every 28 d. Dry matter (DM) intake was higher in the dry-to-rainy transition and rainy seasons for all nutritional plans. Non-supplemented animals had lower intakes of DM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) than supplemented young bulls in all seasons. Although differences in DM intake were not observed between supplemented animals, the supplements with high carbohydrate (HPHC and LPHC) had lower forage intake during suckling (rainy-to-dry transition season) and in the rainy season. However, the HPHC treatment animals had higher intake and digestibility of neutral detergent fiber. It can be concluded that supplementation with high protein levels (supplying 50% of the crude protein requirement) provide the best nutritional parameters for grazing young bulls in most seasons, increasing intake and digestibility of diet, and these effects are more intense when associated with high carbohydrate levels level (supplying 30% TDN requirement).

  • This study was carried out to investigate sedimentary environment changes in Nakdong River sediments. For this purpose, sediments at six sites upstream of Gangjeong-Goryung Weir in the middle of the Nakdong River were collected before and after the rainy season. Particles size, IL, TOC, TN, TP, and SRP were analyzed for the sediment environment. The changes in the watershed environment before and after the rainy season (precipitation, discharge, and SS concentration) were investigated. After the rainy season, the amount of precipitation and discharge increased more than three times, and the average concentration of SS in the stream increased more than two times. Fine grained sediment and the concentrations of IL, TOC, TN, TP, SRP were increased after the rainy season. As a result of sediment contamination assessment, IL was 19~68% of the reference value, TN and TP were 21~76% and 21~58% of the reference value. The result showed strong correlation between particle size (Silt+Clay) and organic contents of sediment (IL, TOC, TN, TP and SRP). It is considered that the change of the river watershed environment (precipitation, discharge) is an important factor of the change of sedimentation environment.

  • In order to characterize the microbial distribution at sediments of Lake Daechung, soil samples were collected at two depths of 0.5~2 cm and 19~21 cm of Chudong(static) and Hoenam(streaming) site on May 18th(before rainy season) and on August 24th in 1998(after rainy season), and then the density(CFU/g soil) of microorganisms including bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi was investigated by the viable cell counting method. Microbial density at streaming site was on the whole 3.9-fold higher than that at static site. Bacterial densities examined before and after rainy season was revealed to be similar, whereas actinomycetes and fungi exhibited higher distribution after and before rainy season, respectively. The microbial distribution was not generally reduced with the increase of depth and was rather higher at some deep sites. On comparing with the microbial densities of grass land around the lake, bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi at lake sediments on the average showed the distribution of 52.9%, 35%, and 7%, respectively. However, their distribution except for fungi which exhibited 71.2% was mostly found to be somewhat higher than at the shore of lake.

  • Characteristics in distributions of T, S, nutrients, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations and meso-zooplankton abundances and the relations among these parameters were investigated with the data collected in Asan Bay around the rainy season from May 24 till August 25, 2006 at about 10 days interval. Freshwater input during the rainy season clearly affected the distributions of zooplankton and phytoplankton (chlorophyll ${\alpha}$). Freshwater discharge resulted in high nutrients decreased zooplankton abundances. On the contrary, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations increased at the end of the rainy season. It seemed that the increase of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations was the result of the decreased zooplankton and enriched nutrients caused by freshwater discharges. Seawater temperatures were certainly the reason for the zooplankton succession. However, overall abundance of zooplankton and abundances of some zooplankton such as Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia pacifica, and Sagitta crassa seemed to be influenced by lowered salinity caused by heavy rain rather than seawater temperatures.
