Aiming at widely used high-pier bridges in Sichuan-Tibet Railway, this paper presents an investigation to design and evaluate the seismic vibration reduction effects of several measures, including viscous damper (VD), friction pendulum bearing (FPB), and tuned mass damper (TMD). Primarily, according to the detailed introduction of the concerned bridge structure, dynamic models of high-pier bridges with different seismic vibration reduction (SVR) measures are established. Further, the designs for these SVR measures are performed, and the optimal parameters of these measures are investigated. On this basis, the vibration reduction effects of these measures are analyzed and assessed subject to actual earthquake excitations in Wenchuan Earthquake (M=8.0), and the most appropriate SVR measure for high-pier bridges in Sichuan-Tibet Railway is determined at the end of the work. Results show that the height of pier does not obviously affect the performances of the concerned SVR measures. Comprehensively considering the vibration absorption performance, installation and maintenance of all the employed measures in this paper, TMD is the best one to absorb vibrations induced by earthquakes.
Precast assembled bridge piers with hybrid connection (PASP) use both tendons and socket connections. To study the seismic performance of PASP, a full-scale in-situ test was performed based on an actual bridge project. The elastic-plastic fiber model of PASP was established using finite element software, and numerical analyses were performed to study the influence of prestress degree and socket depth on the PASP seismic performance. The results show that the typical failure mode of PASP under horizontal load is bending failure dominated by concrete cracking at the joint between the column and cushion cap. The cracking of the pier concrete and opening of joints depend on the prestress degree and socket depth. The prestressing tendons and socket connection can provide enough ductility, strength, restoration capability, and bending strength under small horizontal displacements. Although the bearing capacity and post yield stiffness of the pier can be improved to some extent by increasing the prestressing force, ductility is reduced, and residual deformation is increased. Overall, there are reasonable minimum socket depths to ensure the reliability of the socket connection.
A comprehensive review for the selection of urban rail vehicle systems that best suit Gimpo railway line is taking place with consideration of the project area characteristics in light of line planning, passenger demand, supply of rolling stock, and railway construction and operation. Various aspects of vehicle systems including passenger demand on concerned lines, regional characteristics, vehicle types, and railway construction and operational settings should be taken into consideration. In addition, request for the introduction of customized vehicle systems reflecting the convenience of transit users such as wide and hospitable inner space, low noise, flexible operation of 2 to 4 car train-set and eye catching slim bridge piers is increasing. A study on alternatives to place an order to opt for optimum rolling stock systems considering line characteristics of Gimpo City's urban railway and future passenger demand while meeting the needs of Gimpo City has been conducted.
The function of diaphragms at abutments and piers of prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder train bridge is to transfer forces from the superstructure onto bearings or column and to stiffen the superstructure cross-section against in-plane deformation. Due to large stress disturbance at diaphragm, the design for the diaphragm using conventional design method is relatively irrational than designs for other structual members. And, due to contribution to boundary condition of deck slab by the diaphragm, the behavior of deck slab near the diaphragm is different from behavior of the deck slab obtained from two dimensional analysis of the bridge, which is basis far the design of deck slab. In this paper, three dimensional behavior of deck slab near diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge constructed by the precast span method are analyzed by using three dimensional finite element modeling. Then, strut-and-tie model is applied to design the diaphragm of PSC box girder train bridge. The modeling techniques in this paper can be applied effectively to examine the causes of cracks at deck slab near diaphragm and to design diaphragm rationally.

During the core drilling for the design of a railway bridge crossing over the inferred fault system along the river, fracture zone, extends vertically more than the bottom of borehole, filled with fault gouge was found. The safety of bridge could be threatened by the excessive subsidence or the reduced bearing capacity of bedrock, if a fault would be developed under or around the pier foundation. Thus, a close examination of the fault was required to rearrange pier locations away from the fault or to select a reinforcement method if necessary. Geophysical methods, seismic reflection method and electrical resistivity survey over the water covered area, were applied to delineate the weak zone associated with the fault system. The results of geophysical survey clearly showed a number of faults extending vertically more than 50m. Reinforcement was not desirable because of the high cost and the water contamination, etc. The pier locations were thus rearranged based on the results of geophysical surveys to avoid the undesirable situations, and additional core drillings on the rearranged pier locations were carried out. The bedrock conditions at the additional drilling sites turned out to be acceptable for the construction of piers.
Relative displacements between decks should be within the allowable limit under horizontal forces in high-speed railway bridges. Longitudinal force transmitters(LFT) have been introduced ih high-speed railway bridges for test track. The horizontal forces on the pier supporting the fixed bearing are transmitted to the near piers supporting the sliding bearings by LFT, The performance of LFT was investigated by field test in which the braking and acceleration tests using KTX were conducted in Baebang viaduct. The relative displacements between decks were measured infield test and were compared with the numerical results and the allowable limit.
This study utilizes large-scale shake table test to investigate the seismic performance of an isolated bridge with lead rubber bearings crossing an active fault. Two transverse restraining systems with and without shear keys are tested by applying spatially varying ground motions. It is shown that the near-fault span exhibits larger bearing displacement than the crossing-fault span. Bridge piers away from the fault rupture are more vulnerable than those adjacent to the fault rupture by attracting more seismic demand. It is also verified that the shear keys are effective in restraining the bearing displacement on the near-fault span, particularly under the large permanent ground displacement.

Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments and piers bring about severe problems in track geometry and require maintenance work. In case of concrete slab track, more severe deformation and additional forces on rail and rail supports can be induced by bridge deck deformation, which affect the serviceability of track structure since concrete slab track is much stiffer than ballasted track and the behavior of track structure is integrated with that of bridge deck. In this study, the design variables affecting the serviceability of track structure are selected and the influence level is estimated by a parametric study. As a result, it is found that continuous span is advantageous than simply supported span and the stiffness of bridge bearing and rail fastener as well as the distance between last rail support and bridge bearing are most important parameters.
This paper, as a study for the serviceability design of railway bridges with concrete track, presents the effects of design parameters of tracks and bridges on the forces acting on the rail supports of the track. To calculate the forces acting on the track, an unequal spacing discrete supported model with different spacing of rail supports was induced. Design parameters are the rail support spacing of expansion joints above abutments or piers of bridges, the distance from the support of a girder to the last rail support on the end of the girder, and the number of additional rail supports. The causes of the displacement of track are axial force, unit vertical displacement, and unit rotation. From the analysis, the maximum compressive force and the maximum uplifting force acting on the rail supports were determined and the effects of the rail support spacing on the forces acting on the track were presented.

The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete piers subjected to quasi-static cyclic loads, which have been used in large numbers for railway and urban transportation facilities. Important test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, loading type, and the behaviors f members have been evaluated through limit states of crack occurrence, yielding and ultimate state of member, ductility and load-deflection loop can be secured by considering the influence of hoop reinforcement ratio and axial load, and that plastic hinge length and ductility ar determined by the combination of the quantities of hoop reinforcement and axial load.
