  • The equivalent circuit for the RLH-TL is proposed considering radiation effects due to the inclusion of a series capacitor and shunt inductor in a unit cell for the right/left-handed transmission line(RLH-TL). The design equations to realize a specific phase shift at a given frequency is also provided. The S-parameters for unit cells with N=1, 3, 5, and 10 are analyzed in various aspects based on the EM and circuit simulations especially for the purpose of controlling radiation along RLH-TL's. A modification formula for the radiation rate per unit cell is also proposed for good agreement between the EM and circuit simulation results.

  • An integrated command system is critical for the safety of firefighters and effective work in the headquarters of a special disaster areas such as natural disaster or large man-made hazard. The integrated command system requires environmental information such as temperature, humidity, and $CO_2$ levels, as well as personal physical information such as pulse and air respirator levels. An Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) chip converts sensed information into digital signals, and a Micro Controller Unit (MCU) transmits the digital signals to a transmission board using serial communication through a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). The digital signals are saved in a transmission board and transmitted to the integrated command system by a Radio Frequency (RF) unit. The location of fire-fighters in a building are determined using a gyro sensor and an inertial sensor. The collected information is applied to the integrated command system for firefighter safety and to ensure that they can effectively carry out their duties. Tthis study theoretically and experimentally investigated the technologies of RF transmission, indoor position, and an integrated command system that supports decision making using the transmitted information.

  • It it essential to get the exact location information of products for a warehouse management. It is very hard, however, to know the location of products which change their location in warehouse frequently This causes the effective warehouse management to be almost impossible. In this paper, we suggest a new location management system for such a SKU(Stock Keeping Unit) with high mobility. The system is composed of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), a management terminal with wireless LAN, mobile devices (Cellular Phone & PDA), and a central management system. As a model of a SKU with high mobility, we selected a used-car stored in a large-scale warehouse. We designed and implanted used-car location management system. After analyzing the operations of each position in used-car warehouse where the system will run, we implemented each function. This research shows that an embedded system with wireless LAN is able to know the status of coming in and cut and location of a SKU with high mobility in warehouse very accurately in real time. Therefore, it makes the warehouse to be controlled systematically.

  • In this paper, a Ku-band 50-W internally-matched power amplifier is designed and fabricated using a CGHV1J070D GaN HEMT from Wolfspeed. To obtain the same magnitudes and phases for the output signals of the unit transistor cells, which constitute a power transistor, a slit pattern and an asymmetric T-junction are used in the input and output matching circuits. The internally-matched power amplifier is fabricated on two different thin-film substrates with relative dielectric constants of 40 and 9.8, respectively, and is measured under pulsed conditions with a pulse period of $330{\mu}s$ and a duty cycle of 6%. The measured results show a maximum output power of 50~73 W, a drain efficiency of 35.4~46.4%, and a power gain of 4.5~6.5 dB from 16.2 to 16.8 GHz.

  • A spectral line survey is performed from 159.7 to 164.7 GHz toward Orion-KL, as an extension of our previous line survey from 138.3 to 150.7 GHz with the same 14 m radio telescope of Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. Typical system temperatures were 260 - 1000 K to achieve a sensitivity of about 0.02 - 0.04 K in TA unit. A total of 63 line spectra are detected in this survey. Among them, 54 lines lines are found to be the first detections towards an astronomical source and only 9 spectral lines have been previously identified from other observations. Forty-eight of 54 lines are believed to be from the known transitions of the known molecules, while 6 lines are 'unidentified'. All detected lines are found to be from a total of 10 molecular species and their isotopic variants. The molecular species with most numerous detected transitions are $HCOOCH_3$ (22), followed by $CH_3OCH_3$ (7), $C_2H_5CN$ (7), and $SO_2$ (6). The LTE rotation diagram analysis using all homogeneous data with those from previous survey gives more reliable determination of physical quantities. The derived values of the rotation temperatures and column densities for $HCOOCH_3$, $CH_3OCH_3$, and $SO_2$ are are 75 $\~$ 197 K and $1.5 {\~}18 {\times} 10^{15}\;cm^{-2}$, respectively.

  • Recently, new devices have been developed for the Internet of Things concept. The devices commonly use RF (Radio Frequency) based wireless communication. With the increase in the number of devices, the space allocated for the radio frequency band in wireless communication fills rapidly. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is an alternative, secure and economical communication technology that uses light instead of radio frequencies. While Web of Things (WoT) is the adaptation of the experience and knowledge acquired from the web into the internet of things ecosystems. By combining these two technologies, the development of the Visible Light Communication for Web of Things (VLC4WoT) system, which can use VLC and WoT technologies, has been our motivation. In our study, microcontroller control circuit was created for VLC4WoT system. Control of the circuits over the internet was performed. VLC based receiver and transmitter units have been developed for wireless communication. Web based interface was created for control. The test apparatus consisting of four objects with four outputs and a transfer unit was carried out. In this test, communication was achieved successfully. It was presented in the study that VLC can be used in the web of things architecture. In the future, it is envisaged to use this system as a safe and economical system in indoor environments.

  • A radio telemetry system was fabricated to continuously measure the deep body temperature (DBT) of broilers as an effort to monitor the occurrences of possible poultry diseases. It was shown that the DBT of broilers could be measured with an accuracy of ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. Daily fluctuation of DBT in case of a 40 days old broiler was evaluated. To develop a system which can control the environment of poultry housing in real time based on DBT measurements, we proposed the design criteria of a dedicated receiver unit.

  • We report the design and basic operating characteristics of an radio frequency excited waveguide $CO_2$ laser. Four picecs of waveguide channels are placed in one laser cavity to increase a power per unit length with the form of a 2 ${\times}$ 2 matrix. Four independent optical outputs are measured from the front of output coupler, and these beams are combined to a Gaussian mode beam far from the output coupler. A 12 W output power has been obtained with $CO_2$ : $N_2$ : He : Xe = 1 : 1 : 3 : 0.2 of the gas mixture and 200 W of radio frequency.

  • In recent years in the field of robotics, various methods have been developed to create an intimate relationship between people and robots. These methods include speech, vision, and biometrics recognition as well as gesture-based interaction. These recognition technologies are used in various wearable devices, smartphones and other electric devices for convenience. Among these technologies, gesture recognition is the most commonly used and appropriate technology for wearable devices. Gesture recognition can be classified as contact or noncontact gesture recognition. This paper proposes contact gesture recognition with IMU and EMG sensors by using the hidden Markov model (HMM) twice. Several simple behaviors make main gestures through the one-stage HMM. It is equal to the Hidden Markov model process, which is well known for pattern recognition. Additionally, the sequence of the main gestures, which comes from the one-stage HMM, creates some higher-order gestures through the two-stage HMM. In this way, more natural and intelligent gestures can be implemented through simple gestures. This advanced process can play a larger role in gesture recognition-based UX for many wearable and smart devices.
